What's the kitty story? There is an obvious running "thing" referencing cats. Who started it? What's it about?

After all, a cat face made its way onto the mt.net t-shirts.

Personally, I hate cats. I think it's because most of the memebers are city dwellers and can't have a dog they have a cat as a "cool pet" stand-in FTL.
