Did some reading and I think I can get by perfectly fine with a galaxy s3 and just use Ting for that sweet 25 dollar a month bill.

I was a WebOS aficionado until HP screwed the pooch on that one, then jumped to Android. Got way into ROM flashing and kernels and blah blah on my OG Evo. Was flashing new roms all the time. finally got sick of telling people I missed their call or text because my latest kernel had a bug. Went around the block, searching for AOSP stable roms for the GS2, GS3, Evo LTE, etc.

Last year I bought a Nexus 4 and haven't rooted it. Haven't had the need! Stock Android is perfect.

If you want a smaller phone, go with the Moto X. If you want a larger phone, Nexus 4 used or Nexus 5.

As for the iPhone 5S 64GB... it's a nice phone and all, but I'm sorry, NO PHONE IS WORTH $400 WITH A CONTRACT. that's ballzing ridiculous. Absolutely insane. NO. A 32GB Nexus 5 is $400 WITHOUT a contract. Yes please. They're not any more difficult to use than the iPhone.

triple88a 12-29-2013 07:57 PM

Yeah wouldnt spend even 200 on the phone. Factory unlocked Iphones go for 800 some bucks.. and then people complain they have no money. Well no shit.

What are you using now?

I want a Nexus 5 but just really have no reason to buy one since my 4 still works perfectly. I would like a better camera but that's about the only complaint I have. Plus I think the 4 is prettier than the 5 anyway.

D2SPR refurb (GS3) and it's not working right, Samsung is fucking shit up for me. I'm rooted on the OEM ROM suffering through by using Nova Launcher. I fucking hate it. Software update requests every 30 minutes, S-Voice default request every other time I use Swiftkey, multiple Sprint-Zone updates daily, bloatware take-over.

turbofan 12-30-2013 01:48 PM

I know. Samsung blows.

Why not sell your GS3 and pick up a Nexus 5?

viperormiata 01-18-2014 11:39 AM

Decided to jump aboard the modern train. Picked up a super mint, pebble blue Galaxy S3 off Swappa for 180 dollars. Used Ting to activate it and port my current number over from at&t. The entire process took maybe 2 hours once the phone arrived in the mail.

I dropped mad skrilla on an Element Eclipse case (black/black) and a HD screen protector (black).

My current phone bill with Ting is 17 dollars, lol.

If you consider the amount of money required to obtain an "Element Eclipse case (black/black) and a HD screen protector" to constitute "mad skrillex" (wherein I understand "mad" to mean "a lot of" in this context), then you are either a damned fool, or you are as presumptuous as you are poor and Irish.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.....shit

I was charging my phone before bed and took it off to bring it across the room and I noticed it had shut off. I tried to restart it and it flashed SAMSUNG once and went black again. I took the battery out, cleaned the contacts with a cotton swab and replaced the battery. It vibrated immediately and flashed SAMSUNG again. Sometimes it will make it to the GALAXY SIII logo, then shut off, or sometimes it will actually make it all the way through the boot and let me check messages, play a song, etc..and then the Restart/Power Off/Airplane mode screen will pop up and then shut down. It will do this without me touching the screen.

I contacted the guy who sold me the phone and asked about the age of the battery. He said it's the same battery that was with the phone when he received it. The phone wasn't holding a great charge to begin with, so my guess is that (hopefully) it's a battery issue.

The phone has not been rooted and, as far as I am concerned, is completely stock. This is a shame as I really, really love the S3. Even though it's only been two days, haha.
I searched around and some threads relating to similar issues. The closest one seemed to something along the lines of the power button being stuck (I think). I'm honestly at a complete loss.

Any help will be greatly appreciative.
Just my luck. Think it's a battery issue?

Leafy 01-20-2014 10:05 AM

Will it run when plugged in and the battery out? I had a sidekick when I was in high school and the battery shit the bed so the phone worked great on the charger but would die as soon as you tried to make a call or access data when unplugged.

Is the battery bulged in the middle?

My first cell phone was a Nokia 5160. I got it my second or third year of college, I think. My older sister had a bag phone, though, back when she was in high school.

It's cheap to try to find out. You can buy cheap batteries on Amazon, et al for like $4 shipped. Buy one and see if it helps.

