I hate Smart cars

I HATE THEM! A freind and coworker of mine got a Smart a few days ago and all I have heard at work from him and everyone else is about the stupid car. Its ugly, not practical, doesnt do anything any special besides the small size for parking. Im very ill about hearing claims of 100+mph, and its "quick" (when Smart cays top speed of 90, and thats probably with a 30mph tailwind), and that it gets 45-60mpg (its rated at 33/40, not THAT good). Just thought I would vent. Ive been hearing about this stupid fucking urkel car for 3 days now. Ive been calling it an Urkel car, since thats the only comeback I have. Im going to bring him a print out of specs tomarrow though to shut him up. 0-60 in 13 seconds, top speed of 90. Yeah, thats quick... and I can actually carry groceries in my car. :crx: EVERYONE stops him to ask about the car. ITS A FUCKING SWATCH CAR! FAG!!!

Maybe Im just pissed I dont drive the smallest car at work anymore. Though mine is quite a bit lower, but longer and wider. I have it in all the right places. Stupid hippy car. He even put his fancy apple sticker on the back, I HATE MACS TOO!

Lucky for you, there are now a couple of good alternatives for the Smart. I founds these pics from my Swedish amature-racer-forum.

Behold! The Porsche 411, The Smarvette and of course the flaggship: The Porsche Smarga:

NA6C-Guy 02-26-2009 06:01 AM

Any of those I would drive if driven by a Hyabusa powerplant. Smart car = 3 cylinder 1 liter pussy engine.

I thought they where a 0.6L / 3 cylinder?

mazda/nissan 02-26-2009 06:58 AM

haha, I have nothing against smart cars, except for the fact that everyone thinks they are god on earth. My university just opened up an Apple store, I guess they think every student on campus has an Apple laptop. The only apples the kids have are iPods, the school is the one with the Apples in the labs that no one knows how the fuck to use...

xturner 02-26-2009 07:03 AM

I really kind of like Smart cars - they make my Miata seem like an uber-hetero ride.

thirdgen 02-26-2009 08:34 AM

Urkel...that is funny. I saw one the other day and I was like, "that thing kinda looks like a redesigned BMW Isetta, that Steve Urkel drove." The Isetta is WAY cooler than that stupid Smart. Hippy save the world POS.

TrickerZ 02-26-2009 08:56 AM

you need to get something more important to worry about. it's the true sign of insecurity that a miata owner is so excited about another car to pick on.

for what it's worth, go to a large city in europe. smart cars aren't the only tiny cars. but they DO get to park in street parking spaces nose-first instead of parallel.

beyond that, I think you miss the point of the SMART. which is pointless to get into here.

Zaphod 02-26-2009 10:13 AM

Hi NA6C-guy,

you want a Hayabusa engine in a Smart... no problem.

I think this is going to kill a lot of other cars.

I expected this thread to be complaining about cars with computers that dont let you do anything. I kinda like the Smart, although I will never own, or drive, one. The guy should be shot for putting an apple sticker on anything.

My mom's getting a cabriolet in a few months, trading in her Beetle convertible. You guys don't know what you're talking about, it's got all sorts of F1 tech in it; mid-engine rwd, paddle shifters...

I mostly hate the transmission, it's like driving with someone just learning how to drive stick, super laggy and jerky. It is pretty nimble, and might be kinda fun to drive if it were faster and everyone on the road didn't stare at you.

Newbsauce 02-26-2009 11:29 AM

Tons of them around the DC area. Most people that buy them simply do it because they are trendy, not because they can fit in small spaces and live in an urban area. Most of the people's houses I've seen them at have ample parking (think driveway).

Maybe we should rebadge the early geo metro's and sell them for 10k? :)

sbrian2 02-26-2009 12:26 PM

They made an ugly little car with todays technology that can't do what my nearly 20 year old CRX can. At least my CRX looks decent. I still get 45+ mpg with over 240K on the clock. I've also never had any mechanical failure other than an alternator and even have the original clutch still. Beat that hippy car!

cardriverx 02-26-2009 12:26 PM

And I can't see the smart going 240K...ever.

