DSL requires a land line. A lot of younger, modern professionals are using a cell phone as their only personal telephone. Plus, DSL requires you to be a certain distance from you POTS provider, and at least in my area, they are reluctant to expand their infrastructure since they are forced to share it with subcontractors.

So I see a couple of DirecPC users. You have my sympathy- I suffered through that system for a couple of years at a radio station our in Arcadia, FL. If I may ask, where the hell do you guys live where this is your best option?

My home is in the middle of nowhere in the foot hills of NC. DSL is not an option. The local cable provider has cable internet, but I am 1/4 mile off the road, and they will not provide me service, even with me offering to pay all installation cost, including line amplifiers. so the only choices I have are 56Kmodem, or the *** lashing i get from direct PC. basic satellite service (no premium channels) and internet are costing me $148.00 a month.

On a side note, I have satellite internet in Iraq also. 10 people on the system, and the cost is $120.00 a month each. We also had to buy the system at a cost of $4000.00 we have a Turkish ISP, the speed is slower then dial up, and most useful sights including YouTube are blocked

Dorm network with my own wireless router connected to it.
Slowest allowed bandwidth of all the colleges in the state, plus torrents are blocked.

My parents live northwest of Appleton, WI. Cable is about 4 miles away, dunno bout DSL. It's a good ways out in the middle of nowhere...there is something like 3 different farms along their road if it gives you an idea of the setting.

Well after connecting at home. On the "low speed" FIOs connection which is slow as ***** compared to at school (I'll get that tomorrow or tuesday)

home:

Well, then i decided to test my phone. I have a LG Vu through AT&T. mobilespeedtest.com on my phone and it pulled

204.6 kb/s. Um...that means some of you have internet that's nearly just as slow as my phone!!!