My bet: the phone had been water damaged. Biggest problem with used phones. If it's been dropped and broken, easy to tell. But nobody would be able to tell that my wife's phone had been in the toilet until after they activate it and find that it is slloooooowwwwwww

I would never buy a used phone without seeing the water damage indicator. Not that running the phone through the cloths drier doesnt make that go away...

viperormiata 01-20-2014 12:06 PM

I took it to a Sprint store since it's a Sprint phone. Battery tested fine. They said it's a software issue. I asked them to do a hard reset but they can't because it's not activated under them.

I sent an email to the guy off Swappa and I'm going to try and get my money back.

Yes. Also, note that it is possible to "reset" the charge indicator to read actual charge on a different battery, or one that doesn't hold a full charge. I had to do this with mine.

Search the web for instructions on how to do it on your particular phone. For me, I had to shut it down, charge it with the phone off (not in standby) for an hour, then turn it on and leave it plugged in for another hour.

I ordered a new battery immediately after mine started acting up last night. It will be here tomorrow. The Sprint tech said the battery is fine. It is holding a charge and when my phone actually boots, occasionally, I can see that it is draining at a normal rate.

This is what I have been trying to do. But, as you read in my previous post, the phone does not always boot fully. It has booted fully 3 times since this started. I've had it on the Recovery Boot and selected hard reset, but the phone cut itself off before it could start the process.

Thanks for the link. I'm still set on the S3 for a while (especially after ordering the case and spare battery). I'll try my luck with getting my money back from the seller off Swappa then go from there.

Edit: Almost forgot the most important part. My phone booted long enough for me to call the GF and tell her I wasn't ignoring her

Edit2: Email sent to Swappa to see what I/he/they can/should be doing.

Sorry, you replied as I was typing. It now sounds like it isn't the battery.

I think that phone got wet, and you got sold a lemon.

Very possible. The PO only had the phone a few weeks, so he is being completely apologetic about the entire thing AND Swappa is stepping in to make sure it all goes smoothly.

Edit: I see these phones "new" on ebay for around 270-300 dollars. Is there a catch with these or are they legit new? I don't mind dropping the coin for a new phone due to my monthly bill being practically nothing.

Edit2: Guy said he'd take it back and refund the money after he sees it. Swappa recommends I file a dispute with Paypal to invoke my buyer protection just in case he gets shifty with me. I'm sending it back as soon as I deactivate the phone with Ting.

viperormiata 01-22-2014 04:04 AM

Update: New battery arrived. Still cycling on/off, but I did manage to keep it on long enough for a "hard reboot" and wipe the phone clean. Still no bacon.

I need to order a new one, but still can't find anything on ordering a new phone off ebay. I'd like to get the exact same Sprint model. I'm digging the pebble blue. Amazon has them for 500+ dollars....yeah right.

rleete 01-22-2014 06:04 AM

See, I told you it wasn't the battery! :giggle:

turbofan 01-22-2014 12:49 PM

I know you like the phone. I understand that.

But I PROMISE you there are better phones for less money. Much better phones for considerably less money. It's one thing if you're buying a used phone; the GS3 was a good buy at $180 (if it had been fully functional). But at even $300+ you're paying more for less.

Just ask Hustler :giggle:

You can buy a 16GB Nexus 5 for $350. A Moto X for $400. A Moto G, brand new, for $200. Two of those phones are SIGNIFICANTLY better phones than the GS3, and the third is at least as good of a phone but much much cheaper.

viperormiata 01-22-2014 01:59 PM

Too late! Just bought another from a dude on Swappa for a tad more than the first. This guy has insane feedback and sent pics of everything I needed to see. Phone is retarded clean. Had a tracking number for me within an hour and even expedited it because I expressed how badly I needed another phone.

Ed, I completely understand. But after the case, battery and this fiasco, I'm sticking with it for now. I have no qualms about switching later if something is just not my taste. But for now I need something and this is the fastest way to get me back into reality. Remember this is my first jump into smartphone land, and the pool is mighty deep. I can only handle so much, haha.

