I'm about to do a track day at 144k miles
tell me everything will be ok, and I'll be able to drive it home after 5 sessions. :x:
Everything will be ok and you will be able to drive home. Bed your pads before you go and tell us how it goes, should be awesome. If there is something that is gonna go wrong, hopefully it doesn't happen until you get back.
A lot could go wrong, you've got to be aware of that before you take it on the track. I'm of the opinion that if you can't afford to write the car off on the track you should consider something less risky.
Mechanically you'll probably be fine. I'd make sure your cooling system is in tip top shape. Brakes two. These will probably take the most punishment. |
If you are really worried rent a U-Haul trailer and a truck or find out where the nearest U-Haul is to the track.
I am trailering the car. I have a daily driver, I just don't want to blow anything up, because it will be a major pain in the ass. I'm swapping in a 1.8 soon anyway.
Anyone else track a high mileage car? |

I'll be tracking my car hopefully this summer as well. Luckly for me, I'm picking up a 1.8 motor out of a 95 on Friday that only has 31,000 miles on it for $750.
I'm building up my car for hardcore track use. 127k, nearly 128k on the motor right now and it will be turbo in a couple of months. 7000 miles on the TB/WP, so I'm not at all worried. I still need to do a compression/leakdown test.
you'll be fine.
remember if the brakes go, pump them bitches, then try the e-brake. watch your gauge dont overdrive |

Shit son that ain't high mileage.
You should be just fine. I ran my car out there several times in stock form without any issue. I wasn't quite as high mileage, but with still, I think you will be ok. Wish I could go with ya, unfortunately my car still isn't together...

dude I do track days with 194k (na). soon I'll be doing at least one 195k turbo :P
You don't have a turbo, right? If so, you'll be just fine.
Now i just have to change the oil with the suicide jack in the parking lot of my hotel. hehe
should I be worried about a slightly slipply clutch? It doesn't slip in aggressive driving, but if I were to launch the car, it would probably slip. I plan on driving conservatively.
how badly am I going to slide all over the place with shitty kumho 711's?

Good luck man... keep us updated.
If you can, get someone with skilz to ride with you. This would be the best possible thing to do. Ask the organizers if they have any volunteer instructors that could ride along. You'll learn a bunch. Track is a whole different enchilada than road.
Don't be afraid to pit before your session is over if the brakes or tires get too hot and squirrelly. Remember smooth is fast, do all your braking in a straight line, no abrupt changes. |
That's a good idea. It's also tremendously cool to ride along with someone else. And just watch what they do. I find that every bit as exciting, and not as stressful.
Ride alongs are great. Last track day I did I got to ride in an original shelby cobra. The real deal, not a kit car. Guy has owned it since 1970. Pretty cool seeing an old guy (retired and in his late 60's) with a piece of history still willing to go out an have fun driving it.
I would not hesitate man. Just do the regular maintenance prior like bleeding your brakes and clutch, changing your oil, checking your timing (id go with 10* and not higher personally), and just generally making sure everything is buttoned down. If you have a heater still, turn it on if you start overheating. I cant see any reason why the motor would be a problem other than having slightly less power than a newer one.
what tire pressures should I start with? Its going to be a miserable 48* high that day.
I guess start with the suggest pressures and adjust from there? thats what I would try, anyone else?
I'd start with them at the max operating pressure. They are going to have floppy sidewalls and want to roll over on you. From the adjust up till no roll over is detected. I wouldn't go too crazy, you wouldn't want to have a blow out. Pay attention to how hot the tires are getting.
I wouldn't start at max. By the end of the 1st session you'll be 10 to 15 lbs over. The tires get hot and the air expands a bunch. Start maybe 5 to 10 lbs under max to be safe. Take a gauge with you and check right after pitting. Drop them back to max or just under then.
