how tough is it to get a NASA HPDE4/TT license?
the title says it all. I want to try the time trial thing this year at MSR and Hallett (i could probably do well there). I've done 23 HPDE trackdays.
I think this is be most responsible, reasonable, and safe way to enjoy a little friendly competition and not put the car on its roof / drive it home. |

NASA Time Trial
The few people I know who have done it say it takes about 15 HPDEs to progress up to Group 4. Your best bet is to find your regional director and talk to them about it, especially since you have a lot of on track experience through other groups already. |
Fuck progressing through the groups. If you are fast enough, just sign up for group 4 and have the regional TT director sign you off.
Probably a good idea to email the regional TT director and let them know you want to get signed off for a TT license at the next upcoming event. Seems real easy. Oh, and I haven't done this but have considered it and searched around a bit. |
The bad thing is that NASA Norcal and NASA Socal aren't very competitive.... there are only about 2-3 cars per class.

We don't get any NASA events up here beyond the occasional space shuttle flyby.
The only TT event I've seen here so far was tied in with the Mazdaspeed race weekend. Looking at my HPDE times I'd have finished mid pack out of the 20 some odd cars in the non pro group. Of course many in the "amatuer" group own tuning shops and drive, or used to drive, Iscc and SCCA. TT would be great. I hope we start seeing more here. Thank god HPDE isn't as insane here as it is in the great state of TX. |
