so ya ... i was helping my friend change out his clutch on his S2000, and managed to crack the bellhousing on the transmission. The fucker was stuck on a dowel pin near the top. Theres a used tranny 20 miles away for $750 ...

I feel totally responsible because im the guy who supposedly sorta knows what he is doing and my buddy doesnt know anything about working on cars. What a humbling fucking night. oh ya 7 hours of work and the tranny is still sitting on a jack and my buddy doesnt know that the bell housing cracked, didnt have the heart to say it.

Worst feeling in the world when you fuck up somebodys car, I knew better than to keep prying ...

magnamx-5 03-03-2007 07:53 AM

that is why i have whoever owns the car do any prying etc if they breack it you dont feel responsible remember as the person who knows what they are doing you should be pointing your finger and helping with minor arangements so the next time you do the job both of you know what you are doing. Just my 2 cents. how bad is the bell housing cracked? is it salvagable, fully warped? detials man maybe you aren't up shit creek yet.

shuiend 03-03-2007 09:01 AM

Wow that sucks. Now you got me scared of doing the transmision on my friends S2k. We will be doing it probally mid summer. Now I know not to pry on anything.

Mach929 03-03-2007 09:08 AM

yeah i hate working on other peoples cars, one reason not to become a tech

displacementreplacement 03-03-2007 10:28 AM

Find a good heli-arc welder and fix it!

akaryrye 03-03-2007 11:57 AM

The crack is circular i outlined where the crack developed around a siezed stud

Mach929 03-03-2007 04:30 PM

weld it

TwoScoopsofHooah 03-03-2007 04:58 PM

welding it would be the the cheapest option but what does your friend say bout it...Telling him now would beat him finding out down the road...it sounds lame but honesty is the best policy.

magnamx-5 03-03-2007 05:51 PM

dude that doesn't seem like it would be that bad it isnt a structural or sealing part
just put it together agian

ApexOnYou 03-03-2007 09:46 PM

Get it welded. Bring it to a machine fab shop, im sure someone would be willing to do it on their lunch for cash.

getsidewaysd1 03-03-2007 11:09 PM

That sucks man. I know how you feel. When I was 16, I was helping my buddy change his breaks on his Integra and didnt realize I had put the jack stand under his floorboard. So, as I'm shure you guessed, when I let the jack down, the jack stand went right through the fucking car. I tried playing it off like nothing had happened which lasted a whole 10seconds. Luckly for me my dad pulled in driveway comming home from work and lucky for me he had a welder. Problem got fixed and everything was all good. Except now I get nervious whenever I put a jackstand under my or anyone elses car.

Racer46 03-03-2007 11:11 PM

I've put an MG transmission back together with JB Weld. It held until the new owner ran it into a light poll.

It looks like the bell housing is replacable. If welding is not possible I would try getting just that part.

turbopezz 03-03-2007 11:38 PM

yea, just weld or replace the bellhousing

Philip 03-04-2007 12:54 AM

I'd ignore it. It'll hold.

hustler 03-04-2007 02:08 PM

you can't tig that shit?

airbrush1 03-04-2007 02:19 PM

yeah, just weld or rplace the bellhousing.... no biggie!

I would talk to him about it for sure. How pissed can the dude get? You're working on his car... (for free, right?)

did you crack it or was it already cracked and thats why it wouldn't come off? :) Talk to your friend. Weigh your options. If your doing the work its not really your fault. my friend shattered my finish panel helping me remove it...I didn't ask him to pay for it.

akaryrye 03-05-2007 01:26 AM

its been a long weekend, but i got it fixed up right. Found a professional tig welder who Heli-arc'd it back together for a shop rate of $90/hr since it was on call. Friend payed the bill and the tranny is now stronger than before. The guy did an awesome job. He grinded the casting down and filled with weld, then wherever the silica bubbles formed, he welded again. Made 3 passes in all. I was pretty stressed for a bit though :)

Apparantly this guy has welded sprint cars as well as web stiffening on engine blocks and transmissions.

adbradley 03-05-2007 09:28 AM

i love when things all work out

FTW!

i just broke a windshield washer nozzle on my bad's bimmer, i gotta fix that.

airbrush1 03-05-2007 12:06 PM

BMW washer nozzles are brittle pieces of shit! I break at least one no matter how careful I am every time I have to disassemble a bimmer hood for paint...

DammitBeavis 03-05-2007 05:05 PM

I just helped a friend un-pimp an '02 WRX he just bought.

Somebody had bought all kinds of high dollar stuff for it, but the installation was terrible. It had a $3000 suspension system, but was slammed so low that it was on the bumpstops the whole time. It had some nice headers and a huge 3" exhaust system, but right after the downpipe it had been necked down for a 2.5" flange, then back to 3" again. All kinds of controllers and timers and gauges inside, but the wiring was horrible. The high-beams and foglights were inoperable. It was sickening. Even the EGT sensor was sticking out of the header at such an angle that it hits the engine cradle. To top it all off, the huge atmospheric BOV makes it die frequently too. Why would someone do that to a car?

Fortunately he got a smokin deal on it, so we spent a couple days un-f**k'ing it. Everytime I started to do something where I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, I called him over and handed him the tools.

clshrckr 03-05-2007 05:12 PM

jb weld is holding together my crankshaft on my sentra 60k+ and still good lol

Just get it TIG welded. It will be fine.

Oops just read that you did... I TIG'd my 6 speed years ago myself. Still holding up after punching flywheel dowels through it.

funny thing was the nozzle itself just gave way before the vacuum line pulled off. I mean all i was doing was pulling straight, and the thing just snapped in half.

anywhos, congrats on fixing the problem.
