I think I am ready to give up on AVG and switch to Malwarebytes. I've fixed two computers this week that I personally set up with AVG. Both had some sort of "you have a dangerous virus - click here to fix it" type virus and AVG didn't help either. The free Malwarebytes found and fixed both.

I have no idea why all virus software wouldn't be equal (at least in finding/identifying problems). I can understand where there would be differences in speed and accessories, but simple virus detection???

I switched to MS security essentials after AVG put out their bloated version that had questionable performance. I've had no problems with MS product. I previously used Avast too. My wife opens a lot of email attachments haphazardly and I tend to go to some questionable websites (on different computers) and I have yet to have to clean up either computer.

Did you go thru the registry and fix the hidden files on those infected computers? I've been hit twice (once at work and once at home) with that damn Windows Update virus, and have had to do it on both machines. Here at work they use CheckPoint and it has caught it again but I also used MB to kill it.

another vote for MS Security Essentials.

Found a virus on a laptop we use for work when one of the test labs plugged in a thumb drive with nothing but a video of the bullit chase scene on it (for testing purposes believe it or not)

I've had Malwarebytes save my *** once with that virus that constantly pops up so rapidly that you cannot operate any other windows because it is perpetually on top. My regular antivirus McAfee didn't catch it but Malwarebytes was able to spot it and remove it once I figured out a way to start it before the popup virus booted on restart. The popup virus was doing its thing while Malwarebytes was scanning in the background and eventually canned it.

My work computer is using Microsoft's antivirus and my home computer is using a Chinese one called Rising Antivirus. I'm sure the Chinese communists are stealing all of my credit card numbers with it. Both computers have nailed suspicious files in the past that were trying to get in.

I really like MB, and it seems to find more than AVG or Spybot, although truth be told I'll typically run all three of those in succession if I think there's something going on. AVG is really getting on my nerves of late though and I may just uninstall it. Really seems to eat a bunch of memory.

Mb is the only virus scanner I can get to work if I get one of those really annoying bugs like the Update one. I've gotten that twice, and only been able to kill it by starting in safe mode and running MB that way.

Edit: the virus sixshooter mentions is the Update one I've gotten. Annoying as ****.

I'd suggest grabbing these three tools and having them on a thumbdrive in case of this ******* virus rearing it's head again. I'm glad as **** I did.

Grab Malwarebytes, the "rkill.exe" and "unhide.exe".....so far they have saved my ***....3 times.

Looks like Ad-Aware is the best (I would have never guessed it).

They make some special notes about the MS software but say they had not updated it for the new stuff so they could not test it. The free software is toward the bottom of each chart (in its own section).

The only problem I've had with AVG is that it seems to think that HP downloads are trogans.
