Screw DSL, go FIOS!

Joe Perez Apr 13, 2010 10:08 PM

This area is served by AT&T. (Believe me, I tried.)

Doubtful. The very crappiest WiFi hardware currently available (802.11g) is rated for 54 Mbps, and should have no trouble at all sustaining at least 20-30.

That's not bad at all Joe, beyond the upload speed.

I've managed to more or less solve my issue by keeping Bitlord closed if I wanna browse, mostly by doing all my downloading at night. I would think that if I had X amount of internet, Firefox would use X/2 internets, and Bitlord would use X/2 internets. But apparently Bitlord does not like to share it's internets. This was most of my reason for making this thread in the first place, I couldn't understand why if Bitlord was downloading I couldn't use internet.

It could be on either end, but I wouldn't blame the hardware directly. Like Joe said, even the cheap stuff has to meet standards and will work well enough to get you to at least very close to whatever you speed should be. I would think it would be related to wiring somewhere between your gateway and wherever it ties into the pole, or neighborhood. Quite a few people have similar issues and call out the company and eventually convince them to check the lines, and they find something on their pole, or one of the poles in the area that is faulty and needed to be replaced. If they want to keep a customer, they will do this.

Update:

The problem has been getting worse and worse, and I found out my Dad's been resetting the DSL modem every few days. He finally got fed up and took it back. After a test they pronounced the modem dead and gave us a new one.

Just tested my speed at speedtest.net and it's nearly identical to my previously posted speeds, although it seems lightning fast and reliable comparably. Wish we had found this out sooner.

Necrothread!

Update 2: Now living with my gf to avoid the drama that's going on when your parents get divorced after 30+ years of marriage yet decide to try and live in the same house still.

The plus side of this, beyond living with the GF and actually enjoying life, is that Comcast is available here :)

Just downloaded a 1.36gb movie torrent in 36:06 minutes, at an average rate of 662kb/s. I'm a much happier camper.

lordrigamus Aug 1, 2010 09:50 PM

I bet you feel a lot better now.

curly Aug 1, 2010 10:05 PM

I do actually, now my pron doesn't take a year to buffer.

FRT_Fun Aug 1, 2010 10:13 PM

lol. I was surprised to see my internet hitting 30Mb/s. I had only expected 20.

So you have DSL, apparently, and it's intermittently bad. Make sure every phone / printer / answering machine / everything that is connected to the house wiring has one of those DSL filters on it.

If you find you need some, let me know; I have several you can have. I finally switched to Comcast last month and went from 1.5Mb/s to 32Mb/s.

curly Aug 2, 2010 12:18 AM

Read the rest of the thread, namely pos #46. Modem was bad, causing sketchy slow service. Now it's just slow, but I'm gone.

lordrigamus Aug 2, 2010 12:33 AM

Ahahaha. Yeah all porn should be on its own service so it's never slow. Waiting for slow loading porn is like waiting for a brain transplant.

b0ne Aug 2, 2010 03:38 PM

People say bad things about Comcast (including me), but at least their service seems to be consistent, at the very least:

Most of the Comcast tests in this thread are around the same (residental). Tried a different server and got 39ms ping.

levnubhin Aug 2, 2010 03:42 PM

How's this for speed!

Don't ask me why it says Wichita, KS.

As much shit as I have given Charter over the years, here lately it has been fairly decent, both consistent in speed and reliable.

Terrible Up though, always been lower than average.

That's funny because for the past couple months, they have been fairly quick and consistent for me, until now. I've had a lot of issues with charter ever since I got it like ~8 yrs ago. Definitely switching over the day FIOS is available.

Here is the truth:

yes that is MB per second, you can guesstimate by multiplying that number by 10 to compare to yours... aka 70Mb/s up and 28Mb/s down.

I've had my fair share of reliability issues since i have had them for ~10 years, but they have improved little by little every year for the last few years. It's almost tolerable now.

I would LOVE to switch to U-Verse, but they don't currently offer it in my area. Every city around me, just not mine. We are always last.
