evos and stis
i have some friends who have these cheater cars-evo8 and sti... i also have a friend with the talon tsi(awd) so he has a cheater car as well... how will a greddy'd miata hold up with these cars? i have all my parts but didnt install them yet. maybe this weekend... i still need a wb02 to tune better. any awd kill stories out there?

im calling them cheater cars because of the stock turbo... we as roadster owners have to conjure setups like greddy and the infamous other setup which i wont mention... anyways, im talking about in a race... i like to drift and they like to street race... since ill have turbo again soon, i wanted to know heads up before i play with them how bad ill get beat, how much ill keep up, and whatnot. i had a greddy/bipes setup at 1 point at a dangerous 10psi and i kept up with my evo buddy(he just got the car and learned stick on it haha) so, now it will be very different. this time ill have emanage and upping boost...

Its more interesting to see how the evo and sti fair on the race track. I know 200 whp with 440/350 gc's and agx nudges out the awd cars at the local track, on both courses.

If you want to know about pure straigtline stuff, just do the math:
For the sake of argument, we'll say both STi and EVO make 300crank and weigh in at 3250lbs. Those are close enough for this example. W/AWD they pay a 20% driveline loss, so both make 240awhp compared to a 1.6 stock Greddy's 150rwhp (on a good day).
Sti/EVO: 13.5lbs/hp
Greddy: 14.6lbs/hp
They'll have you off the line by several car-lengths until you hit second, and then they'll slowly pull on you until you give up.
However, a stock WRX with it's 227hp only carries about 185whp, which makes 17.5 lbs/hp. He'll have you off the line, but as soon as you hook up, you'll reel him.
With a 200rwhp Miata, a stock Sti or EVO should be no problem from a roll, and you'll kill a WRX. But as was pointed out earlier, if street racing prowess is your goal, first invest in ***** enlargement surgery like I did... it does wonders for yor confidence. I'm not above a little friendly run through the gears with a worthy opponent if the opportunity presents itself, but now I get my ego-boost 8" at a time.

Greddy miata tuned at 10-12psi(about 200whp) will pull on a stock evo and sti from a roll. Never raced them from a stop. Stay in boost and you will pull on them every time!

at 170rwhp I was passing stock EVOs on the track....they got me in the straights if I wasn't on the gas quick enough, but I would always catch up around the twisties....I'm sure anything above that power level would put them in thier place....unmodded of course.

wow thanks you guys! well, i intend to have atleast 200hp but if i can get more, of course. and no, im not the street racer type/stop light racer... i like to drift, but ocassionally on a late quiet nite, just to see wassup ya kno? well, if anyone else has anything to share, share please! im getting a lot of post hits for this! hehe

Seriously, the majority of EVOs AND STIs are modded. It's really easy to get an EVO and an STI into the 12s with a reflash. And stockers into the mid-hi 13s. How many Greddys are in the 12s or 13s even? Having dragged both, I'll say it's infinitely easier to launch an AWD car given a couple times at the dragstrip. And this is on street tires at stock psi. Miatas are a lot harder to launch, especially with around 200whp on street tires. That advantage goes to AWD even more on the street without the nice traction of the prepped dragstrip. Not condoning street racing but once you've lost out of the hole, you've lost the "race" unless you live in BFE and are approaching 100+mph.
EVOs and STIS are much more comfortable running at triple digits. The stock STI turbo is about the same size as a 16G. The Evo turbo is even nicer as it's an upgraded 16G with bigger turbine housing. Both take well to more boost.
My other car is a highly modded 04 Forester XT which shares the STI 2.5 block. Stock it has a smaller turbo. I've got a pretty big one on now. It hasn't been to the strip yet, as I don't really want to thrash the 5sp it shares with the WRX. It's not as stout as the STI 6 speed and I don't have 5 grand to figure out the limitations of it.
It's a beast in straight line performace and a decent handler with STI takeoff suspension, but the reason I picked up another Miata is they're just a helluva lot more fun.

My WRX was at 240 whp and my boosted SC Miata is not even in the same ball park in a straight line. My miata handles much better and will eat most EVOs and STis at autox or in the twisties, but if you want to win drag races it will take about 200 whp and you will have to hope that your AWD buddies aren't willing to drop the clutch. My best in the WRX was a 14.1 in the 1/4, but I didn't abuse my clutch or tranny. With a hard launch I should have been in the mid 13's.

My turbo is a Forced Performance "Green". It flows 49 lb/min, the next step up from a popular Mitsu 20G. Has Garrett compressor wheel.
This was on 22 psi running 50/50 alky. Other mods are the basics. Intake/exhaust, bigger Top mount intercooler, injectors. Custom tune obviously.
FOr what it's worth, an '07 stock turboed STI with just intake, exhaust, header, and ECU reflash just ran a 12.1 at 113 on pump gas.
