It's hard to take good pictures of carbon fiber

so here are some shitty ones. I'm going to borrow an SLR and a human who knows how to use it later this week, but figured I'd share these now.

Sold my OEM top Wednesday for $1200, picked this up for $1300 on Thursday evening. C-West wet carbon top, 40lbs with OEM glass and seals. Fits pretty much like the OEM top did, keeps water out (tested that thoroughly this weekend). The rear latches are a little gross, still trying to figure out what I'm going to do about them.

Gives it a much more brash look than the car used to have, less sleeper more racecar. I was going to do a vented FRP hood and paint it black, but I think I'm going to stick with raw carbon and mabye do a trunk as well later on.

Ricer...

J/K, can I haz?

Whats the official weight on an OEM hardtop? I wouldn't rock a CF hardtop unless it met 2 criteria
1. It's appreciably lighter than OEM
2. It's painted

chriscar 11-03-2008 10:05 AM

Stock hardtop weight is 44.5 lbs.

Unpainted body parts are for ricers. Paint that shit. It looked good before.

KPLAFIN 11-03-2008 10:29 AM

A lot easier to get good shots in the sunlight FWIW.

jayc72 11-03-2008 10:51 AM

I like it. You couldn't pull it off with any color other than black.

y8s 11-03-2008 11:53 AM

turn off autofocus or focus on something that's not shiny but is at the same distance first (half button press) and with the button held half way, THEN take a pic of the car. the AF is picking up the reflection, not the top.

$90 point-and-shoot camera. fail. :(

ApexOnYou 11-03-2008 01:23 PM

I like the idea of a CF top but paint that shit!

Seriously though how much does it weigh?

should still work with the half-way button press. make and model please.

What are you going to do about the frankenstein bolts?

I'm planning on removing mine and sticking some longer bolts in with a fat washer and painting the head and washer black. One of many projects I haven't gotten around to.

cjernigan 11-03-2008 02:44 PM

Shoot some pics through a pair of polarized sunglasses rotated for max glare reduction :)
It works

bryantaylor 11-03-2008 08:48 PM

looks sick, i love some CF

Fireindc 11-03-2008 09:33 PM

I think it looks great. Black+CF is nice.

elesjuan 11-03-2008 09:40 PM

Sav you son of a . . . . . . .

I read that top is strong enough to support the weight of the car..

WTf? No more need for a roll bar? :giggle:

Savington 11-03-2008 11:24 PM

40lbs is what I was told, at least. Next time it's sunny and I have it off I'll throw it on a bathroom scale and see what it really weighs.

As far as color, IMO painting a $2000 carbon fiber top is heresy. ;)

elesjuan 11-03-2008 11:54 PM

Honestly, a top on any color car I'd keep it carbon. Black tops go very well on ANY color... just look at soft tops! On a lot of cars I like the carbon hood, top, and trunk lid.. I'd do it myself, but thats like 15 times the cost of my car.... :)

a carbon hard top will end up with someone following you home, and you awaking the next day with a free spot in the garage.

That's actually one of the reasons I keep the car registered in Mtn.View. I'm sure the plate number is online from old photos even though I remove it from all the new ones I take, but the address I keep the car at isn't the one it's registered at anyway.

I keep thinking about a Hagerty policy, though.

MotorSports Insurance

Patrick Lull quoted me $500/year for a $13,000 theft/weather/fire gap coverage over my standard comprehensive policy with state farm. It does not cover for collision, but everything else. Basically, insurance for a racecar, off the track. After what I went through with the VW disappearing one day, I'm happy to pay that for my miata. Hagerty would not provide coverage to me because I drive it more than 5k miles per year, and it goes on the track so they won't cover it period.

Just because its registered somewhere else doesn't mean someone can't follow you around.

Mymiataflys 11-04-2008 10:15 AM

increased theft posssibility was second thing to hit my brain, after thinking it looked good. I've always been surprised at the lack of news of people having hardtops stolen, what with the high value and ease of removal.

It happens. My '92 came with a hardtop and the dr. window was busted out of it when I got it...the hardtop had been stolen and recovered, that was the third time the top had been stolen (and recovered obviously) according to the PO. I don't leave my miata anywhere unattended for extended periods of time unless it's under lock and key in my garage.

Savington 11-04-2008 01:18 PM

Hagerty said they didn't have a mileage cap, but I had to be insured as primary on another car. They also didn't really like the rollbar. That $500/yr for the $13k theft/fire rider is exactly what I have been looking for, though. I don't really care if I wad it up since I'm just going to buy a shell and swap over, but those two scare the shit out of me. Do you remember if it covers being stolen from grocery store parking lots, or only if it's stolen from storage?
