Just swapped phone plans...
 

I've had an LG Volt from Boost Mobile for about 18mo now since I got back from my last cruise... love the phone, 3000mah batt lasts all day and it does everything I need. I love the Boost coverage (Sprint network) although the Boost website is an utter abortion and possibly the worst GUI I've seen in a modern website. It's a horrendous shitshow and I send a complaint letter every time I'm forced to log into my account for some reason.

Anyways... just logged on to swap my CC info and learned that there's a new plan available. Same price as my old plan ($45) with double the data and music streaming no longer counts towards my data. Plus I enroll in auto-pay and get $5 off every month ($40), and it's a "grow-your-data" plan which means as long as I make on-time payments, I get more data every 3 months.

Yup, $40mo.

No-brainer. My wife is still paying $140mo on Verizon because "she likes Verizon" and I'm about to put my fucking foot down that she get rid of her 5yr old pay-out-the-ass plan.

Anyways... if you haven't checked your cel-phone plan in awhile, there might be something else that's better, and your phone service isn't going to send you an email telling you that you can get more for less when they're currently raping you. Free Sat. morning advice.

I had the Volt on Virgin mobile and I liked it a lot too. We switched to Motorla Moto Gs on VM's new data done right plans a few months ago. We pay $70/month out the door for 2 lines sharing 6gb plus unlimited talk/text. We've been with VM since 2010 and the only downside has been the lack of coverage "out in the boonies" like when we go to MATG in the smokies (no sprint towers in the area). I found out that the data done right plans lets you roam on Verizon towers unlike the other Sprint MVNOs. It's nice to be able to text and make calls in areas where we couldn't before. I think they give you 100 minutes roaming talk and just a tiny bit of data but you can pay for more if you need it. I think texts on VW towers is unlimited.

I signed up for Google Fi a 2 weeks ago with a 32GB Nexus 5x for $250. Unlimited talk/text for $20, data is $10/gb, billed per megabyte. Fi uses Sprint and T-Mobile for cell coverage, and will automatically connect to open WiFi, with a VPN back to Google to protect your data, to save bandwidth costs. On track to use about 800Mb this month.

Had some initial issues where the phone would only connect to T-Mobile but that appears to be resolved. Almost seems like it has to learn which network to connect to. Customer service has not been great, but after spending an hour canceling Verizon, I can't say it's actually any worse.

So far I am pleased with the decision to switch. Verizon was $129/month for 2 phones. Fi will be in the $50-$65 range, depending on data usage.

The Nexus 5x is discounted $150 until April 7 if you sign up for Fi. It also has all the required radios for At&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon so you can take it anywhere. So if you want to use it on your current/some other carrier, you can buy the phone, activate on Fi, don't use it, and immediately cancel. You'll end up with a $130 discount on the phone. It's pre-paid service, no contract.

Ting. Pay for what you use, and $3 per phone. Wife uses voice minutes (women like to talk, who knew?) and texting. I use data. Together we pay about $50-55 a month. Same Sprint network as you have now.

I have been using Verizon since 03/04. I pay the extra to get coverage that other provides do not have. Besides the price, I have yet to have any negative experiences with Verizon.

I went from a high cost Sprint plan to Fi. The Fi service is dramatically better than Sprint, and my average monthly bill is sub $30 range. Fi even sent me a Christmas present this year. I was with Sprint over a decade and all I got from them is a hard time.

If you are a heavy mobile data user, then a plan like Fi won't make sense because data is pay as you go @$10/gig (rounded to the nearest MB), but if you use your wifi networks at home and work and public hot spots, you can't beat the value. Any big box store or restaurant these days has wifi, and we also have access to Comcast hot spots due to having their service at our home. It takes changing habits some, but considering I paid $24 for cell service last month, it works for me.

My wife is still clinging to her Sprint phone "because Sprint".

$55/mo on Cricket (ATT) with 10GB data on my Moto X Pure edition here. Work wifi absolutely sucks so I prefer to use my phone data, so I usually use 7ish GB/mo. Too bad, otherwise Fi would be great (that, and I'm not about to give up the X Pure for a Nexus 5X... love this Moto).

Verizon has good plans, you just have to pick the right ones. My wife has the Prepaid $45 plan -- Unlimited talk and text, 2 GB of data that's upped to 3 GB if you set up the Autopay.

Hmmmmm... Sounds like I need to change it up from my t-mobile plan. Currently ~$90/mo paying off the phone and having data.

I rarely use minutes, rarely use txt since apps is what I use mostly to communicate (FB, Snap etc... AKA, little to no communication but tons of data being used)

To swich you may need to pay your phone off first. My wife has T-mobile and it's around 60/month for unlimited talk / text w/2gb data, but most streaming services don't count against it.

Good to hear you've been using Fi for a while and are still happy with the service. I was a little concerned after my phone initially would only connect to T-Mobile which means no service in the slightly rural areas I frequent. Took more phone calls, emails, and IMs to get any progress than it should have. Much better now, just needed to re-activate through the Fi app.

I was concerned about my own data usage and racking up a decent bill, but so far that has not even remotely been an issue. I enabled the option to automatically connect to open WiFi and that massively cuts down on cell usage. I have spent $2.09 on speed tests this month though. Funny how I stopped running random speed tests once I noticed how much they were actually costing.

I was very happy with Verizon's service for the past 5 years. Never had any major issues and their customer service was always helpful for the minor things I called about. Then I spent an hour trying to cancel service, most of it spent waiting on hold while being transferred around and then disconnected. They *really* don't want you to cancel. In retrospect, I should have just paid $20 to port the numbers to Google Voice and let that auto cancel my service.

I expect, and really hope, Sprint's rural coverage is good enough for when I actually want cell service while actively trying to avoid people. T-Mobile's in-town (at least in St Louis) beats everyone else and has for years.

I've been trying to justify a switch back to T-Mobile for a few years. But their pricing is back in line with AT&T/Verizon only without their coverage is shit so it never made sense.

For those of you happy with the price of your Verizon/Sprint/AT&T/T-Mobile plans but want a new (Android) phone, I highly suggest looking into the Nexus 5x. For another week it is discounted to $200 (16gb) and $250 (32gb) with Google Fi activation. Tack on $20 for the 1st months voice service and you just bought a nice phone for a reasonable price. Google will also finance it, interest free, for 2 years. The 5x has the radio requirements to support LTE on all 4 carriers.

Just went from ATT to Sprint.

Went from $130 to $70 month. And they paid all my cancellation fees.

I use a lot of data.

I am still on my parent's family plan. My line ends up being $18 per month with Verizon. It works out nice for me!

Can you add phones to the plan? Or is it just a single phone plan?

I'm at $140 a month with Sprint. 3 phones. 2gb data. Unlimited talk and text. I use a $10 phone though, so i'm not really sucking down data, nor would i need it.

No family plan support, you need a Fi account for each line. Your $10 phone will not work with Fi, only the Nexus 6, 6P, and 5X work.

My minor beef is the 5x isn't as sexy or slick as my 3 y.o. HTC One (little GUI things, etc).

Just spent an hour on the phone with sprint over the poor service in my house + this "airwave" device that is supposed to boost signal not working.

Unhappy. Really considering early termination and eating the cost.

Good thing with Google Fi is no termination fees.

I'm happy with Fi on my 6P. Don't use a bunch of data, so my bill is generally less than $24/mo.

I've been with Boost for nearly 3yrs... the only bitch i have is if you get off the beaten path, signal turns to shit. Other than that, I love them. Plus, I hate contracts.

I just shitcanned Sprint. We'll see how well Google Fi works out.
