Well Pro/E just crashed on me for the third time today. So it is time to rant.

For something so useful and so enjoyable it can really be a pain in the ***. I have a love/hate relationship with this software. Right now I am producing some great looking ray trace renderings of something I am developing for NASA (sorry I cannot share the details yet). It is all fun and games right up until the rendering engine crashes (Pro/PHOTORENDER). I also love it when the program spontaneously decides to change the color or reflectivity of a surface without any interaction on my part.

I really wish I could go back to Solidworks. But alas it is not my decision alone. For now, my credo is save my work and save it often.

I don't personally use Pro/E but I do have to support it where I work. I've been owned by Pro/E on a number of occasions. The latest problem to plague me was random crashing (as reported by users). Randomly it would crash with out any indication of what happened. Turned out to be an issue with Mechanica, if the user running (this is under XP) was not part of the local Admin group it would do this.

But ya, I've has some real ******* battles with Pro/E over the past 5 or 6 years ... so I feel your pain.

That's funny because solidworks/mastercam was crashing my computer earlier, and I was wishing I was back with Pro-E.

The 32 bit computer I use at work sucks horribly compared to the new 64 bit ones that the senior designers have. They have 3 times the ram and processor and so when I try to combine two huge assemblies that I have already gone through and suppressed mass amounts of tooling ad **** I don't need I become frustrated as well when Solidworks crashes. Busts my ***** consistently and kills my productivity.
So forget that garbage. I want a better computer and designers that make more sub assemblies instead of just one huge assembly, ******.

my favorite pro/e trick is opening a drawing and then closing it (your working area is still black) and double click on the work area. instant crash. wat.

I miss solidworks. Having worked for years in both, it's so much nicer for 99% of the work I've done. Pro/E is a throwback piece of BS.

Yeah I agree. I have used both and the Solidworks interface is much better hands-down. I used Pro/E from 1995 until 2002, then Solidworks from 2002-2006, and then Pro/E again after that. The transition from Pro/E> to> Solidworks was a lot easier than the Solidworks> back to> Pro/E transition.

I was also a Pro/E admin during the first period of usage and it was a real PIA. When I was using version 16, before it was ported over to PCs, I was running it on a Sun Sparc station. It took two very good Unix gurus two days to install it on the computer, which is ridiculous. The PC ported version was also a PIA.
