I don't usually like the looks of the NC, but this one I would die for.
Attachment 213503

HDR doesn't seem to reap any additional benefits in parking lots at night...

I got into a staring contest with this car and lost. :(
Attachment 213506

Taken with a Powershot S2 IS, automatic exposure bracketing at -2, 0, +2... Only three exposures each.

y8s 04-12-2008 09:31 AM

so is noise from the longest exposure a normal side-effect of HDR? I notice it in a few images.

Pretty cool otherwise. the sky looks phenomenal.

hackerchris 04-12-2008 09:45 AM

The STI looks very angry. It's eyebrows, flared nostril, and bleak mouth say it all.

m2cupcar 04-12-2008 10:20 AM

The noise is most likely a result of short exposure length and then extreme levels adjustment to compensate. And then there's a point at which you're just not going to get detail in the darker areas - you reach the limits of the equipment. You can remove the noise at the price of detail to some extent:
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...R1unnoised.jpg
I don't mind the noise in these shots.

Bryce 04-12-2008 10:40 AM

The noise was from me not checking what the ISO setting was. It could've been easily avoided but I forgot. :giggle:
Also, people actually use HDR to get rid of noise in the shadows, but that usually works better by taking 5 or more different exposures.

It seems for HDR to make the picture really stand out, you need to have a certain highlight in mind when you're processing the photos. I chose the sky and that's the reason I took the pictures.

Vashthestampede 04-12-2008 11:47 AM

I know nothing about the HDR stuff, I've seen it before, but I don't know whats involved or how to. But damn, fucking pictures can look crazy different. My favorite of that group is the NC with a glass like finish look to it. The red on the NA really comes out red hunh? After I post this I might google a how to and see whats involved in getting into this.

Keep these pics coming!

Today I'll be hanging out with some fellow turbo Miata peeps. Lets hope the sky will look nice and I'll remember to check the ISO setting.

cjernigan 04-12-2008 11:56 AM

This was a 5 exposure one using a Casio Exilim. Scott threw it together using photomatix.

The_Pipefather 04-12-2008 01:40 PM

Can someone enlighten me on how to take pictures like this? I have a 4 MP cybershot.

Braineack 04-12-2008 05:03 PM

so far this is my best. I still need lots of practice on taking pictures for one, and then composing them.

Bryce, too grainy, needs more post-processing

bryantaylor 04-12-2008 09:56 PM

someone explain what the hell HDR is to me please.

You take 3 (or 5) images at varying exposures, and then put them into a photo editor that supports HDR, like photomatix.

that looks fucking awesome.

Dark Wanderer 04-13-2008 06:04 PM

Yeah it's great! The white miata, I just look at it and I just can't believe it's a real one! It looks like a video game car!

Arkmage 04-13-2008 06:11 PM

hey Bryce, when do you think you'll get those pics up from the meet on saturday?

93inNM 04-13-2008 06:30 PM

Very, Very NICE photography.

I certainly like that beautiful sky, have the same here in New Mexico, ALWAYS AWESOME.

Loki047 04-13-2008 06:46 PM

Are there auto settings on some cameras? IE Set it to HDR mode and it will take the 3 or whatever exposures for ya.

SamS 04-13-2008 07:05 PM

Some cameras have a mode which takes 3-5 photos in rapid succession, but it doesn't change exposure setting in between shots. None have an HDR mode that I know of.

Most cameras will have a bracket feature that will take 3-5 shots at various exposures. When I do HDR, I only take 1 image and I adjust the exposure during post processing, then combine the images.

I prefer mild HDR, like this one
http://asianguywithacamera.com/msm_p...it01_small.jpg

Others prefer a more cartoonish look in their HDR, like this
http://asianguywithacamera.com/image.../images/11.jpg

The problem with HDR is that people are using it to 'fix' poor photography skills. Images that lack proper framing, lighting and vehicle position are being used for HDR. Post processing can't fix a bad image.

Braineack 04-14-2008 02:08 AM

here's another i played with:

tried the single image faked exposure method here:

I have a lot to learn on this Photomatix but I'll keep playing with it.

Edit - this one too:

Shoot that car in front of a nice location and it'll turn into a better shot. I like to use industrial back drops, which are generally pretty simple (less distractions)

y8s 04-14-2008 11:05 PM

Ran across this program today:
http://projects.ict.usc.edu/graphics/HDRShop/

there's also a tonemapping plugin that may be useful.

Normal setting on my camera phone:
http://www.y8s.com/hdr/003_zero.jpg

HDR Shop using -2, -1, 0, +1, +2 images.
http://www.y8s.com/hdr/hdrshop1.jpg

The difference isn't spectacular but you can see more detail in the buildings in the foreground. plus it is a CELL PHONE. :)

Might sound misinformed but isnt hdr used to contrast things with the sky?

Unless that's a JDM car (which it doesn't look to be based on the steering wheel being on the left) it's not an STI.

There were no "bugeyes" (02-03) STI sold in the US. We started getting STI's in "peanut eye" (04-05) and 'blob eye' (06-07).

sometimes.

the issue is that the world has infinite dynamic range and your vision automatically adjusts. so when you look at the sky, it doesn't blind you and when you look at the shadowy foreground, it isn't pitch black.

there are tons of other situations where bright objects are in scene with dark ones (night shots of lights, reflections, etc) and a limited dynamic range camera can't produce high contrast both in bright scenes AND dark scenes.
