Hard to keep your head up at this point...

My last 3 months =

Losing my rescue dog, my house, getting divorced and now getting laid off today.

Damn.

phildent 07-09-2015 03:54 PM

Bad luck buddy.I had a similar experience a few years ago except I kept the dog.
There's plenty more rescue dogs badly need your help and I have now a much better job,a far better house and a wife that is a million times better than the old one.
You will do the same, there will be a day you laugh at this.
Regards;)

Sorry to hear man,

What type of work did you do?

I'm a Technical Writer, 8 years of experience to go along with a Journalism degree. Was a Claim Rep for State Farm for 2 years before that.

Big kicker is no management experience, I did all the work on a big project to change our publishing system (and be able to use it as a basic content management system), but I only "managed" myself.

Thanks man, shit not sure? I was going to try to save up to move next year where there are more opportunities for what I do, basically nothing here for it.

So I'm going to start firing off resumes tomorrow and will basically be open to move about anywhere in the country if need be.

Do we have any Recruiter/HR types on the board? Maybe someone could help get my resume really polished up?

TheBandit 07-09-2015 08:57 PM

I know a few recruiters here locally. They are mostly industrial based, but they might be able to help.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate circumstances. Keep your head up, it's got to get better from here.

I'm pretty good with resumes. I won't write it, but I'll proof read it and offer advice if you like.

Bandit, which recruiters do you know? I'd obviously be happy to speak with them/send my resume.

I wouldn't mind a career change, I'm just unsure of what I could with my relatively narrow skill set that's not also going to end up in a horrific pay cut.

I mean I could probably easily go grab some $35k/yr job, but I haven't made that little since I graduated college 10 years ago. And stupid me got into a lifestyle with the ex that can't really be maintained on my income alone.

Erat 07-10-2015 11:36 AM

Technical writer for the automotive industry?
That's what my dad does, works for Bosch, contract work for Ford at the moment.

Jobs are out there man, we can't find good help around here.

And find another pet, there are hundreds and thousands of them out there at any time in shelters or stores that need good homes.

well at least you're poor and ugly.

concealer404 07-10-2015 11:54 AM

I hear Monk has some kittens he needs to find homes for.

DNMakinson 07-10-2015 12:39 PM

What Six said.

What type of products do you have experience in writing about? Where are you presently located?

z31maniac 07-10-2015 12:52 PM

I'm in Tulsa.

Previous experience as a Tech Writer:

MerCruiser: Editor/Style guide director, for engines, outboards, hydraulics, etc.
L3: Power distribution systems on Naval ships
TWG: Manuals for crane Rated Capacity indicator systems (and the GUI and related), hoists/winches for the oil industry, know how to comply with the ANSI B30.5 standards etc.

Unfortunately my skill set is very narrow and specialized.

Not automotive, but marine is pretty close. I'm willing to move anywhere to keep my career going.

I'll get another Pit eventually, they are great dogs, but I need to get stable again before I can do that.

Truth. Also, the orthopedics companies around here pay big money to just about everyone, and I'm sure there are jobs open for someone with your skill set.
Google Zimmer, DePuy, or Biomet.
We need more car people!

I've tried to get him to consider Indy before, it didn't go well. :giggle:

Monk 07-10-2015 02:30 PM

Indy > Every city in Oklahoma > anywhere in Nebraska.

concealer404 07-10-2015 02:38 PM

I'd almost agree. His city is kinda cool, though. Was a nice place to get mexican food and a big margarita for breakfast before finishing the home route in a really loud turbo Miata. :giggle:

You guys would get along fabulously, too.

dieselmiata 07-10-2015 03:07 PM

This may be out of left field a bit, but have you considered taking some time to travel? It can really help in getting some new perspective on life in general. It sounds like you don't have any ties holding you back, so you could pretty much go anywhere.

sixshooter 07-10-2015 03:27 PM

These guys have a big office and factory for some of their product lines in OKC and need help writing everything. Their repair and procedure manuals suck ass.

Home - Terex Construction
9528 W I 40 Service Rd, Oklahoma City, OK 73128
(405) 787-6020

Let me know if you want a contact.

Would love to, don't have the cash for it.

House problems last year + divorce this year took care of nearly all the savings account.

Is the plant in OKC doing OK? I know the one in IOWA is SLLLOOOOWW. The company I just worked for did a lot of business with them and in IA they are doing big massive furloughs.

However, I would love a contact there!

I assume that was the Cedar Rapids company they acquired that builds asphalt paver machines. Terex pretty much drove it into the ground.

CMI is the outfit in OKC that Terex bought. They sold part of it off to Bomag recently but retained most of it. Terex is just a company that buys up other companies.

Touche!

There's cheap houses for rent in my neighborhood, too. And Monk is only 1:45 north of me.

Monk 07-11-2015 11:40 AM

I also have a guest bedroom. I should mention that it is also in the basement of my creepy manor.

concealer404 07-11-2015 12:01 PM

That sounds way cooler than mine. And you have more kitties. And it has that added sense of adventure, might come with rape!

Ahh, got it. But if you have a contact there I'd love to talk to them. I'm exploring any and all possibilities.

You've already got me at half mast.

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you guys who offered up help. It means a lot, I know we are only internet "bros" but still, I've received a ton of help.

I have an opportunity here in town, but I'm looking outside, mainly looking at Denver and Dallas (most jobs), would prefer Nashville/Portland/Seattle, but beggars can't be choosers.

Again, thanks to those of you who reached out, it really means a lot, especially given my last few months.

I really, REALLY appreciate it.

Have a good weekend gents.

PS If you run across anything let me know :)
