Help me choose a car...
Ok I need a car for 3-4k, $3500 would be ideal. My dads friend can get me cars at state auctions so a car the is 5k would be 3-4k at the auction.
Things I need in a car are: Fun to drive 4dr would be ideal but I could do 2dr as long as it as back seats Leather a plus Has to look like I'm not poor Cars that come to mind 2000 BMW 540i, 2001 vw passat, 2000 Saab 9-5. I'm a new real estate agent and I'm going to be selling houses from $300,000-$1,000,000 so I'm not in the poor area or the rich area, more like middle class so I don't need a Bently. Let me know what comes to mind |
Are you going to be driving clients around?
Get something that is practical and in really good condition, something common that won't kill you when you need to fix it. If you are going to have clients riding in it, get something large with easy access in and out of it. Get a Toyota Camry. Or better yet a domestic. The one and only real estate agent I dealt with had an older Jeep Grand Cherokee. |
Whatever you do...don't get an Xterra...they're a bitch to get in and out of the back of.
Get salesman to drive YOU around, with you and wife climbing in back to get an idea. Mercury Grand Marquis comes to mind...not bland like the Crown Vics, but uses the same cheap parts, affordable, comfortable, big and quiet. Consider road noise since you're going to want to make comments to set up each house you show, and will also want to hear what the buyers are whispering in the back. |
i got a 03 mazdaspeed protege as a daily for 4k
4dr-check peppy-check fun to drive- not to bad actually |
I'm in the process of looking at houses. Seems like about 80% of the realtors I see drive full-size Buicks, probably because they have easy access with a comfy back seat, and largely because they're American.
Unfortunately, there are still enough potential buyers who have a chip on their shoulder about foreign cars, and as a salesman you don't want to risk offending a customer even if he really deserves it. Especially in a shitty market. The realtor I've been using drives a 10-yr-old Park Avenue for work. His driver the rest of the time is a Mustang GT. Anyway, I'd just suck it up, buy something cheap, presentable and American, and forget about fun-to-drive. Grand Marquis is a good choice if you can find one. |
Volvo's Not high class, not stupid to maintain. Very COMFORTABLE Parts are rather cheap. Lots of online support for repairs. Turbos can be very fun. Can find turbo with manual trans if lucky.
850 1994-1997 volvos 1000-2900$ s70 v70 1998 - 2000 sedan and wagon 2000-4000 thre are plus and minus to all the models, Once you get out of 2000 the cars do get complicated with their ETC throttle bodies, but not too hard to maintain. Goodluck |
get a civic and boost it, its fun, trust me

I always liked the e39 5 series....It also be a nice car to drive clients around while still being modest...
|
I think the German cars would send the wrong message. You don't want someone to see your car and think you might be a bit too good at what you do. Keep it sensible and, preferably, domestic.
Some clients bring families too. A minivan isn't a bad idea. |
Older BMW, too many years and models in the price range to list any one.
|
I wanna look like I have a head on my shoulders and not some young 23yr old that's immature. I can't do the minivan that's just too much
|
What about an oldskool CRV?
Great all around, cheap, responsible, dependable, big, good on gas. 2001 HONDA CR-V,runs good a/c, clean title http://houston.craigslist.org/ctd/1564987475.html |
I want a car, I drive the mdx all the time and I hate it
|
E30? An older odyssey would be pretty sweet
|
In my eyes you really need to pick a car that sends the right message. If you get something that screams "I'm makin too much money" I know I might be weary of having you as my agent for the mere fact that you might not do best by me. On the other hand, if you get a POS, I'd think your a broke ass no good real estate agent....I mean why else would you drive a shit box. :giggle:
|
So we agree then... an early 90's BMW 5 series. Shows class and that you are at least good at what you do, but it's not a piece of shit so that they think you don't know what you are doing. Plus, nobody thinks a 20 year old BMW is "high end". Man, he drives a '93 BMW 5 series, he must be loaded!

http://www.atozautolights.com/images...s/BM5S8996.jpg Can't we all just get along.......like I said, a e39 5 series, classy but not I'M LOADED! http://www.autoevolution.com/images/...um-1230_10.jpg |
How much of a ragged out piece of shit would an E39 have to be to make it $3,500? 285k miles and flaked off paint and beat up interior? All of the E39's around here in the $5,000 range are rough and either have over 200k miles or have been "modified" (riced out).
|
I hate to say it, but especially in CT, a Buick with fwd would be a very sensible choice. They are so comfortable to drive in, both in front and in back. The fwd is way more practical for us in the N.E. than a Grand Marquis with rwd.

And yes the e39 540i was on my first post and I love them. I think it says class but not snoty |
Eh. If you can find a good condition E39 go for it, but even for $5,000 I can't see finding one without high mileage or condition problems. I would rather have a low mileage and good condition late E34, though that would be even harder to find than the low mileage E39 for that price. Either way, some kind of 5 series would be my choice no doubt. I guess it's the classic round headlight look I like about the E34.

Let me know what comes to mind you want a cheap pos car that looks expensive? You sell houses for up to 1 MIL and can only afford 3500 for a car? You plan to "not look poor" in a sub 4k car? No offense man, but if every criteria in this post is met let me know cause I want 2 of those. |
:giggle::fawk: HATER! It's possible. I do it every day in my Miata. Ballin!
|
:bowrofl: you think you don't look poor in a stock old 1.6 miata? BAHAHHAAH
I feel poor every time I drive my car. Still love it though:giggle: |
Poor to me would be a 1990 civic, a 2001 passat or 2000 Saab 9-5 or 2000 540i is not poor.
|
I guess our definitions of "poor" differ drastically then ;)

Drive your wife's MDX and get her something else. Unless your wife has a job where her car is important, it makes much more sense for you as a real estate agent who needs it for the space for clients, signs, etc...
Trust me, I'm married too so I know the whole give the wife a nice car thing, but this is a different story as your car is not just a point A to point B need, it's part of your business/job. |
300K to 1M is now middle class? I am way behind the curve.
Any 5 series for 4K is likley either very used or as issues. Get a Crown Vic. |

It's funny how the men always get screwed when it comes to cars in a marriage
I have trouble convincing my wife on expenses just to keep my car MAINTAINED. She thinks everything I buy is just because I want to...but doesn't flinch on putting the nicest Michelins on her chariot. Tougher when cars are your hobby I guess. I'm about to have to start laying that pimp hand down strong... |

Yes, CT is one of the most expensive states. It sucks that with 200k I could buy a piece of shit here and in Texas I could get a nice big new house.

Try to find a late 90's Audi A4... I got my 2001 for $5700. It's even the 1.8T Quattro model.

What comes to mind? You're young and dumb. No matter what car you drive, you will be a 23 year old and that will show on your face. That sounds like a good plan to be selling 300k-1M houses year one. Great plan. I would bet that you'll be lucky to get one sale every six months unless you have connections up the wazoo.