I see that they have a purpose for small or congested areas. I just don't like the smugness of some owners that it is some world beater on gas mileage. They aren't. They are good, but any 1500 lb (or whatever they are) 600 cc vehicle should be.

messiahx 02-26-2009 01:24 PM

I've seen smarts even in my redneck town. I just shake my head, because there are other vehicles out there that can perform better with the same gas mileage that are larger and in the same price range. It's all about trends.

The Smart is pointless. It was billed as a cheap city car with excellent gas mileage. $20k+ is not cheap for a 2-seater. "33/40 EPA" is not excellent gas mileage; in fact, for a car that size it's simply abysmal. They are also too long to park nose-in on the street.

They are worse than the Prius; the only people who buy them are rich yuppie fucks who care about having the latest hip car. At least the Prius is a decent car on its own merits (honest-to-god 40-45mpg, huge trunk, huge backseat); who the fuck would willingly pay $20+k for a 2-seater with a tiny-ass trunk and Corolla gas mileage if it wasn't SUPER HIP BRO

Qckslvr 02-26-2009 02:04 PM

One of our suppliers uses a Smart for a delivery car. I have to admit it must be tougher than it looks, because the drivers abuse the shit out of it. They are on there second Smart now. The first one got hit by a Freightliner, and the driver of the Smart walked away.

Last weekend I saw a camouflaged Smart parked at the Starbucks. I got a good laugh out of that.

Machismo 02-26-2009 02:13 PM

Just a "trendy" car....nothing Smart about it. Uses more resources than most production vehicles just to make the things. How "smart" is this?

hip was the guy I saw driving a smart at my first miata meet. in 2001. they're not hip, they've been around forever. just not here.

go to europe. people own tons of them there. and not because they're "new and fun".

in italy a couple years ago:
http://gallery.y8s.com/d/13670-3/DSC01231.jpg

and Smarts aren't the only dinky car there.

http://gallery.y8s.com/d/13676-3/DSC01233.jpg

but they are everywhere.

turns out, people in big cities also like small, underpowered motorbikes:

http://gallery.y8s.com/d/14731-3/DSC01444.jpg

oh by the way, they're not 20k, they are $11,590. Dealer markup is an unfortunate side-effect of your "smug car" complaint.

Machismo: you have details/sources on it using more resources to produce one? It may be related to EU recycling requirements.

jayc72 02-26-2009 02:41 PM

Interesting. Looking at the US spec on the smart fortwo it says 33/40. Canadian spec says 5.9l/100km and 4.8l/100km. That works out to 40/49. Canadian on the base model is $14,990. US is $11,990. There certainly is some misinformation out there, and in my mind $15K for a NEW car is cheap. I hope that the diesel engine is brought back into Canada, that thing had crazy fuel economy.

For what the Smart is I think it is brilliant. Much like the Maita it is a pure realization of a goal. If I didn't have kids I would totally own one for a daily driver especially if I could get a diesel power plant.

Want to talk about trendy and stupid? Hybrids.Fuck hybrids, small turbo diesel is the future.

Thats my biggest complaint. Its not purchased for the fact its small, its purchased because the people buying them want to be hip and cool. I want to be trendy and save the world because I get 33mpg... :hustler:

The main reason Im so pissed about the Smart in this case is we dont live in a congested european city, we have plenty of wide roads and parking. He also isnt rich, he just wants to own a new trendy car to look like hese rich or something. Paid $12k for it when hese in the middle of getting married and trying to buy a house. Very smart... all on pretty low income. He needs a good smack from reality. Its not the perfect car, its not needed in this area, and he cant afford it and a house on his income.

Machismo 02-26-2009 03:29 PM

y8s - There I go spouting before scouting again. I believe I heard it was a Top Gear episode, but I have not seen it; nor can I find it.
Agree with ya on the recycling aspect, and prolly had to with Tesla batteries spending big bucks early on to meet requirements for production here in the states.
Great.......now I have to go spend my afternoon reading up on the the thing. ;)

Also - third pic down in your post - the cabriolet looking thing with tire on trunk. That- of all things is pretty cool. Almost like a desensitized Thing.

Instead of bringing him a spec sheet of the car why don't you mention this and the obscene impracticality of owning one? That would probably make him feel like a douche enough.

Bond 02-26-2009 04:23 PM

My dad preordered a Smart a year before the came out in the states for 16k. When he finnally got it and drove it, it sucked. Shit transmission. Shit ASM/TCS or whatever. No power. Shit MPG for the size. Then it had a computer problem that made it run on two cylinders so he brought it back to the dealer, they said they cant fix it and he is SOL.