New phone should be here either tomorrow or the day after at the latest. I called Ting and they said I needed the new phone in front of me before they deactivated the old one if I wanted to keep the same number. I hope to have the new phone activated and the old one gone by Friday morning.

I'm sure my recruiter has left me all sorts of fun messages in the past 3 days.

turbofan 01-22-2014 02:12 PM

haha... well I hope it works out.

The whole reason I'm recommending you get a new phone instead of a used one is because you're new to the game, not in spite of it. New phones come with warranties and newness. Used phones often come with problems because people are dbags.

I hope this one works out better! Hopefully you get it, like, NAO.

shooterschmidty 11-25-2014 10:14 AM

Doe anyone have any updates on how they're liking their Ting or other off-contract wireless service? My contract with Sprint is up and I'm evaluating my options including Ting and Straight Talk. My primary concern is lack of roaming data. I travel for work and and it's precisely when I'm not at and around home that I need service/data the most. That alone may lead me to Verizon, but I want I'm checking all of my options. Thanks.

y8s 11-25-2014 10:53 AM

if you're considering a move to Verizon, look at Page Plus--the MVNO that uses their network and costs less.

Better yet, get Ting and make work pay for a wireless hotspot on the VZW network.

turbofan 11-25-2014 12:16 PM

On Republic wireless I can roam with Verizon. Never had coverage issues. My dad is a truck driver and is also happy with the coverage.

shooterschmidty 11-25-2014 08:17 PM

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not sure that PagePlus yields enough of a savings compared to Verizon plan to be be worth the hassle, especially if I want to bring my own higher end phone. Republic Wireless is intriguing, even more so now that they're offering a 4G plan with up to 5 GB of data. I'm almost never near wi-fi unless I'm at home, but it doesn't seem like that's a deal breaker anymore. I'm not a fan of the previous generation phones, but it might be worth it.

For comparison purposes, if I go with Verizon I'll be splitting a "More Everything" plan with my brother, and I get a 15% discount from most of the major carriers. I'll have to look at the total cost of ownership over two years.

turbofan 11-25-2014 08:19 PM

Good idea. For Republic I'd wait a bit longer til they come out with the newer gen phones, or just pick up the Moto E or Moto G for cheapsies in the meantime. You'll be able to get most of the money back reselling those.

You don't ever need to use wifi, though they'd really like it if you do.

One drawback: No tethering, ever. Supposedly you can hack your phone to do it but I have not explored that.

Leafy 11-25-2014 08:35 PM

damn republic wireless is a damn good deal. Too bad you have to use their phones and you cant use a phone with a custom rom.

turbofan 11-25-2014 08:37 PM

^truth.

calteg 11-26-2014 09:06 AM

alright, I'm in a similar boat as rleete; had a flip phone for the last decade, I'm finally caving and looking into smartphones. From the research I've done, I want:
-at least 4G capable
-Ting compatible
-$200ish price point
-Large enough phone that I won't be finger fucking the screen while trying to type. The wife's iPhone4 drives me insane trying to txt on it

I spend 90% of my time at work or home, both have solid wifi. Phone suggestions welcome

rleete 11-26-2014 09:28 AM

Wife has a Samsung Galaxy Victory. We bought the phone, case and screen protector on eBay. Less then $90 for everything.

She loves it, but rarely uses data. Hooks up to wifi at the school (she teaches) and at home. Cost, because she texts and rarely calls is minimal.

BTW, I am still on Virgin, still using the old HTC Evo3D. Never bothered to upgrade. Maybe next year.

turbofan 11-26-2014 11:33 AM

Calteg, what do you want 4g for? I use 3g primarily ($25/mo unlimited call and text and up to 5GB 3G data). It's plenty fast for basic google searches and navigation and such. Web browsing is fine but a little slow. Music streaming is fine. Videos... Not so much.

Any of Republic's phones would work for you.

Disclaimer: I have zero to gain by you joining republic. As far as I know they don't even have the referral program going anymore.

calteg 11-26-2014 01:13 PM

A big part of my business involves making quick decisions while at auction. I won't use data for video or audio streaming, but when I do need to use it, I'll need data transfer almost immediately.

The wife's iphone 4 seems painfully slow to load web content. Don't know if shes on 3G or 4G.
