I don't like them at all.
But maybe I'll change my mind if you're still raving about it after a year of ownership or something. |

I would get an $8k 2003 BMW 540i 6sp M-suspension like mine! The money saved buys a lot of gas!!!! Heck, the monthly money saved on interest payments, depreciation, and insurance payments, more than pays for its gas!

True that you could buy something used for much cheaper and with worse gas mileage and the savings would pay for A LOT OF GAS
i recommend a porsche cayenne s. they are very fast. |
Or a Gumpert Apollo
|
Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR, also very fast.

35K is getting close to 2012 STI money and sorry but the mini clubman is ugly as hell.
What about Hyundai Genesis sedan, I think the new 3.8 puts out close to 350hp and is 35K |
35k for a mini ------- pooper is just ridiculous.
|
Seriously Matt, you're too intelligent to buy new. I know that minis actually depreciate very slowly, but still, surely you could wait a year and pay a couple thousand less.
For 35K, seriously, what I would get is this: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...ingId=81087707 Woops that's too much FRAKKEING GLORY and 15K more. That car. So badass. Will be ditching my subie for that in 2 years. Here you go. This one is under budget and even has NAWWWSSZZZ http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...ingId=73298699 Holy frakk you could prob get that off the lot for $20K. OK here is something more realistic. http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...ingId=79896748 Woops that's a SICK MALLET EDITION FOR 20K Ok here is a regular one http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...ingId=78261530 |

2013 Fusion with ecobewst? Supposed to get over 40mpg hwy and still have plenty power. I walk 5 min to work though, so what do i know...
If i didnt have my first gen insight back in the usa and were coming home permanently the new fusion would be at the top of my list. With the 2.0l ecoboost engine of course. |

Out of the 4 cars shown the clubman is the clear winner though. |
my phone failed me today.
i wrote something like the ctv-s is 50,000 and makes 4mpg, not anything y8s would consider...or anyone of reasonable human being with a budget and a high mpg goal. |
If I didn't have a penis and wanted a hybrid sedan I may consider the 2006-2007 Accord and Altima hybrids. <$15k, not slow like all other hybrids, decent chassis dynamics and will satisfy holier-than-though enviro-weenie colleagues.

EDIT: That CX-5 looks interesting. Time to google it. I am anti-Mini but best of luck with your new bigMini, I'm sure you'll love it while under warranty. |
first off, not using gas is not the same as having money for gas. high MPG is not about what I spend on gas. it's about pumping our precious terrirost-sourced hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.
also I just don't like the VW stuff. everyone posted that jetta wagon with the big fat round ass and I think it's fugly. and the fords are yawn fests. the focus is too small and too shitty. and as far as the cost of the mini and buying new, our current cars were bought new. one in 1998 and one in 2001. I dont mind financing a new car. |
Early CTS-V would me my choice. You only live once, don't f--- it up.
|
Tsx.
|
I love my wife's CX-7 for a family car, but it blows on mpg's...like 19. That's full size pickup truck fuel mileage, not crossover fuel mileage.
A buddy of mine who made fun of my miata for being gay, just sold his LS1 camaro and bought a chevy Sonic to be more "fuel friendly". Who's gay now? |
Like said before I dig the Mini. At least with that car you get what you pay for.

Have you looked at Mini's reliability ratings? They are usually bottom of the barrel. Worst of the worst. One lady I work with had a base cooper and it fell apart after 60k miles. She really loved the car but the maintenance cost after the warranty expired were getting too much for her, she now has a Fit.
My vote is to wait for the CX-5. It just got finished with the EPA testing, rated at 36mpg highway for the 6mt FWD version. That's crazy for a small suv. Also, the CR-V is a heck of a good car for people in your situation. We had an '08 for two years. At first I hated and despised it, after two years I was thoroughly impressed. The newest version gets even better mpg, not as good as the CX-5 though. I don't doubt the MINI is the best of the four you listed, but I would be very leery of the reliability (especially if you are the kind of person to keep a new car for 14 years, which it sounds like you are) and the real world fuel economy. Good luck either way |
friends girl had an 04 Mini S.
Was a raging piece of ----, and right around 60k everything just started failing. The cluster/speedo/whatever it was in the middle looked like a christmas tree: lights upon warning lights. After spending more time in the shop vs driving, the thing went up for sale and he was happy to get half of what he paid for it originally. but its coo, y8s knows best lolz |

Yes. A ton of them.
Very very few of them are euro cars though. Call me close minded and obtuse, but when you've wrenched on as many failaids cars as I have, you start to differentiate between pretty cars that sound good on paper vs ones that actually work. Said buddy's girl now drives a Lexus IS300. Never had 1 single issue with it yet. |

Don't get me wrong. I'd have loved to find a Lexus that met the criteria for gas mileage, price, and size. They just don't have what I need. If the IS had just a few more em pee jeez, I'd have driven one on saturday.

