I haz a new OTM

Drove 8 hours round trip yesterday and got my first new car, a 2010 Jetta SportWagen TDi! Unlike my other OTM (05 Neon SRT4) it's comfortable on the highway and gets stellar mileage. It's white outside with "cornsilk" (light tan) and black interior. Ought to stay cooler than black-on-black in the summer heat.

First project is to remove the tacky pinstripe down both sides.

SKMetalworks 02-07-2010 10:47 AM

pics or ban!

And since our apartment complex thinks everyone only needs one car, here's where the Miata parks...

Nice, wagons are awesome.

kotomile 02-07-2010 10:29 PM

Thanks, I'm liking it. Gotten 42 mpg so far, not too shabby when you consider that's mixed city/highway.

Played around with photoshop some...

Yay for turbodiesels!

Eadohcturbo 02-08-2010 12:54 AM

nice choice in colors.

Turbo_4 02-08-2010 01:02 AM

I thought VW was pretty high on the unreliable side, or is that just the 1.8t?

johnwag 02-08-2010 01:10 AM

TDI engine is awesome. Everything else around it is junk.

adamhershner 02-08-2010 02:09 AM

MKVI's are damn good looking... much better than MKV"s... Nice pickup!

NA6C-Guy 02-08-2010 03:34 AM

Any reason you went with the wagon over any of the other TDi models? Looks good, but I'm not much of a wagon fan. For sure DO remove that pin stripe. I think with some wheels and a 1'' drop it would look pretty killer. Not sure if you plan to do anything on the suspension to your daily driver wagon though. (I would).

I do like the styling of the newer models more than any of the last 10-15 years though. I want a blue Scirocco!!! Can see some of that Audi styling sticking out.

:jerkit::drool:

I'll quit shitting up your thread with pictures now.

How can you not like a wagon? Wagons = teh bomb. Great car, great choice. Looks great! :D

saint_foo 02-08-2010 10:23 AM

Beeyootiful wagon!

BTW, what the hell is OTM?

Manual to boot. I love those things. Nice find.

What he said.

Just trade away from the car while still under warranty :p

kotomile 02-08-2010 09:00 PM

Thanks all, and thanks for the votes of confidence, John and Splitime...lol.

I got a wagon because we're about to have another daughter, and the wagon more easily hauls two strollers and other related cargo. It's already come very much in handy; the wife brought home 4 large boxes from the post office today (essentials we shipped to ourselves) and is bringing home a table and 4 chairs as we speak. All the while getting better mileage than most economy cars.

As for the unreliability, we'll see. I'm not going to jinx it, but my brother-in-law (the same one who I've loaned the Miata to when I've gone to Kuwait and California and other foreign countries) is an experienced VW tech. I know, he's not here with me and I can't just tote him along with me, but he's diagnosed several things over the phone and been dead-on each time.

Thanks, it's cold now but I'm planning ahead for when it's hotter. I would have loved black...except in the summer, lol.

Thanks, I like the facelift the 2010s got.

The hairdryer came in the boxes we got today, w00t! The pinstripe is doomed. If anything, for suspension, it would have to be VERY mild.

Thanks, it's easy to find 'em when they're new, lol. I got it through USAA so the price was good.

TurboTim 02-08-2010 10:17 PM

very very nice. Wagons FTMFW. I've seen some seriously sick TDI's on youtube. Like 2387932874 ftlbs at 500rpm.

kotomile 02-09-2010 09:45 PM

I need to get as good at fiberglass as rharris.. I have some great aero ideas but I don't want to install any finished product that looks ghetto. The factory seems to have done a pretty good job with the underbody, but there's room for improvement on the body.

kotomile 02-10-2010 10:21 PM

Since you're all dying to know, I'm toying with filling in some spots on the bumper with removeable plugs, like in the recess where fog lights would be. Maybe mooneyes-type wheel covers for trips...

I'd really like to see if 60 mpg is possible.

Update: 30k miles and going strong. No issues, just routine maintenance so far. Dealer did a campaign involving new mapping for the O2 sensors.

And remember when I said I'm glad I didn't get black-on-black? Well, guess what my dad went and got...

...and he lives in Florida. He also got the full-length sunroof, bigger wheel package, and DSG.

Before we got our CPO A3, we test drove the Jetta wagons. The interiors are really nicely done for the most part, but my wife just couldn't warm up to the rear half of the profile and I don't think the TDIs were available when we were shopping.

If the Jettas are like the A3s, your dad will learn to hate the perforated shade for the double sunroof. I have no idea why they didn't offer a solid panel, but it definitely seems to add to the interior temp on a sunny day. Tint is a must with all that glass.

We love the combination of function and practicality (including parking) of ours and will definitely test drive a newer A3 TDI if we don't move up to something with some towing capacity.

18psi 06-30-2011 11:02 AM

So whats a realistic city mpg on these bad boys that you've observed?
I've seen people claim some really high numbers, and others (including the magazines testing them) claim much lower though still good numbers.

What is YOUR honest feedback on that?

kotomile 06-30-2011 02:41 PM

City - difficult to get it below 33, but it really shines on the highway. 46 is the norm with 32 psi in the tires, 48 with 35 psi (at around 75 mph). With the big, stupid luggage bag we somehow acquired sitting on the roof it drops to 42.

This is why I bought a hitch-mount bike rack for it instead of a roof rack. :D

I think my dad has plans to tint at least the sunroof portion, FWIW Jack. It's just a big sun-absorbing greenhouse...

The range/mileage/service interval is awesome. We do a good bit of highway driving (wife did NC-GA-NC-MD-NC-GA this past week, for example) so it's nice to have something economical yet big enough to put things in. She put a recliner in the back of it for MD-NC.
