I hate shitty internet service.

I've spent the majority of the past several months living in a hotel in NYC. Times Square, in fact. Broadway & 49th. Nice place. You'd think that maybe it'd be reasonable for a person to expect that internet service here might be better than at a Motel 6 in East Roosterpoo, AR, but you'd be wrong.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/485361735.png

It's gotten to the point where I've given up on trying to use uTorrent. I just set up a VPN connection for myself into one of the servers at the jobsite. I use it to do the downloads, then pick 'em up on a USB drive when I'm in the master control room.

miatamania 05-31-2009 10:34 AM

wow that is terrible.

This is my parents house that I am at until I get a job...>.<

Braineack 05-31-2009 11:12 AM

That makes me lol. I just torrented all of Bill O' Reilly's books to listen to while sitting on the beach tomorrow.

neogenesis2004 05-31-2009 02:02 PM

They most likely are capping it on purpose joe. That way each customer can get an equally shitty experience. Even though bandwidth capping sounds high rent for a hotel, even in Manhattan, its actually pretty easy to set up.

If you had done a tracert while you were there you likely would have seen it going through a local server before hitting roadrunner.

Braineack 05-31-2009 03:23 PM

I hated life when i was in Savannah. They had a wireless connection only with a 100kbs download speed and it constantly disconnected.

Thing is, it's not as though I'm connected wirelessly, or even to a hole in the wall. There is a Toshiba PCX2500 cable modem sitting under my desk, and the "If you have difficulties" placard in the room instructs me to call Time Warner for tech support. It ain't just this room either. Since January, I've been in five different rooms (on three different floors) and it's the same everywhere.

This is actually slower than dialup in both directions. I haven't accessed the internet at speeds like this since 1996, and that was through a VAX termserver (and the web was a hell of a lot less graphics-intensive then, to say nothing of flash / java / etc). Even FTP is horrifyingly painful.

the_man 05-31-2009 05:41 PM

How do you watch porn? At the least you should ask for some of the adult channels/movies to be included with your room.

And that's what I live with 365, not just temporarily at a hotel. Comcast says it'll be $16,000 to bring anything out here. Currently I have BCT, or Beavercreek Cable Television. But I'm pretty sure it stands for BFG Cable Television

elesjuan 05-31-2009 06:25 PM

I'd be blowing up those Time Warner assholes' phones, Joe. That shit sucks!!

y8s 05-31-2009 08:53 PM

joe, why not get a wireless 3G connection?

there are "ways" of getting unlimited data and tethering for around $75 a month plus plenty of minutes and messaging.

granted the upload speed leaves something to be desired.... but here's a bluetooth tethered example from about 20 seconds ago:

you carry a cell phone? a $20 addon plan for unlimited data is pretty damn cheap. plus my 1 cent phone as a built in honest-to-god GPS.

The slowest speed of any test I've ever done on my mobile. Typically I get around 2.0mbps down and 512k up. Not a bad latency on this test though.

Yeah, but I use a T-mobile pre-paid unit. For the relatively limited amount that I use it, it costs me about $30 during months when I'm mostly on the road, and nothing when I'm at home.

I know- excuses, excuses... What can I say, I'm a cheapskate by upbringing.

neogenesis2004 05-31-2009 10:25 PM

Don't forget the fact that those 3g unlimited data plans actually have a 5GB cap. Also, they have god awful pings. I tried playing CS in a hotel one time on my Verizon aircard and it was a slideshow.

Apparently I just have to figure out y8s' "secret" for unlimited data. As to ping time, I don't play online videogames.

Anybody ever try bittorrent over 3G? Was it allowed?

waitaminut. where did you go and take cats?

also: our cats would have been a mishmash of fur and cat meat if they were in the same carrier.

btw, anyone know the real word for "cat meat" like venison for deer or beef for cows?

Braineack 06-01-2009 09:05 PM

cats went to my in-laws. im in virgina beach for a few days.

So thats why you were not on gmail today Scott. I was bored at work and had no one to talk to.

Interesting...

In 2006, in the city of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, a restaurant called Fangji Cat Meatball was the subject of considerable protest. (source: EastSouthWestNorth: The Shenzhen Cat Meatball Restaurant)

There is an online cat butchery, which refers to their product as simply "kitty beef". Online Cat Meat Butcher, Buy Cat Meat Online, Kitty Beef

Here is a page which describes the proper way to skin, prepare, and cook a cat: How to Eat Cats

In wartime Great Britain, cat meat earned the nickname "roof-rabbit". CATS - FRIEND OR FOOD

Lots of other articles about the consumption of cat by various cultures, but none of them seem to yield a specific noun to describe the meat.

Sidebar:

A former co-worker of mine, who prior to joining Harris was the chief engineer of a directional AM station in Memphis, tells an interesting story.

For those not familiar with AM transmission equipment, we're typically dealing with power levels of 25-50 kilowatts at the bigger stations, and in AM, the tower itself is the radiating element. Directionalizing an AM signal (focusing the signal over a specific area to maximize coverage of a population center, or nulling it out of an area to avoid interfering with another station) is done by erecting multiple towers and varying the phase and magnitude of the signal hitting each one. Imagine ripples in a pond interacting with one another. At the base of every tower is a box called the ATU, or Antenna Tuning Unit, which consists of a bunch of large coils and capacitors designed to match the imperfect load of the antenna to the source impedance of the phasor, which is what distributes the signal from the transmitter to all the towers. Here is a typical ATU:
http://www.lbagroup.com/technology/L...0Gradient).jpg
(note that the young woman is not typical. Transmitter engineers, without exception, are all fat grumpy old men.)

One cold spring morning, one of the towers in the array went completely out of whack. This is sometimes caused by ice forming on the tower, however on the morning in question it was dry and clear. The tower was de-energized and switched out of the array, and the ATU opened for inspection. Inside the ATU, lying on the bottom, was the mostly-intact head of a large cat. No other recognizable portion of the cat was found, though every square inch of the interior of the box was coated in blood, charred meat and burnt fur. I am told that cat remains are surprisingly difficult to remove from tuning coils.

Moral of the story: A cat is capable of passing through an opening no larger than its own asshole, and they tend to seek out warm places to rest during periods of cool weather. ATUs tend to run warm, and cats tend to react explosively with high voltage, high current RF devices. Make sure all external openings of your tuning network are properly sealed.

Let me show you some typical transmitter engineers:

http://sdradio.net/__oneclick_upload...engineers1.jpg

So yes, in the proper context (the floor of a trade show, where she has no choice but to listen tolerantly to their stupid stories and lewd comments) the office accountant is considered to be sufficiently hot to double as the booth babe and save them the cost of hiring a model.

I should add that at the Sony, JVC, Ikegami, Grass Valley and Panasonic booths (where they draw a much younger and hipper crowd) no expense whatsoever is spared on the plethora of booth babes.

Joe already alluded to this, but I'm pretty sure I once saw it described as "sweet and sour chicken." I cannot be absolutely certain, but something wasn't right at the Hunan Golden Dragon. It was definitely NOT chicken.

Pretty sure my iphone on edge is faster. I'd actually do a speedtest there but i'd hate to waste the bandwidth.

I lied. 20 kbps down and 47 up on the iphone using edge in the alaska interior.

Basic Charter high speed in shit town Alabama. It gets the job done until I can justify paying to upgrade to higher speed. I have no other company options right now.