You forget. The EPA ratings are still a bit off. They don't do a good job with boosted cars because they're tuned so rich from the factory.
|
Rear facing seat is tight in a Forester XT, but that didn't stop me...
Does the mini really get that good of MPG? Looks like on fuelly.com the average is about 25mpg for the model you're looking at. |

Unfortunately Fuelly doesn't break the countryman down into turbo / non turbo / awd segments, but lumps them all together. And fuelecomony.gov doesn't have any user data yet. Inside Line saw a wide variation in monthly averages between 16.9 and 33.6 with a cumulative average of about 25.2. It's as good as any of their non-hybrid long termers except for the Fiat 500, Mazda 3, and Jetta TDI and you know how I feel about that one. There's also this "sport" button that you can press to remap the throttle... if I can just leave that off... |
Just pull the button out.
I also can't believe the Mini has more space than a TSX or Mazda 3. |
Check out the Car and Driver or Motor Trend observed fuel economy, they drive w/ a lead foot I'm sure, so I'd take that into account.

I also can't believe the Mini has more space than a TSX or Mazda 3. I didn't look at the TSX but I have a friend with one. The problem most of these awesome cars have is with rear-facing infant seats. Any car that has reclined front seats totally screws up the fit of the seat. It doesn't matter what the front + rear legroom numbers are if the top of the front seats is over your knees--the infant seat will never fit. The countryman is has a more upright seating position and it makes all the difference. Plus I just like the thing. No amount of logic can change that. |

It was constantly some new random weird part. Like passenger seat decided it didn't want to stand "erect" anymore. guess the gears or whatever inside took a dump, so it was always reclined. then the "brake" light came on, and despite replacing the pads, fluid, and sensors it was still on. Ended up being the whole abs unit or something like that. Then the clutch went out, which was a PAIN to replace and basicaly the whole front end had to come off to do it (I am NOT exaggerating this part either). I mean I'm sure you're doing your research and all, just sayin be extra careful and do extra research and know what you're getting into. She bought it for 14 in I think 07. Sold it for 7 last year. |

I dunno how old his kids were when he got them, but Tom (BRGracer) has/had 2 TSXs and has 2 boys. Pretty sure they both did double duty as commuting and family vehicles.
|
IIRC he sold one and now rocks an e30 325i and TSX and maybe something else. but has 3 kids now, one under a year old.
|
Why is it that everyone buys cars that are much more expensive than mine. All my friends and associates make less than me but my cars cost like 1/3-1/4th what theirs do.
Please explain why I should not buy a new M3 or Audi S5 or Chevy Cruze or M1 or oh oh oh that diesel bmw thing or cadillac cts-v? |
Spotted a very nice condition white E30 325ix on my way in to work this morning. Wanted it badly.

everytime i see a v70R I need to have it.

My GF and I were discussing my car problem this weekend. She said that if I ever struck it rich or won the lotto, she knows I'd be the idiot with a bunch of wagons with Corvette engines, old Miatas, and old Civics. She would buy a purple Wrangler. She also said I'd be the guy with a $100k tow rig full of $1500 cars. This is love. |
Your one lucky lady tray.

Welcome to (future) Mini ownership. I picked my wife up an '08 'vert S for Xmas. And because I'm such a sucker for headaches and anguish, it's used and non CPO. I can't see anything under the hood that would be a daunting task to fix.
Reliability, shmeliability. It's mt.net. We all drive cars that have issues ALL THE TIME! Granted they aren't 35Gs, but he'll have full coverage under warranty for quite some time. |
I'll probably end up with a WRX hatch. I'm really drawn to wagons, but I really want something with real AWD and versatility that drives like a smaller car.
I'd pimp a regular S60R, but I dunno, something about having the wagon just makes it better...not that I've ever used my rear seat in my DD for anything...I think you sat in it once Hustler...probably the first person in 10 years. and my trunk is full of junk form my last office cause I was too lazy to unload it. |

Edit, oh yeah the backseat, inspecific to car type. I had a wagon for a while and always left the back-seat down. That's the way to roll, my GF's Cherokee is the same way. |
Too bad. They used to be all over craigslist a year or two ago, cheap too.

This is for frontal and offset impacts, which are statistically more likely than severe rear impacts. Rear facing seats would probably be safer for adults too if they didn't make it so difficult to drive the car.
