installing game on vista

Gf has this antique PC game from like 10 years ago, and Im trying to install it on Vista. Its telling me "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." So I went to the default programs thing and to the set associations window. The file is _ins0432._mp. Been through the list several times and I see no ._mp. Any suggestions? I dont have much experience with Vista, and I hate it.

Compatibility mode is the winner. The other option is to run a virtual machine on your PC with a copy of windows XP and run in win95 compatibility mode. I think they removed the 95 compatibility mode in vista.

By "antique", was this DOS or early Windows?

If DOS, get DosBox. It's free, it works, 'nuff said.

If Windows, download Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. Also free. Once running, use your old Win95 / Win98 CD-ROM to format and create a virtual PC running that operating system, and run the game out of that.

Redneck Rampage FTW!

Saml01 03-19-2009 09:29 AM

Take a screenshot of the error.

I bet its just complaining the file is missing and has a stupid way of saying it.

We need to stand up a duke nukem or old school quake server. :)

The ._mp file is "InstallShield" (but old school version). I am assuming its _ins0432._mp.exe? Screen cap the directory on the CD, and the error message.

icantthink4155 03-19-2009 12:39 PM

It says "_ins0432._mp" and nothing else. The error message is exactly how I quoted it.

Whats this game on? Install disk or just in a folder?

Roger Wilco FTW! While I was laid up with the broken foot, I played through SQ1-4, and man, that took me back. Probably been 15 years since I laid eyes on 'em before.

Seriously, stop killing yourself with Vista. Just install Virtual PC, and if you need a '98 disc, I've probably got one somewhere in a box.
