Handicapped plates on a motorcycle?

I saw a guy ridding a HD big twin with HC plates. This guy was huge, made it look like a Honda Rebel. Prob 6 1/2' or better 300lbs. Now, I ride, and I have health problems, so I can't say anything without knowing his story.... but what kind of health problems can you have that stop you from walking a few parking spaces but allow you to safely handle a 600+lb mc???

I know that once moving on flat pavement, a mc is easier to ride than a bicycle... but the real world isn't that simple or easy.

And is the HC plate necessary? In 25 years of riding in a dozen different states I have only seen one place where you weren't allowed to park closer than the cars anyway.

Reverend Greg 04-25-2010 01:02 PM

You in D-town,man...everything about that place is a about crooked contacts...He paid for those plates(G)

kotomile 04-25-2010 01:03 PM

It's probably just automatic. Once you're handicapped, you just get the plate so why try to get a regular one if you're entitled to a HC one?

As for the HC plate, HC status can be due to different things. I have an Army friend who's on the verge of being medically retired (OIF wasn't kind to him, to say the least) and if his foot gets any worse he'll qualify for a HC tag, but I don't see him giving up his Harley...

This was in the burbs! No one in Detroit has the money for a Harley, they spent all their money on Escalades and $2,000 houses!!!!

For the record, I am not in Detroit proper, its just the closest known location so that people roughly where I am in case I am selling something.

Turbo_4 04-25-2010 04:40 PM

That's like whenever I see a 2009 Mustang Gt 500 with handicap plates...I mean come on...so handicap but you can still drive a car like that? Or even better is something like a Ford F350 King Ranch power stroke diesel, lifted, with stacks and a 12" exhaust with a handicap plate...makes no sense.

Or if you are around Ft.Hood, everyone has a DV plate...not sure what the significance is, it's not like it gets you closer to Walmart.

Pen2_the_penguin 04-25-2010 04:53 PM

where I live, there is a bitch that drives a new 2010 Camaro SS with HC plates, and she totes in about 6 bags of shit at a time while wearing high heels... WTF?

DV as in Disabled Veteran? If so and that's your attitude towards them, go fuck yourself and move to France prick. If not, I apologize.

And does she always park it in the oversized spots that are supposed to be for vans with ramps?

WTF is the deal with that? If someone can get a ticket for parking in a HC spot.... why shouldn't a a guy with HC plates on his Focus get a ticket for parking in a van spot just because he wants more space around his new paint?

My cousin has always been in a wheel chair. My uncle parks his van w/ramp (for her) in the back of the parking lot as long as it isn't raining. He says that it doesn't hurt her to push her the extra distance.

Agreed... if you mean:

Who can get Disabled Veteran (DV) License Plates
A veteran who, as a result of an injury or disease that occurred while on active service with the U.S. Armed Forces, qualifies if any of the following apply:

•Has a disability rated at 100 percent by the U.S. Veterans Affairs or the military service that discharged the veteran due to a diagnosed disease or disorder that substantially impairs or interferes with mobility.
•Is so severely disabled as to be unable to move without the aid of an assistant device.
•Has lost, or lost the use of, one or more limbs.
•Is permanently blind, as defined in §19153 of the Welfare Institution Code.
Then you can go fuck yourself.. if you are talking about some other thing then I also apologize.

rmcelwee 04-25-2010 06:27 PM

At work we had a lady in the office who had HC plates. She parked up front but at lunch she would walk a mile or two with the other ladies in the office for exercise. Who walks for 30 minutes but can't be bothered to park 20 yards away. I always wanted to confront her about this but she retired before I got a chance.

FWIW, I park WAY OUT in the parking lot at work so the dumb asses won't shit up my car. I've actually timed it and it takes an extra 30 seconds to walk from there. Who doesn't have one extra minute a day? Makes me wonder who is parking their Lexus, Porsche, etc in the tight spaces at work just asking to get their doors dinged up.

NastyNate 04-25-2010 08:50 PM

If I could get awwway with HC plates.... well anyway. I had DV plates on my oldd bike and that got a lot of looks and questions.

WonTon 04-25-2010 08:57 PM

FWIW.......my dad is a handicap (he has had like 6 lower back surgeries) and he has handicap plates on his HD road-king. he had to talk to his doctor about his abilities to ride a bike, and since him getting on the bike and keeping it up right doesnt require the use of his lower back he can ride his bike.

Me too. I park as far as possible. The sheet metal on the Miata is thin.

I sawa guy in a brand new STI jam in between to suv's. Right after he went in a little kid ran out and jumped on his hood and then swung the door into it. The dad just laughed at him. Who cares about cars so much that they want to get an STI... but not enough that they don't care about the paint/bodywork?

My cousin's husband's dad is a paralyzed Vietnam veteran, and he restores foxbodies/vintage cars now. I am simply amazed at what he has done, without the use of 2 legs. His latest project is a Studebaker with an LS2. I'm not sure if he has dv or hc or normal plates or what..

Born and raised in Livonia here...

PTSD gets you a DV plate. When I see some guy with a brand new Bmw 330xi hop on out of their car and scoot on into wally world... I mean come on.

