Large tach, small speedo in -what- car?

I have a very firm memory from my childhood (late 80's, early 90's) about a sports car, which I remember to be a Lambo (but I can't find it on the models from that time), that had a large tach in the centre, and then a small speedo to the right of it.

It was probably no bigger then the standard 52mm gauges, whereas the tach was a lot bigger. The reason the memory stuck on me, was that it went to 330 km/h or so, and was so tiny that the numbers barely fit.

And now I can't find it again..

Anyone have an idea of what this could be?
I might have looked at some custom made stuff, who knows..

Porsche 911's are set up that way.

Pretty much every rotary is set up this way.

Was about to say this. My current project FB RX7 has the big center tach. Love that layout, so much more practical.

Maybe all RX7's have them(and 8's?, haven't paid attention)....

Mazda made rotary cars before that, none had a centered tach.

You kids have short memories... :slap:

1976 Cosmo, which probably (generally) fits his criteria as well.

How can I have a memory of something that existed before I was born...? ;)

And technically the all RX7, RX8 argument is incorrect, since the 84 and 85 FB RX7 did not have the awesome large center tach layout.

I don't mean the ones from the Porsche or the RX-7. They're bigger, yes, but not in the scale I remember.
This speedo goes to 300+ km/h, and is A LOT smaller then the ones on the RX and the Porsche.

Did any of you read the OP? ;)

x808drifter 05-30-2011 04:07 AM

Kinda like this?

Yeah, that starts to look like it. Looks too new though..?
I tried to look through the Ferraris and the Lambos I could think of from the 80's-ish, but couldn't find any that resembled.

Hell, this could all be just a dream as far as I know.

Ferrari F50?

Loki79 05-30-2011 05:00 PM

Don't think the F-50 was built back then ;)
The car I'm looking for is from the early 90's, or older. And probably older, maybe as old as the late 70's.

soviet 05-30-2011 09:24 PM

F50 is from 1995. You're probably feeling old now :)

That sir, is a Fiat 124... NOT a Mazda Cosmo.

It's just me, mixing up the models. Was thinking of the Enzo, but it is ofc the F60. Sorry about that :)
Checked the F50, and it's not that, as we can see from the picture.

Starting to wonder if it was some other nasty supercar, like a Vector or a DeTomaso or something. Maybe a Ford GT40?

x808drifter 05-31-2011 07:30 AM

Your looking for a large Tach with a spedo about the same size as a 52mm gauge right?

Loki79 06-01-2011 12:27 AM

Yeah, something like that.
I would like to stress that this is 15 year old memories, so for all I know, it was a wet dream I had that I happen to remember :P

And thank you for the effort you put in to figure out this issue. The biggest point of it, is that it's the coolest gauge cluster I've seen in my entire life. In addition to being a massive nostalgic trip for me..

x808drifter 06-01-2011 06:31 AM

I remember it also, like the spedo was an afterthought. (shifting/RPM most important)

Loki79 06-01-2011 07:05 AM

Yeah, it was like "oh, wtf, we forgot the speedo!".
And then they used the mold for the temp-gauge, and fitted it with a 300+ km/h speedo background.

Fucking annoying that I can't find the car, it can't be THAT rare.
