Good road tires provide a little bit of feedback. You can feel the forces build up before they let go and then they'll slide more predictably. It's not like you're trying to get them to slide though. More just recognizing how much grip is available.

Yesterday's race report from Matrix:
Stackhouse Burger:
I ordered it rare and it was over-well-done, kind of pissed. Might not ever eat there again, many other problems.
Santa Fe Happy Camper:
Nice glow to the yellow color, impressive. 1/2" white head. Aroma hits those nice dry hop aromas imparting some pine forest.
Taste rocks around 60 ibu, still has the hop mouthfeel and bitterness. This was really one of the first very good canned ipas. It really lends itself to camping. Only thing to watch out for are the dates on this one. When fresh, its one of those very good regional ipas in the best possible format at an affordable price out there.
Ninkasi Vanilla Oatis:
A delicious oatmeal stout with just enough hops to balance the copious quantities of dark roasted malts, oatmeal for a creamy smooth drinkability, and whole vanilla beans for a rich complexity. To achieve this higher level of decadence, we added in whole vanilla beans to the final stage of fermentation - the same process we use to dry hop a beer.
The Race:
I lost but looked pro, a general success.

Top elevation is not over 14k, not even close, but uphill probably 40% is mandatory hike-a-bike. I don't have any good downhill footage, but the downhill was spectacular.
No video of the descent, sorry. Spent about 40% of the time uphill off bike due to terrain obstacles and/or sheer steepness. I would say once it started it averaged 20% grade. 20% with obstacles is tough.
A++ would ride again. It's an out and back, 22k to the Hut. We only managed the first 5.5k, as it's over an hour from the house and we had to be back before school let the young'uns out, so we were severely time constrained.

An old cycling buddy of mine spends about half the year in NZ. He does every big MTB ride, race thing he can find. He just did some event that crosses the entire country, unsupported, bike packing the whole way. I wonder if he has done the Te Iringa

After a 20K TT a few weeks ago. Monsoon the night before, sand and puddles all over the course. Set my PR at 27:37. Looks like I did a mountain bike race. I have an aero jacket (disc cover) for the rear wheel, just building a new set of 88mm clinchers to put them on.
Bar set up still not quite right. Moving pads from current spot behind the bar to ahead of the bar to better clear my knees out of the saddle. 55/42 x 11/23 for this flat course.

Cape Reinga
nice trail I found while at Cape Reinga, the northernmost part of the North Island. In the second image you can just see the crazy wave interactions of the Tasman Sea meeting the Pacific. Waves breaking out in the middle of the ocean even on a calm day.
Edit: 1) because photo url additions are weird now, the photo is now put inline into the edit post window instead of the text, which is kind of dumb, and 2) you can just see the lighthouse in the first pic on the shoulder of the point.
