I watched a Modern Marvels yesterday that explained MPEG compression pretty well.

I am no help.

What is the rip software you have?

You are probably looking to rip it do a .avi file or something. You can make a mirror image (backup) of the disk, but would need something like Daemon Tools to mount it. If you extract to an .avi you play it with just about any media player.

Just a quick google search showed this program http://bitripper.com/index.html which looks fairly easy and straight forward. You can change the resolution/quality which will make the file size smaller.

If you want to rip the dvd in original quality and reduce the size you will have to ask someone else as I definitely not an expert.

Search for a program called handbrake. You will also need another program to decrypt the dvd on the fly and they should have a link to it on the handbrake site. I usually end up with dvds being about 1.3 gigs.

You trying to actually make a copy of the dvd that you can use on any dvd player or just a backup for playing on computers? I have been using handbrake for several years just to make backups to .avi files for playing on my computers. Because of netflix I now have a rather large movie collection.

You're an idiot. A DVD is 8GB because it is a dual layer disc with 4.7GB on each layer capacity to maintain a high bitrate to in turn give you the highest image quality possible. You need to take the .VOB files it gives you after you rip it and then convert them into an XVID format or some other equivalent format. That will compress it into like 1GB or so, but you will lose image quality. Its not rocket science. Good image = more space. Hence why they release bluray.

There are a select few discs that won't work with dvd shrink, and most of those will work with ripit4me.

Check this out, I was reading on Doom9.org and it has good feedback. You might need to read how to use it. SUPER &copy

After you rip the dvd you should be able to use that program to re-encode the vob files into a h264 encoded video file. It lets to choose the wrapper, and all kinds of other cool ****.

Scratch that. Use this and tell it to encode in x264. FairUse Wizard - Easy DVD to iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Classic, AppleTV, Zune, Xbox 360, PS3, Standalone DivX Player, TiVO HD. Encode with DivX, XviD, H.264, VP7 and ffVFW codecs!

You wont get a more simple menu driver re-encoder than this.

check out Doom9 you can convert anything to anything with their guides. Some are much more technical than others. Basically, if you want the best quality for the space, you need to make more effort, but the basic guides are good enough for most people.

This is a decent guide for handbrake.

This is the software that I use to decrypt the dvd on the fly.

On my Quad core intel machine it takes me about an hour to rip a dvd and encode it to a 1.3gig avi file.

I use SUPER. it's pretty much the worst interface on the planet, but it converts everything to everything.
