Seriusly what makes us bash our heads into the wall while we school people who do not want to learn? Are we massakists or what.

My theory is that maybe there will be one kid or old motherfucker we reach who actualy learns and understands something we teach them. And so long as that happens it is worth it. The epiphany of the newb is a wonderfull thing.

For me, there are two reasons.

1: I believe that if even one out of ten annoying newbs is actually able to be reached, reasoned with, and made to learn, then it's worth the hassle. Sort of a "sum total of human achievement" sort of thing.

2: If we simply shun every single new user who shows up, then the forum will die a slow death by attrition.

As a newb, I appreciate the efforts of those that have tried. Unfortunately, as popular as this car is, it would seem that you might get an inordinate number of dumbasses; such is the price of success.

I've been an active 'teacher' on my local VW board for at least 7 years now, and honestly I believe that I am often not heard, even thought I have driven and worked on VWs for 20 years. More times than not, they will do it wrong, and wonder why. I don't berate them, and I try not to embarrass them, I just try to remember that everyone is doing what they can to just survive this shitty world. Anger inhibits learning, but that does not mean it is easy not to be.

I mean personally this was the first car I had ever modified to the extent I have and I was/am(to a lesser extent) was completely dumb. Thankfully with lots of time and reading I'd say I could help someone with a good majority of the things i've learned.

I'll have to try and find that tonight when I get home... Apart from the cumbersome hose routing involved, is this method acceptable as compared to the more common tap-the-pan method? Is this fitting on the suction side of the pump or does it drain into the pan?

A few playful jabs and a bit of sarcasm can be quite instructive as a teaching tool. The vehicle and part specific information is what I struggle with, but I learn a little more about the Miata every day. I'd hate to be clueless regarding basic engine construction and operating theory as well. I don't know how some of these guys keep from destroying everything they touch.

It reminds me of a car vs. motorcycle accident on the Florida turnpike. I was the second person on scene. As the man and woman from the motorcycle lay in the roadway I tried to determine their obvious injuries to render aid. As a few more motorists showed up, a nicely dressed, well spoken woman began speaking to the injured pair. I told her the woman had a broken ankle, so the nicely dressed woman grabbed the injured female's foot and starts pushing it upwards toward the knee. The injured female screams and I yell "What are you doing?" She replied, "I'm trying to pop it back in joint." I yelled, "Get the fuck away from her!" I was amazed. I just assumed that everybody has a basic understanding of human anatomy.

I feel similarly stunned when talking with people who have no idea how the basic systems in their automobiles function. I'll give a chick a pass on that, but not a dude, and certainly not a guy who purports to be an enthusiast.

Even my wife can name the four strokes of a four stroke internal combustion engine.
