Run mac osx on pc based hardware?

I am thinking of selling my macbook and having my friend build me a desktop, and have been considering trying this hackintosh thing. I really love the way the mac os is setup and love the video editing programs as well.

Would love to have a faster mac for cheaper.

Has anyone done this, how does it run?

I'm running osx of a msi wind as I type this. Its also my tuning computer that dual boots with a copy of winxp lite for tuning.

The msi wind runs osx flawlessly.

i run osx on both my macbook pro and my g5 dual xeon tower
but i did run osx86 on dell mini 9 and dell desktop about a year ago; and i built a dedicated box for osx86 back when it just came out in '07 i think

to answer your question - macs are actually NOT as expensive as they seem. for all the hardware that you are getting its REALLY worth it. if you build one yourself you will probably end up saving $200 and you would still need to **** for at least a full day to get everything working properly.

I've built 2 hackintosh desktops, one for my brother to run FCS2 and just recently I decided to install it on my desktop. Depending on what motherboard/components you have you may not get all the functionality out of it (external ports/onboard sound doesn't work, etc..) but otherwise it works fairly well. I still have issues getting Time Machine to work however, but that's not a big deal.

Try iPC for your install disk it installs Leopard 10.5.6 on your machine and has a fair amount of options/drivers for your install.

I plan on doing this fairly soon for the next computer I build in a couple of weeks. Really looking forward to it, just need to spend some time making sure I get all the most compatible parts.

Check out the forums at InsanelyMac. They will have all the information you will need. I have been runnning a hackintosh since last December. It works great and is a good bit faster then my macbook. The biggest thing is to make sure the hardware you get is supported.
