1080p in that price range, I like this one: http://www.plasmacity.com/PROJECTOR/...SHI/HC5000.htm

Awesome blacks, contrast, & brightness, quiet, 5000 hr lamp

On the cheaper end, Sanyo Z5 (720P but very nice, extremely easy to install w h&v shift, dead silent)
On the more expensive end, JVC Pro DLARS1U (super bad ass 1080p DILA, BEAUTIFUL picture for under $10k)

I used to have a sharp projector and loved it, so here is my pick it's in a lower price range and only does 1080i, but it does have an HDMI interface.

AND BELOW IS WHAT I WOULD WANT.

Ben, it sounds like you've done your homework (or at least have the vocabulary down). I did all my homework here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/
Just spend a week or so reading through the Projector Forums and you'll find yourself a very informed comsumer.

I can help, but need more information. Answer these questions for me:

What is it going to be used for percentage-wise for movies/SD-TV/HD-TV/games? Do you own HD-DVD or BluRay (or plan to own soon)?
What are the dimensions of the room?
What is the overall color of the room and what kind of light control do you have wrt windows? ie, do you plan to watch it in the daytime with the windows open?
How do you plan to mount it. Wall/ceiling/table?
What is the projection distance?
What is the viewing distance?
How big is the screen going to be?
Can you place the projector directly centered laterally on the screen, or will it be placed off-center?
There are still some good quality LCD projectors out there, but most are now DLP. Do you know about the "rainbow effect" or "screendoor effect" (just google if not).

I have the Panasonic PT-AE900u and love it. I got it when they were giving $400 rebates and 40free Blockbuster rentals. I paid $1400 total. I got it from Abes of Maine. My room is very dark w/12ft projection distance and 11ft viewing distance. I went with a 92" blackout cloth screen for the complete DIY setup. The room is so choice.

What's your price range? I'd recommend going entry level and enjoy it now. Projector prices are like PCs. Next year you'll pay a grand less for HD projectors.

Mitsu HD1000u is a good under $1k projector that does 720p.

Hell I'm still running an Infocus SP4805 and while it doesn't do native 720p the downconversion of 720p still looks incredible on my 110 inch DIY screen. I'll wait til the bulb goes, then upgrade.

In the end, it's all relative to how much FU money you have.

InFocus projectors are awesome, but the company is going under, and you soon will not have support for any problems, getting bulbs might be a big problems. I know a lot about their products, my dad was their cheif software engineer. I got my projector for free :) almost no point in finishing college now...

I just have my infocus X1, and a big Da-Lite screen that I got second hand. Looks good enough for me at this point, but I really haven't seen anything else in person.

So, curly, what you are saying is that I should probably pre-buy a replacement bulb?

I wouldn't worry about it. There are aftermarket x1 lamps.

Loki047 05-21-2007 02:16 PM

now im thinking making my own :) lumenlabs.com Im just having trouble finding HD resolution LCDs.

expensivehobby22 05-21-2007 03:16 PM

Good to know Ben.

I love having the projector/HT setup. Makes video games so much more involving, especially the driving ones.

I had an X1 for awhile, but the rainbow effect got to me.
