Intercooling your computer

Very interesting article for computer nerds. Apparently if you use liquid nitrogen you can overclock a 3ghz CPU to 7ghz. Other people in these pics fill their cases w/ cooking oil and whatnot. Take a look at the images. Edit: This second one has a turbo

I love their phase change coolers.... mini ac that people pay 1000% over cost

Loki047 09-20-2007 10:09 AM

PS that cooking oil is a bad idea. It holds alot of heat. IT can easily get up to 350 without a problem. I would have used alcolhol with a way to recapture it.

Cool

1275GT 09-20-2007 10:51 AM

cooler

Loki047 09-20-2007 11:10 AM

U should have posted the turbocharger one

How is it a bad idea if it works?

I know the guy who made that one. It's non-functional, just for looks. I mean the electric motor does spin the turbo but it doesn't cool that well.

Loki047 09-20-2007 11:33 AM

haha even if it did it would just end up heating the air up

It works but theres a flaw it in. THey are using the oil as a sink , the problem is that the temp of the sink can easily rise to a temp above desired. Where something with a lower evap point would guarantee temp of the sink.

once of the reasons people use oil for frying is its ability to hold so much residual heat (ontop of the fact that it is polar)

I wonder if you could intercool a PC-PRO....

akaryrye 09-20-2007 09:55 PM

damn ... that would be nuts

mazda/nissan 09-20-2007 10:02 PM

i prefer the pc's stashed away in freezers with dehumidifiers (spelling???) :bigtu:

hustler 09-20-2007 11:43 PM

pc-pro?

Her you wouldnt need a dehumifidifer with a freezer. If you had one it would counteract the freezer.

Loki047 09-21-2007 12:12 AM

yeah thats cause you open the door and continuly introduce moisture and then it freezes. Hence no humidity

If you start a freezer outside (when it was cold) and never opened it (and it had a perfect seal) it would never ice over

But the amount of oil they have vs the heat produced. They have enough that when disbursed through all of the oil it rests at a temp that is cool enough to vent off and keep the system running. Also people who OC shit from 3ghz to 7ghz are cheap. Olive Oil is cheap shit vs whateverelseyouuse.

marty_uiuc 09-21-2007 08:44 AM

that LN2 set-up is tits!

l

Whateverelse = Water = free

or Alcohol = Mouthwash = $1/gallon (dolla store)

Right but that sink isnt that big and its got a high secific heat. So run it for a long time and it just gets really hot doesnt shed the heat. The trick is the take advantage of the massive amount of heat in phase change, ie going from 211F to 212F with water.

I don't think that system is capable of shedding heat anywhere near as fast as it gains heat. Meaning, eventually you'll have to give it a break or it will start to cook instead of cool.

Why not just use regular DI water... it doesn't conduct so you could submerse the entire machine in the stuff.... technically.

Loki047 09-21-2007 09:54 AM

The only thing i can think of is the polarity of the liquid. So what if its gotta be nonpolar what could we use? Im thinking chicken blood and its free!

Braineack 09-21-2007 09:56 AM

why not stop being such nerd?!

Distilled water will still short a computer. It's only distilled until you expose it to the atmosphere.

hell no.

Loki047 09-21-2007 10:25 AM

yeah i know :( worth a try.

Newbsauce 09-21-2007 10:27 AM

The overclocked PC from 3ghz to 7ghz is not someone being cheap, it was an attempt to set some records. I mean shit.. if the parties involved were cheap they wouldn't exactly be using liquid nitrogen nor have build a nitrogen cooler setup.

DI = deionized... not distilled. distilled water still conducts.

I rember a vid of a computer fully submersed in warter or something like it..

Loki047 09-21-2007 10:19 PM

Im assuming they were specially sealed.
