83614 6-inch Boot - Irish Setter Work

"Gaucho Leather" is awesome. I like things I can rub down with mink oil. The uppers are super supportive and that's exactly what I need after my torn ligament shitshow earlier this year. They also immediately give my wardrobe like +5 to manliness. ;)

The soles are VERY stiff and its going to take some time to break in. They absolutely beat the shit out of my feet for the last couple of days. Of course, my feet are all soft and pampered with the desk job so part of that is going to be me adapting to wearing boots again as well. I really like the "Stars and Bars" tread pattern and sole, makes them feel like real boots. I was really dubious of some of the other tread patterns, or more accurately, the lack thereof. I've been walking on wet concrete and steel the last couple days and nary a slip.

Thanks for the recommendations guys :bigtu:

hi_im_sean: Interestingly enough, the 83402 was also on my list but they didn't have them in my size. I'll be looking at those again when its dedicated hiking boot time.

So much win. 3rd day on them, and they are awesome. THE most comfortable boot I have worn hands down. Soles are noticeably stiffer than the oxford I had, but not as stiff as the "true boot style" you have there. I like

shooterschmidty 09-04-2015 01:23 PM

If you want your uppers to remain supportive you shouldn't be putting mink oil on them as it will greatly soften the leather. There are many other products that provide waterproofing without unduly softening the leather. Obenauf's Heavy Duty Leather Protector is very highly regarded and has worked well for me. It's a mixture of beeswax, propolis, and tree resins.

I use sno-seal

This stuff has great waterproofing properties, other than that its all ive ever used so i cant compare. It does soften the leather a little, but dont they all?

My Allen Edmonds.
ShoeBank - Allen Edmonds Factory Outlet
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441388482
They replaced my caterpillar motorcycle boots after I utterly destroyed them from two years of hard use.

http://cdn.silodrome.com/wp-content/...t-957x1024.jpg

They were factory seconds for some reason. The color was probably off or something, because there is nothing physically wrong with them.
Outlet here:

I use a combination of mink oil (liquid form) mixed with neatsfoot oil.
Yes, both of these oils soften leather over time, especially neatsfoot oil.
Mink oil waterproofs, while neatsfoot does not.
I use it because I want my boots to darken a bit. When they are at the shade I want, I will switch to nikwax to waterproof without softening the leather anymore.

Awesome. Now if some benevolent moderator can move the boot content posts, that'd be greeeeat.

Im taking a welding degree at HGTC in SC. I needed a new pair of boots since the pair I had are horribly painful to wear for any amount of time. I went with these .

That's an interesting design. How is the arch support?
I wear wolverine inserts in most of my boots.

aidandj 09-07-2015 12:44 PM

Love the romeos I got. Slip on boots for the win.
But I'm left foot is significantly smaller than my right, never realized this when wearing sneakers.
Going to call and see if they will sell me just 1 left boot.
Any suggestions for inserts to take up space?

They are pretty flat on the inside. I had fairly flat feet so its not a huge problem for me. I may look into the wolverine inserts.

curly 09-11-2015 10:24 AM

I bought these.

Product Detail

Except black soles, black laces, and a dark orange accent color. I drive plenty of little cars for a living now, and couldn't fit in half of them with a bigger boot. Best part is these are safety toed, so I can use my shoe as a wheel chock while torqueing wheel studs.

I'm in the commercial construction industry (management) so I spend a ton of time in work boots. For the better part of a decade I swore by redwings. I was convinced by many of the carpenters on my crew to switch to Georgia boots and made the switch about a year ago.

I'm a huge fan of the Georgia boots and will not be going back to Red Wings. I wear the barracuda 6" wedge. I much prefer wedge soles due to trip hazard. My feet used to get sore with the wings after a 10 hour day of standing on red iron or concrete... not so with the georgia's.

I have Georgia romeos. And love em.
I do still need to call and see if they will sell me a single boot.

Itty 09-11-2015 04:22 PM

At my place of work, I can get $100 dollars towards a new pair of boots every 6 months. I should probably start a collection.

Shoe Factory-Seconds

Get on it.
I've been wearing my factory second dress boots in a decidedly non-dress fashion for the last 6 months, and they are holding up very well.
I also really like their boot polish.

shooterschmidty 01-15-2016 05:28 PM

Allen Edmonds also does a nice military discount if you call them or visit in store. In my experience they were willing to do the discount on top of the factory second price.

Boot update:

A little under four years into ownership, I have had to replace the laces. This is the first (and only) issue I have had with them. I have no complaint against a set of laces that lasted this long.

The boots themselves are still in perfectly serviceable condition.

I am just utterly astonished by the quality of these. I don't kick concrete forms into place for a living, but I do wear them every single day. I used to get about a year out of a set of Timberland "pro-series" Titans. The insoles would typically disintegrate at about the same time that the glue holding the rubber soles separated from the uppers.

No such bullshit here. These boots seem to be made of indestructium. The stitching is still intact and waterproof, and the insoles are still in one piece.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...40e0d7df91.png

They're big. They're heavy. I had to adapt my car a tad to accommodate them (by removing the rubber pad from the clutch pedal, so that the left foot can fit into the dead-pedal space to the left of it. Mind you, size 14. Smaller sizes would likely not have this issue), and I just utterly love them.

I just cannot rant enough about how much I love Red Wing's "Irish Setter" brand. I'm going to order another pair of them just as insurance in case they decide to discontinue the model before these wear out.

Joe Perez 10-31-2019 07:02 PM

Requiem for a Boot:

Four and a half years of daily wear ain't bad. But this past week, the leather of the uppers finally cracked, and today, my feet got wet.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7aa5d70fab.png

This is without question the most durable set of footwear I have ever owned. I said last year that I was going to order another pair as insurance. And I did.

Tomorrow, I shall again walk confidently through deep snow slush.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6e3194a199.png

I shall note that the soles are still fully intact, as is the stitching joining them to the uppers. Before I found this boot, I was buying one pair of Timberlands a year, and that was always where they failed; the sneaker-like glued seam at the front of the sole. No such BS here. These things are built to last.

Arca_ex 11-01-2019 02:16 AM

Oh man. I never saw this thread...

I'm going on about 2 years now on a set of Worx Red Wing Electrums (#5266). Electrical hazard rated and composite toe, and the best thing ever is that they zip up on the side. Never have to undo your laces and can get them on and off easily in seconds. I work indoors and just do a lot of walking on hard surfaces.

The nice thing about these was buying them in one of the Red Wing dedicated stores, the lady that worked there was super knowledgeable and talked me into buying these insoles that have this awkward looking bump in the middle of them. I didn't particularly like the insoles when I tried them on, but she said that if I still didn't like them in a week I could bring them back and she would exchange them for whatever ones I wanted and give me a free bottle of boot cleaner or whatever it was. Needless to say she was 100% right and I didn't bring them back, they're the best thing ever after you get used to them. So comfy. After a week my feet felt WAY better after long shifts than they ever had before. I had also asked her about the durability of the zippers, and she said that she's never had a single one of these come back for issues with the zipper.

Sean was the one that convinced me to ditch my Timberlands and get Red Wings. The Timberlands were slightly more expensive and were falling apart after a year. The lace eyelets were even popping out at 6 months. The Red Wings I have now are still chugging after 2 years with no notable issues.

I was a huge Vasque fan at my last job (7-10 miles of walking per day). The Vasque's would last 4-5 years with minimal care. Military buddy recently convinced me to try Danner, though I have a desk job now so I can't report on their sturdiness
