My Harman Kardon AVR 630 quit working. It just sends cracking popping sounds to the speakers. Is this thing worth fixing or should I just dump it? Think someone would buy it for parts?

Wasn't that model like $1000 when it was new? Specs look good enough that I would try looking into getting it fixed. Not sure if anyone would buy it broken for parts. Personally, depending on how long you have had it, I would just dump it and replace it. It's kind of outdated anyway. Tough call.

I'd find a guy in your area worth his salt and see how much he would want to repair it before thinking about dumping it personally. Generally if they kick ass they'll be able to give you an idea of the damage. If you aren't fond of it just ditch it (or put it on craigs list for 20 bucks).

Thats a nice receiver. I have the same style one .....a few models under it and I think it was damn near $600 when I got it a few years back.

It's about 6 years old and doesn't do HDMI switching. Doesn't matter what it was worth new, I don't think it has a lot of value now.

Get an estimate on having it repaired, then go from there. You'd probably be able to buy a receiver that is reasonably current, has current options and of similar quality for less than half of what that cost new.

I have a preference for Denon. But Yamaha and Marantz would also be on my hit list if I were looking to buy right now. IMHO HK is over priced for what you get.

HK is overpriced, and Yamaha would be on the top of my list. I also like Denon, but currently I think Yamaha has better deals out there.

This right here would make the decision easy imo. Agreed, Yamaha has some killer deals out there right now that make it hard to justify not just getting a new one.

Examples of what? Asking for a recommendation on an AV receiver is like asking give me an example of a turbo.

A couple pieces of info are missing. I'm the type that shops by budget for stuff like this. Decide how much you want to spend first.

I'm not sure if Yamaha still has the issue, but there have been problems with the HDMI switching/processing in the past. This is ultimately what led me to Denon.

My setup is as follows:

PS3 for blue-ray and network attached media
Panasonic AE-3000U projector (100" screen)
Denon 2809CI
All Energy c-series with velodyne sub (7.1)
Bell/Dish satallite

Everything is connected via HDMI.

To me my 2809 is a good fit, I just wish that it had OSD (overlay) over HDMI. But I also like the fact that it doesn't touch the HDMI signal at all, so no up conversion and things like that ... the PS3 does that. I think the newer replacement avr-2310 does HDMI upconversion.

The other thing I LOVE about Denon is the Audyssey MultEQ system. Does a pretty good job at setting up your room with the supplied mic. Dynamic Volume is very useful when you are watching Terminator Salvation at 2am with the wife and kids sleeping!

For budge I guess under $500. argh. budgie. budget.

I'd get a price on getting the receiver fixed.

You can get an HDMI 4-1 switcher for $30.

I've been running my HK receiver for 8 years now and it hasn't let me down. Most receivers have room setup with a mic nowadays, but I still use an analog sound level meter and test tones.

Nothing wrong with Onkyo. The ONLY reason I didn't go with one was the stuff I read about them being quite warm natured. I already have enough hardware that runs hot, I don't need to add a receiver that I could fry an egg on to the collection.

I'm going to look around to have it repaired. I don't need HDMI switching as my TV has 3 HDMI inputs and that's all I need (Sat,PC,XBOX).

I was in a similar situation recently.
My denon 5700 died a horrible death. That was a sweet AMP. I spent $50 to ship it to Denon, only to have them tell me they couldn't fix it.

I ended up with a Yamaha rx-3900. This is at end of life, so the pricing is getting pretty good. It's not a musical or powerful an amp as the 5700, but has much slicker technology. The fact that it plugs into the net and can be controlled by an iphone or android is pretty sweet. And it recognizes any windows PC as a music source and can stream from them.