So... he reset the computer, put it on craigslist, and two days later had 18k in his pocket and no POS Smart car.

Yup. And on top of that, it drinks premium. There are definitely other more practical cars that get the same or better gas mileage for less money, they just don't have the "OMG look at that freaking car!" appeal.

icantthink4155 02-26-2009 07:44 PM

Everyone should drive Miatas, think how wonderful the world would be! Everyone smiling all the time! Wow... thats really gay isnt it?

suprmn91 02-26-2009 08:27 PM

I drive a lot for work and needed a reliable econocar. I looked into the Smart. I bought a Honda Fit and despite what the sticker says I get 38-47mpg's out of it when I drive it right. The Smart offers little for the money and can't/shouldn't compete against a sensible alternative like the Fit, but like people are saying it's all about the cool factor. I have to admit the Smart Roadster in Europe looks nice and goes fast when fitted with a twin turbo v6....but we'll never get something cool like that over here.

Exactly why I like it so much.....
That combined with the right tire and wheel combo, we would have a driving example of the "Toony" cars from the first page. Styling wise, I'd rock it with a cage as well. ;)

NA6C-Guy 02-27-2009 01:32 AM

Looks like a deep freezer on wheels. Probably drives like one too.

I just cant wait for the fancy Swatch made Urkel mobile to take a dump with electrical issues. It is Mercedes after all. I wouldnt wish a Mercedes upon my worst enemy. Biggest pile of shit and money pit Ive ever driven was an '02 C320, constant problems. I got arguments towards my car from my freind and his fiance today, trying to agrue my car was no more practical, and that the Smart has plenty of room and pep... what the fuck ever. The "trunk" is maybe a foot deep, if that, and no storage anywhere else besides the floor board. Makes the Miata look like an SUV. They just wont accept that its completely pointless to own and they only got it to be trendy and for the shock value. Its pissing me off really badly, cause neither of them are car people at all and neither know wtf they are talking about, and I do.

So let’s get serious: The worlds most sold “car” is the Ford F150. Check it out if you must, but it is. How many do you see in Rome? Not so many.

The Smart has sold quite well in central Europe. You hardly ever see them here in Sweden, because we have SPACE like few other European countries and we do not need them. But in central European crowded cities with narrow roads, a possible top speed of 40km/h, gas prices the equals to ~$6.5/gallon and a permanent lack of parking space, the Smart have sold well. Because for the market, it is a good product. Of course it is useless in Alabama! About as useless as a Ford F150 in central Milan actually. It doesn’t make it a bad product or a bad car... (but it does make your co-worker a tool).

Btw: My Italian buddy I got to know while living in Milano ownes a +400HP 300ZX … and a Smart as a daily driver.

NA6C-Guy 02-27-2009 04:52 AM

AHHH! I cant stop thinking about it. Im obsessed with hating this car. Every hour it pops in my head and I flail around like a crazy person. Like a 5 year old throwing a fit in a candy store. I fucking hate the SMART CAR! It embodies everything I hate. Yuppies, hippies, trendy fuckers, smug faced stuck up wanna be high class bastards. The only thing that could possibly infuriate me more would be an army of mimes and clowns in my yard at 4am honking horns and playing circus music while Im trying to sleep. Perhaps I will snap tomarrow and they will come out of work (we all work together) and I will be standing by their car, leaning against a tree smoking a cigar (dont smoke) with a empty gas can, while the car BURNS!!!!! :firedevil BURN BABY BURN!!!!!

You know what I meant man, it's supposed to be a cheap car to operate, why make 91+ octane gas a requirement?? If it was sporty at all it would be a different story. Both of my cars use premium, but they're both turbo 4-cylinders.

dont get too hung up on miles per gallon. there's also tons of pollutants to measure. perhaps the smart emits less than other cars with equal gas mileage...

I would rather buy a Honda Fit Sport with the 5spd. You get more bang for the buck and then some.

Really close to the same gas mileage- 4 mpg less per gallon
Seats 4
I can haul stuff in it.
Its a Honda
Same cost, if not cheaper.
More fun to drive
More power
Looks Better
Did I mention it looks better?
Runs on 87
