Help me understand the internet
This may be more of a rant than anything, but I do have a few questions.
First of all, I live in the middle of no where, a place called Beavercreek Oregon. Some POS company called BCTV (beavercreek television co.) has rights to the area, and Comcast doesn't service this area. I have "high speed" internet, but it's incredibly erratic. Here's a screen shot to make you all throw up
I often get "connection has timed out" messages, and sometimes pressing the "try again" button makes it reload fairly quick (I say fairly because i have no idea what fast internet is anymore) and sometimes is just times out again a couple of times, while other tabs reload normally.
I'll get the message on the bottom saying "done", when the site looks like the above (does this on more than just mt.net) or looks completely normal sans any and all pictures, and continues to do so with a number of reloads.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this? As you can see from the time stamp on the screen shot (it's 3:30 now) it took me 15 f'ing minutes to get photo bucket to open, load my picture, and type this thread. And I'm a fast typist.
Anyone have any suggestions? Or is the service just that shitty. If you notice the bitlord icon in my screen shot, I'll say now that all downloads are paused. The strange thing is this shitty internet can continue being shitty whilst bitlord is doing 15+kb/s download and upload, and yes, I consider that fairly fast. I know my internet is good when I get 40kb/s, sad huh?
It just seems like my internet speed is like a very slow heart beat. Usually crappy, with short spikes of being half way decent.

Do you use a wireless setup? I know first hand that older networking cards/routers can cause a bottleneck and make things horribly slow. I'd recommend using Ethernet cables if possible since they are more often then not, faster then wireless or getting new wireless components.
Do you have details on the package you pay for? with our internet service provider, we get 30mb/s download and 2mb/s upload rate with unlimited downloading, but realistically, I never got more then 1/3rd of that, partly due to my wireless setup and the fact that Videotron can't get their **** together. Perhaps your provider's definition of high speed is 1mb/s or worse.
If all else fails, blame your provider. My suggestions may have nothing to do with why the connection is erratic, I'm just running down basic diagnostics in my head and I'll certainly look into what I can do. Good luck!

How dare you complain about Beavercreek Television Co on a public forum. I'm sure if you call them, they will be happy to resolve your problem and give you the fastest internet on the planet. YOU are the only unhappy customer...lol

Call and bitch every chance you get. That may not even get you anywhere in the long run but you should be able to get credits to your bill and whatnot.
Once upon a time I did Tech support for a shitty cable/"high speed" internet company called Ygnition. Our speeds were awful and customers let us know. All I could really do was acknowledge their complaints and give them a credit.
Of course no one had a choice because only one cable company can operate in a given area. Until comcast buys that company out of their area (or completely buys the company) you're probably fucked. I'd suggest trying qwest or whoever you can get DSL from but DSL usually isn't any better than crappy cable.

We do have a wireless setup, but I'm hardwired. Along with my other computer, and my xbox, all of which have the same symptoms. My mom's laptop and my dad's two lap tops do the same thing.
Well F*** me, I just checked downstairs and it appears we have DSL. Phone line comes in, and is split in two. One line to the phone circuit board, one to the DSL modem. The modem then goes to a Linksys router via cat5, which goes to the cat5 circuit board. Both the phone and cat5 circuit boards are splitters which go to the hardwired outlets throughout the house. 5 of each I believe, one of which is what the wireless modem is plugged into. It's a bit of a cluster eff but my dad is a software/networking engineer and he helped set it all up, so I more or less trust it. House was built brand new 2 years ago.
No thanks to the satellite, we do get crappy weather here. Lots of wind and rain, and we're surrounded by trees.
Lets see how long this takes me to upload...6:39pm.

DSL FTL. :( I was trapped in that garbage for a few years, called on a constant basis then eventually ended up ditching them for cable. At most (in 2004) I was getting 300kbps download at an absolute maximum. The cable we switched was 5mbps, now I have a 20mbps road runner account ontop of the 10mbps line through SureWest. Running 3 .com sites on the SureWest cause its rock solid reliable and the RoadRunner line is for my downloading and other misc fagishness
We've got some slow shitty T1 lines @ work for our network and its grueling so I can still relate to your situation.
Call and complain on a daily basis.

Beavercreek lives in 1989. Bunch of lifted truck driving idiots. There's a green belt area behind my house, has some logging roads. Morons drive their mufflerless dirt bikes up and down the street on an almost daily basis. You should have seen the the sign someone put up a few houses down, asking people to be quiet. Anybody know the word "insaholic"? Then a few miles from my house there's a nice wood stretch of road where for some reason people insist on turning into a drive by garbage dump. Someone put up a "liter, your gay" sign. Then some other people chopped down a bunch of trees and left them in their yard for a few days, and then they disappeared. A day or two later a sign went up "stolen wood, call xxx-xxx-xxxx with info". It was spray painted on a piece of wood and screwed to a tree. That's been up for 6 months I believe. F this hick town. Bunch of morons.
I'm moving in a month to a house with 3 dishes on it, hopefully that doesn't mean comcast doesn't service the area. Much more suburban though, not rual like this **** hole. The house my parents built is really nice though.

I've done that before. Generally it either times out saying I don't have internet, or gives me semi decent results. Like I said, the speed fluctuates quite a bit.
I should point out it seems to be in one of it's speedy moods for the last ten minutes or so, including that test.