Qckslvr 04-27-2010 01:05 PM

There is a local guy that rides an old pan head around. It has a side car on it, but no handicapped plates. He only has one leg, and refuses to be labeled.

whoa, please say since I have not been in this thread for a while, that we are not talking about a DV, I didnt read everything, but I agree with the "fuck off" if its a DV, there is a fucking reason they have it and I damn well feel that they deserve parking of their own. Its ignorance like that is what makes me pissed off.

Must not live in a military installation. Everyone and their mom has DV plates. I counted at the last stop light I was at. It was a three lane road...I counted 6 DV plates...just at that light. The next light had 4. They are everywhere. All you need for a DV plate is have had a few medical conditions. Every fuck around here has them.

My friend got them for having PTSD when he served 2.5 weeks in Afgan...not even in a red zone...sorry...

Yeah, what could possibly happen in 2.5 weeks in Afghanistan? And what's this about "every fuck"?

Let me know next time someone hands you a marker and advises you to write your blood type on your boots..

NastyNate 04-27-2010 06:35 PM

I dirve the Miata with DV plates. AND I hope out of it when I'm getting out. So what? Just because you have DV or HC plates doesn't mean that you're in a wheel chair or have to drive some Ford Econovan.
I used to have a riced out Eclipse with DV plates when I was still in college. There you could park in HC spots as there were no shortage of them. Ahhhhhh the looks my wife and I would get. Just because someone doesn't looked disabled doesn't mean they aren't.

Or even their own blood on their deceased forehead... I dont think an aerial transporter should ever have to do that, but when unloading casualties at the base, sometimes they come DOA. Thank god it wasnt me that had to do that, but my spotter, and he couldnt sleep for 2 weeks... because he was fresh from basic... hoping his ride into the air force was a smooth one.

Lackland, AFB Texas...

I know how it is, since I spent basic and tech school there... not much different.

edit: Chicksdigmiatas can testify... the poor bastard is stationed there still...

PPL That are handicapped soely because of obesity should be required to have obesity plates. Obesity plated cars should be required to park in specially marked obesity spaces at the extreme back of the parking lot.

Turbo_4 - ppl like you are the reason Vietnam veterans received the "welcome home" that they did.

Lol, sounds like someone is a little butt hurt. Excuse me for not looking up to all the bright and shiny infantry people stationed here. These aren't a bunch of highschool drop outs, people whose last choice was to either be military or jail, or people that were either going to keep living in Grandma's trailer or get out.

I mean come the fuck on. This isn't an airforce base or special operations or really anything that requires a thought process. This is training for people who can operate solely on someone telling them what to do...no thinking involved. Don't even get me started about these morons out here. The infantry division isn't some amazing, glorified, position. It's where you can when you can't get into anything else.

This, + Ft. Hood may have a lot of infantry but some of the smartest people in the military are there. Besides that, fuck yourself, regardless of what there job is or why they have it, they're doing something they want to do DEFENDING YOUR ASS, and the country you love, so STFU go eat a bullet, or move to France. I'd advise leaving this thread with your anti-military crap before someone local to you takes too much offense to it.

It's right beside "stereotype fag in a miata, OK." Clearly everyone stationed at Ft. Hood is an inbred toothless infantry hick with an IQ of 11. I dunno how turbo_4 hasn't been turned yet.

miatauser884 04-28-2010 11:24 AM

I'm going to throw in my :2cents:

Growing up in Jacksonville, NC (Camp Lejeune), as the son of a Marine gives me a unique perspective. My parents divorced so I have seen the inside, and the solely civilian side of the military environment.

Camp Lejuene is where the new recruits fresh out of basic are sent for further training. Invincible and ready to take on the world!

Wow, was that really a fair statement? Not at all. Most people only see the few assholes out in town that want to start fights, cause trouble, or sleep with your GF. This is a very small % of the military population. Please do not cast judgement over the entire military population because your experience with a small percentage was shitty.

Despite what you think, these are the individuals that make it so you don't have to worry about a plane flying through your workplace, or a bomb going off at the mall. Problems in the rest of the world will have an impact here, if they are not kept under control.

Instead of calling the guy with a DV plate on his motor cycle or sports car a douchebag fag. Why not buy him a beer and ask him what happened? You might find that their are few less assholes around.

If you've never been here then opening your mouth is pointless. Yeah, it is the largest military installation in the world. It also has one of the highest crime rates per capita.

This town is built on titty bars, clubs, car lots, and more strip joints. That really sounds like they are catering to the intellect that the Ft.Hood houses. I mean come on.

And also, I'm not making fun of a person with a DV plate. I'm saying there is no point to it. PTSD gets you a DV plate. My friends Dad broke his left leg at one point in time and broke a collar bone at one point in time and was eligible for a DV plate.

My friend who went to Afgan for a little under 3 weeks and had a crazy panic attack can get a DV plate.

I have tons of military friends who I've bought beers or said "thanks" but every single of one of them has gone to the middle east, gotten fucked up, and now come home to shit jobs. There isn't a lot after the army...you are kind of stuck with "...now what."

After being stationed in good ol J-action-ville I can honestly say you have an amazingly positive outlook on that town. That's really surprising to see but very nice.

Turbo 4 my biggest benefit out of having DV plates is that I pay $3 every year to renew my registration instead of the usual amount. Yeah it doesn't get me better parking, although maybe it should, but that's not the point. I voluntarily signed that dotted line but that doesn't mean I have to not accept the benefits I have earned, DV plates being the smallest.
