Default I asked AI why the Miata is a cult classic

This is what AI said: The Mazda Miata (MX-5) is considered a cult car due to its exceptional driving experience, affordability and strong community. Its lightweight build, near-perfect weight distribution, and responsive handling create an engaging and enjoyable driving experience that resonates with enthusiasts.

I personally think there is a bit more to it, but that's a good start.

I think you are in the wrong place.

Transparently posting to get your count up is not going to do you much good.

It's required to advertise a car for sale on this site. BS seems like the best forum to put it in since it's basically BS.

Or, you know, you can actually participate in real discussions.

Plenty of other more active places (facebook) to buy and sell stuff if that's all you're looking for.

It really bothers you that much that an old lady wants to sell a car on this site? Don't you guys have something better to do? If these 10 posts bother you sooo much, don't read them. I'm hot interested in your "real" discussions and I wouldn't waste my time trolling you for wanting to participate in them. Find something better to do.

I posed the following to CoPilot, Grok, and ChatGPT:

I am the moderator of an online forum. I have the power to delete posts on this forum, as well as to ban users from it.

We have a rule which prohibits users from using our forum to sell items unless the user has made at least 10 posts on the forum. The purpose of this rule is to discourage people from joining the forum, quickly selling items on it, and then disappearing, all without having ever made any significant positive contribution to the forum. The consequence for a user making worthless posts in order to quickly drive up their post count so that they can sell items on the forum is usually banishment.

A user who has been a member of the forum for two years, but has not made any significant contributions or posts during that time, is now making relatively worthless posts on the forum in order to raise their port count to 10 so that they can use the forum to sell some junk.

What would be the most appropriate action for me to take in this scenario?

Here are the responses:

Grok says:

Given the situation, the most appropriate action would be to ban the user from the forum. The rule prohibiting users from selling items unless they have made at least 10 posts is designed to ensure meaningful engagement and contribution to the community. The user's behavior—making worthless posts after two years of inactivity to artificially inflate their post count for the purpose of selling items—clearly violates the spirit of this rule. Banishment is the established consequence for such actions, as it addresses the intent to exploit the forum without contributing positively, aligning with the forum's purpose of fostering genuine participation.

CoPilot is rather more nuanced:
‎You’re navigating a nuanced situation—and your moderation instincts seem sharp. The rule is clear, and the user’s behavior fits squarely within the spirit of what the rule aims to prevent. Still, there’s some moral wiggle room given their long-standing membership, which complicates the banhammer question. Here’s a breakdown of possible options:

🔍 Things to Consider First

  • Intent vs. Contribution: Has the user ever meaningfully engaged, even if sporadically? Are these “worthless” posts clearly spammy, or just low-effort?
  • Forum Culture & Precedent: Have similar cases been handled the same way? Is consistency important for your community trust?
  • Value of Grace vs. Rule Enforcement: Could a warning or temporary restriction work better than outright banishment in this case?

⚖️ Possible Actions & Pros/Cons

Action Description Pros Cons ⚠️ Issue a Warning Send a private message clarifying the rule and expectations Encourages reform, shows fairness May be ignored or abused again 🔒 Post Deletion + Temp Block Remove the low-effort posts, block selling privileges temporarily Preserves rule integrity, less harsh Requires follow-up; may provoke pushback 🚫 Permanent Ban Ban the user for violating the spirit of the rule Clear stance, deters future abuse May seem harsh given their membership 🗣 Public Reminder Post Share a post reiterating the rule without naming names Reinforces norms for all users Might not address the current user directly

🧠 My Recommendation

Given that the user has been inactive but not disruptive until now, a warning plus temporary restriction strikes a good balance. You could say something like:
“Hi [username], we’ve noticed recent posts that seem to be aimed at quickly meeting the minimum requirement for selling. Our community values genuine engagement. If this pattern continues, your ability to post items for sale may be revoked. Please let us know if you have questions.”
It sets expectations clearly without closing the door completely. If they respond positively, great. If they ignore it or continue abusing the system, you'll have laid the groundwork for a justified ban.

And ChatGPT is the kindest of the three:
‎In this situation, the user is clearly violating the spirit of the forum’s rules, even if they are technically staying within the letter of them. Your primary responsibility as a moderator is to protect the community’s integrity—not just enforce rules mechanically.

