I dont personally like multi monitors, but the idea is that you can have your CAD or whatever program maximized and being used actively while you have other data or information on other monitors.
For example: I often refer to drawings or datasheets for information and dont want to print them out. It sucks to alt-tab back and forth--especially with Pro/E because it's fucking stupid and has multiple windows and can't seem to remember which one I was last using. |
Its all about the multi-tasking.
At home I have 2 monitors. Typically have my IMs open on the right hand side (secondary monitor) with my main programs on the left. In the office I can have my database interface running on the primary monitor with a remote desktop session into a clients system on the secondary monitor. That makes things VERY fast to switch between tasks, vs just Alt+Tab. Also helps with web and graphic design too, but its major baller with CAD based programs. Back in the day of electro-magnetic tablets for CAD input your second monitor for the tool tray was the outside border of the tablet. Its very helpful if I'm doing any DB programming instead of having to waste my paper and ink printing off something to be input, just open on my secondary monitor for quicker reference. I've also been known to watch a movie on one monitor while working with the other.. |
I need to multi-task at home so I can be more of a loser, even faster! :loser: ;)
Seriously, it might only get used for photoshop and porn on my end. I'm gonna go full baller and do a full wrap around, 360 degrees of monitors. You have to crawl under the desk to get into the cockpit. Porn everywhere! |

I'd actually use a second monitor. but it would block my speakers.
the thing I'm holding in my hand is a 1280x1024 LCoS microdisplay. That probably would not block my speakers. https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/att...1&d=1268942780 |
i cant live without dual display setup. when i code in flash i have timeline open one screen and code on the other. when i code for linux i have multiple shells on one screen and code on the other. when i code for web i have code on one screen and browser on the other.
my sysadmin is using a 27" imac + 24" lcd and he has 4 shells on 27" and browser/chat/whatever on the other. |
here are setups at my office:

I just built a computer that will only be used playing my Rock Band drum kits (two of them). Does that count as being a geek?
Yeah, I also drive a Geo Metro. As mentioned before, you are a homo if you drive a Miata, not a geek. Just curious, how many of you have a web server (or some other full time server) in your home? I moved my web server off site but I still keep my Orb server running. |

My webserver / media server / everything shit storage is a crappy old P4 series Celeron 2.4ghz, 1gb ram, and a terrible old board. 4x250gb SATA mirrored to a 1tb SATA3.0 for disk space, 2 1gb ethernet. This box runs Server2k3, DNS, and 2 domains. Its actually falling apart and about to be replaced by a quad processor P4 3.0HT Dell PowerEdge once we upgrade our blades from the office. Yeah I'm not r33t enough to be rocking linux on all those boxes. Several years ago (redhat4 IIRC) I was pretty good with linux but then along came a stable version of Windows and I lost touch with it. Have a notebook with BackTrack3, Ubuntu and XPP installed that I use frequently just not my main thing. |

Holy crap thats cool! I've never actually seen one of those, looks tiny and ultra high res!
Have a P4 3.2HT running XPPro and MediaPortal. The TV is a semi-crappy 50" 1080i DLP using HDMI output from the PC to TV along with a 15" ELO Touch monitor as a remote control. Yeah, I couldn't get the touch screen working properly with Linux. Only a 20gb hdd but 2 1gb ethernet. It also is used as a file server for my LAN and sftp and shell accounts for a large group of friends so they can have access to my mp3's and movies and such. FIOS 25/15 is pretty amazing. Makes my old comcast feel slow as fuck. |

My setups are decent nothing special tho,(still waiting on water before i overclock) I am spoiled though because i cant stand working on a single screen.
Recently joined the home server club, hosting 2 css game servers, a ventrilo voice chat, ftp, and http so i can get my feet wet in web design. |
Only geeky thing I ever did was getting involved in these clubs where we built like bridges, rockets, and shit. It kinda helped me get a scholarship though. Now I'm about to build a SAE baja buggy at school.

Q6600 2.4 quad running at 3.4GHz on air w/ a Scythe Ninja Gigabyte EP45-UD3P mobo 4 x 1GB Patriot DDR2-800 <-- 2 x 2GB OCZ DDR2-1066 Platinum in the mail NVIDIA 9600GT <-- second card and SLI bridge in the mail Seagate Barracuda 750GB x 2, currently RAID0 <-- going to matrix RAID 0/1 one of these days I'm running a custom rig dual booting to Fedora 11 and Mac OS X, both on mirrored drives. As cool as I think Mac OS X is, I find myself using Linux more, guess I'm just used to it. |
