My first laptop was a Compaq portable. :D This sucker is smokin fast with its IBM 4.77 MHz processor and 128k of memory. It has dual 5 1/4" floppies, a 40k Hardcard (hardrive), and a Bitrate modem. And it only weighs in at a measly 28 pounds. Plus it will will run as long as your generator has gas in it. :D When I get Megasquirt I will use this machine to tune the Miata. As I know no one will even attempt to steal it, let alone be able to pick it up. :D

Rising from the dead. I absolutely loved the T400 I bought five (!!) years ago, but it's starting to show its age. Internal components are OK, I've upgraded what needed to be upgraded and fixed it a few times (new screen hinges, doing the cooling fan tomorrow), but the case itself is starting to come apart. Anyone have recent (within 12mos) experience with a Thinkpad that should make me look elsewhere, or should I just replace this with a new version of the same thing? Same budget, same requirements.

We use Lenovos exclusively where I work. X201, X220, X230, and most recently the X240. All are good, the X230 was the pinnacle in the line IMO but not sure you can get those anymore. The T series is of course going to be larger, heavier, have a CD drive. The components still seem very quality to me, and the Lenovo warranties are very good.

I just bought my 5th Toshiba Satellite L355-S7905 / L355-S7915. Bought the 1st one new and the next 4 used off Ebay. Fast enough for email, surfing, etc. I pay anywhere between $40 and $100 for them. Volume control is a thumb wheel on the front of the case. 17" screen. I use a freeware program to change my RT-CTRL to DEL. Two are running XP, two are running Win 8.1, one is running Mint (just installed it - can't give you much of a review on it).

Finally pulled the trigger on a new T440. Intel i5, 120gb SSD, 12gb RAM, 1600x900 screen, and Windows 7-64. New machine is two full pounds lighter than the old (!) and it's not even the thin/lightweight model. Cyber Monday deal, same price as the last one, ~$875+tax. See you all again in ~6 years.