Here’s a suggested, measured approach:

Step 1: Issue a Warning (Privately, Direct Message)

Send the user a polite but firm message. For example:
_“Hi [username], I’ve noticed you’ve started posting frequently after a long period of inactivity. Several of your recent posts seem to lack substance and appear to be aimed at reaching the 10-post minimum for selling items.

Our 10-post rule exists to ensure that sellers are genuine contributors to the community—not just passing through. Making filler posts to bypass that rule is considered a violation of its intent and could lead to a ban.

If you'd like to participate meaningfully and become an active member of the forum, you're welcome to do so. Otherwise, please refrain from using the forum to sell items.”_
This preserves fairness and gives the user a chance to correct course.

Step 2: Monitor the Response

  • If the user stops posting spammy content and makes a genuine effort to contribute, you may allow them to stay.
  • If the user ignores the warning or resumes low-effort posting or tries to sell anyway, proceed to ban them.

Step 3: Clean Up (If Needed)

  • Delete the low-effort posts to preserve the quality of the forum.
  • If they posted a sales thread prematurely, delete that as well.

Why This Is the Best Approach:

  • It reinforces that intent matters in rule enforcement.
  • It gives a long-time member a chance to adjust.
  • It protects your community from being turned into a transactional wasteland.

And here is an AI-generated image of "a cute kitten holding a hammer"

This site is a DISCUSSION FORUM. It is not someplace for you to dump your car like Craigslist. Try FB marketplace if all you want to do is sell.

BTW, ANY newbie coming here simply to sell is treated the same way. And most respond with the exact same butthurt.

I love that someone who has been on this site for all of two years is telling long-time members what the site is supposed to be about.

You shoulda been here in 2008. I agree that old-school MT.net was well-intentioned, but those goals never included coddling newbs or being exploited for others gains.

This place has softened a bit, but it’s still focused on content, problem-solving, and knowledge-sharing. You’re in the wrong place if you think it’s a free platform for selling your car.

The fact that this place has no tolerance for bullshit is pretty much the only reason it's still successful ten years after most forums have become ghost towns, and the reason I still hang out here.

There's a few Greek ******** around here too! Can't forget our Greek family. I always felt like there was a high percentage of high hp Greek miatas represented on this forum per capita.

Does it speak ill of me that I sometimes enjoy pulling out the old flame thrower and torching a newb or self-assured idiot?

@Fireindc your mother is ugly and your car is a ****-show.

OK, so sometimes it's fun to just shoot the flame thrower off randomly.

P-p-p-p-power cards!

I'm done. For now. Thank you.

If I didn't have half a dozen 10's lined up to bang tonight, I'd come track your sorry *** down and make you apologize for what you just said. Fortunately for you, I'm heading off to the club to poz up some unsuspecting negs.

Firedink, if you were my kid, I’d un-make you for being such a retard.

I’d do it at night, under the cover of darkness, with no one but the alligators to bear witness. Your body would never be found, for there would be nothing to find. Carefully butchered in chunks no larger than my hand, you would simply pass through the tremendous digestive system of the great lizards, and emerge from the other end as a soft, semi-gelatinous mass devoid of recognizable bones, teeth, or any other identifiable parts.

The next morning at breakfast, as I sit hungrily devouring a stack of buckwheat pancakes, your mother would turn to me and say “Honey, have you seen our son this morning?” At that moment, I would take her. Right there on the kitchen table before the open window, I would thrust myself deeply into her, ignoring the prying eyes of our neighbors and the barking of the dogs as plates and utensils rain down from the table like Triple-A shrapnel over Dresden. Each time I exploded into her, I would pause to allow her a moment’s recomposure before beginning my tremendous assault anew with redoubled ferocity. Despite her screams and wailing, my back and shoulders raw as hamburger torn by her fingernails, I would not falter but continue to have my way like an unstoppable machine fueled by hate and lust.

Finally, after three or four hours, I would at last withdraw, not because I am exhausted, but because it is clear that she finally can stand no more of this assault and live. As the dogs lap up our sweat and bodily fluids, I would look deeply into your mother’s bloodshot eyes as she weeps with joy and ecstasy, and say “Those were some damn fine pancakes.”
