Nope, cruising on an LHD, Wasp Class. USS Bataan LHD-5. Been our here about 4 months. Food is good, but repetitive, and the A/C has been holding just fine. So far nothing significant to report other than my guy Meaty landing that Harrier with the nose-gear up.

It's not a flying tour for me, I'm kinda on staff, manning a desk. Next tour I'll get back to the Hawkeye.

For some reason, I thought you were on the Nimitz. I have to admit that I didn't watch the video until after the post about the water temp; that makes things much clearer.

(Still, pretty fucking amazing that someone thought to build a fixture to accommodate this specific failure scenario, and that it actually got funded and deployed. Does the Harrier have a history of nosegear malfunction?)

Risk analysis - the cost of the risk associated with a harrier nosegear failure on a carrier landing deck far outweigh the costs associated with buying, building, and storing a $5,000 device designed for this exact but unlikely scenario.

I'm not one that would know how often a harrier nose gear failure occurs, but I do imagine that if an aircraft were to crash on a carrier deck, critically disabling not only the aircraft but also the only landing strip in a 500-2000 mile radius, it would probably have some pretty disastorous effects with regard to the combat readiness of the fleet.

What are you guys using for chromecasting LAN videos on an Android tablet? It is a new for me tablet (barely used Azpen A740 - not bad for $45 shipped) and I don't have much set up on it yet. I have not found a very good way to browse my downloaded videos on my windows network and get them playing (then casting).

You want to set up a Plex media server. It is a fork of XBMC and is very good. Here are directions for streaming to a chromcast from plex.

Is Plex really that good? Running a Plex server on my HTPC made it run really slow, and the performance when streaming to other devices was pretty bad. Really poor organization for DVRed TV shows as well. I removed it, it wasn't worth the degradation in performance for me.

I use PLEX media server. I don't run PLEX media server from a laptop. I used to run it from my desktop where I noticed no significant performance cut. Currently, PMS runs from a ReadyNAS. It's pretty seemless.

Play it to your chromecast/smart tv/android/iThing/other computers.

We actually have 2 of those cradles aboard in case neither of the main gear come down and they have to land it on the outriggers. Even if the jet were to take the softest of belly landings with all the gear up, which would be impossible because as soon as the nozzles got close to the ground, they would lose their cushion and hit hard anyways... hard enough to hurt the jet to the point that it would have to be craned off at the end of cruise... not to mention the likelihood of something getting injested into the motor.

The issue with a Harrier operating off the deck of an amphib in an extremely hot/humid environment (like the Persian Gulf in August) is that when they land, they are literally on the last couple minutes of gas. The engine just doesn't have the grunt when it's hot out to land with any fuel aboard. A Harrier may go so far as to fire off it's entire basket of flare/chaff (200lbs worth) to get the jet light enough that it's within the landing window. Now imagine it's carrying a wepon or gun-pod... don't want to jettison those expensive items... so they land on the ship with LITERALLY, ONE MINUTE OF FUEL REMAINING... and if they don't get the first landing correct, they've got just enough gas to point the jet away from the ship, climb to 500ft or so and eject when the motor flames out. It's that tight.

On a carrier deck, when a guy is running out of gas and there's no divert airfield to go to (middle of the ocean), there's always a tanker overhead. The tanker pilot will actually time his pattern overhead the ship to be directly above and slightly in front of the guy low on gas... so if that dude bolters, he just looks up as he climbs out and tanker is already in position... they can link up as they turn crosswind, give the dude a squirt on downwind, and have enough gas in that 2-3 minute evolution to allow him a few more landing attempts. The amphib doesn't have tankers and it wouldn't matter anyways because Harrier would never make it to the tanker.

It's not like that all the time though. When it's cold out and they're not carrying any ordnance, they'll probably have enough gas aboard for a second attempt or maybe even be able to make it to an airfield if one is close enough.

I have had zero problems with Plex in the 6 months I have been running it. Occasionally I will have to cut down the quality to 10.00Mbps,1080p instead of my normal 20Mbps,1080p, but that is only on very intense action movies and it slows down because the server running it is also mining. The BTC takes up a good chuck of processing power, if I turn that off streaming is fine. Tv show organization seems fine for me as long as you set up your folders correctly.

Gotcha. Maybe part of the problem was that I wasn't really wanting to make Plex my primary media setup. I am running Win7 MC for my DVR stuff and it's great at integrating the TV schedule and organizing recorded TV. The only thing I wanted Plex to do was to stream those same recorded TV files to the Roku3 in our bedroom, and it just seemed kind of clunky, and really slowed down the HTPC that the Plex server was running on.

Geez, this is some confusing shit. I've been trying to download Google Cast Extension for about an hour now. If I access it from my tablet it only lets me send an email reminder (which is a link that takes me back to the "send a reminder" page). It will let me access it without problems on my laptop but that is not what I am using to cast with. Ugh!

Now I get it. I finally got the chrome web store to display an error message saying the operating system on my android tablet is not supported yet. That is the reason for the reminder email. OK, so PLEX is out. I need to find something else....
