HiDef HD 720p Video Camera $140

Aiptek AH-D
Stellar price for the resolution at circuitycity.com- would make an excellent in-car cam

Arkmage 10-03-2007 09:24 AM

very nice... I might get one to try out. I'm tired of making 320x240 video clips :(

hustler 10-03-2007 09:51 AM

thanks. I need this.

m2cupcar 10-03-2007 10:25 AM

this is the cheap version of their hidef cam- missing things like optical zoom, but not stuff you really need for in-car video

aside from home-porn, what else is a cam for?

no optical zoom = no money shot

TurboTim 10-03-2007 10:37 AM

You don't like getting up close and personal, eh

m2cupcar 10-03-2007 11:23 AM

if you need a zoom for the money shot, you're missing all the fun

Actually, fixed focus and no optical zoom are a good things in this application. It means that the individual elements in the lens system are rigidly fixed in place, and cannot move around due to bumps and vibration. Until you reach a certain price point (basically pro-grade lenses with true manual focus and zoom rings) the performance of a fixed lens will tend to be better than that of a variable focus and zoom lens when the camera is rigidly anchored to a moving car.

+1

where's the one w/ opt zoom?

costco has the 3x opt zoom ver for $230

m2cupcar 10-03-2007 02:15 PM

yeah I know, but figured I would point that out for those like TonyC who might want one for more than in-car. I don't think cc carries that one. Walgreens.com was carrying several models at a good discount AND aiptek.com had a factory refurb section at one point.

GTS Miata 10-04-2007 01:15 PM

has anyone bought one of these yet? I'd like to see some video from it... the reviews on it seem very mixed, but I guess you get what you pay for.

.mov seems like it'd be for the loss. Unless you like humping macs.

makes sure and get a shielded HDMI cable too. You don't want interference recoding your digital signal.

actually apple has been kicking ass with their video file technology - I've been using their mpeg4 codec for vid now for over a year. Awesome quality and tiny file size - and with qtalternative, all the pcs are happy.

Just bought a very similar one at Walgreens today. Here is a sample video on youtube. Not bad for the price, but you will need a memory card as the internal memory is only about 5mb and is totally useless.

Trent 10-06-2007 06:01 PM

of course, ALL videos on youtube look like crap anyway thanks to their compression.

paul 10-06-2007 10:25 PM

seriously. did you actually take a video with a high def camcorder to show the quality and then upload it to to a site that reduces the bitrate/quality tenfold?

Shiner is the full name? I'll have to look for that at my local liquor stores.

Shiner is the name of the company. Their most popular style seems to be the Bock, which is generally what you'll get if you go into a bar in Texas and say "Gimme a shiner." That, or someone will punch you in the face.

fuck off... the video was mostly to see if it blurred too badly with motion and what not... the full res videos are considerably better than what youtube shows, but they are definately not hi def regardless of the interpolated resolution and what they advertise.

so overall is that a thumbs up or down for that cam?

m2cupcar 10-08-2007 11:40 AM

Are you sure you have the settings correct? That cam is NOT interpolated up to 720p - it actually has a 720p cmos. The difference between this cam's 720p and true hidef is the compression. But most cams use more compression than the true 720p HD.

Here's a link to some 480p video that is a compressed AVI file.

Does the Aiptek A-HD look better than that? It should- that's what comes from the "lesser and cheaper" Aiptek MPVR 2K6.
