Default lets discuss REFRIGIRATORS of all things

So yeah, as of last night our trusty Kenmore that we had for over 8 years took a dump on us. Its warrantee'd and everything but at this point its pretty old and beat up (it was involved in 2 moves and movers weren't nice to it) so we wanna get a new one.

Brands that come to mind:
Maytag
Kenmore
Wirlpool
LG
General Electric
Kitchen Aid

Brands I've just familiarized myself with while researching:
Frigidaire
Amana
Bosch (didn't know they made fridges lol).

What we want is a "side by side" style with water/ice dispenser.
Budget is up to about 1200.

I see a **** ton of selections between:
BestBuy
HomeDepot
RcWilley

Sears has a ton too but looks like their pricing is about 50-100 more than previously listed stores for same product.

So does anyone know
1) which brand should I be aiming for as the best for the money
2) where there are the best deals on fridges.

Also kinda wanting something Energy Star certified so its efficient and doesn't eat a ton of energy.

TIA

2 Maytags in service for longer than I can remember. No problems, but both were noisy. You may want to take that into account, as its something that is not obvious when you are looking at them in the store, where they are not plugged in.

I will never buy GE again. I have issues with my GE appliances, including my fridge. My Bosch dishwasher is win. I'm liking the LG and Kenmore Elite offerings. Kitchen Aid is eh.

I will definitely look at Bosch stuff first.

3 shitty GE appliances. they look nice at least.

If you do a lot of cooking you should look into the ones with the fridge on top. I am dying to get one of those in my kitchen. Sorry that doesn't help much...if you know anybody in the military they get 10% off at Lowes and Home Depot. Nothing at Sears though.

I got a Kenmore with the house I bought and have had no problems other than fan noise from inside the freezer. The thing is probably 10 yrs old.

That does look pretty.

We have everything in white in our kitchen though, so no stainless.
Problem with Bosch is it doesn't look like its common. There's like 1 store within 20 miles of me that carries it. I'll def take a look at it if I come accross any at teh stores we visit today.

Regarding maytag: I've heard its a good company, but if its going to be noisy that's a deal breaker for me: I like it quiet in the house at night. A noisy fridge will **** me off.

LG- don't know much about em, but my microwave is LG and so far I've had it for 1 trouble free year. Definitely will check that out.

GE appliance isnt even part of GE anymore. My ex interened for them 2 yrs ago when they were going thru the transition. EVERYTHING is built (and now designed) in china, they just have some legal crap that says they can still use the GE name. GE consumer & industrial is no longer operating in CT at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if most appliances from all major brands are made in china by the same factory.

We bought all new kitchen appliances when we moved into our house two years ago. Shopped around for a bit and wound up going with Kenmore Elite series fridge, dishwasher, range w/ double ovens, overhead microwave. Bought it all at Sears because they gave us the best deal on the whole package, and we opened up a Sears account which gave us 10% off that purchase and no interest for a year. That saved us almost $400, and allowed us to wait 11 months to write the check.

The fridge itself was right around $1200. It's stainless, so you could probably get the same model for $200 less if you just want a regular white one. Side-by-side, ice & water dispensers, built-in water filtration and the filtered water is used for the icemaker. No complaints. It hasn't broken yet, runs pretty quiet. Main fridge & freezer temp controls are digital but the meat & cheese drawer in the fridge has an independent temperature control that's adjusted by a slider thingy, and the placement of the slider is such that if you're really stuffing things onto the shelf next to it, you could drag the slider to max cold and end up with a bunch of frozen cold cuts. That was just a one-time annoyance though, now that I realize that slider is there.

If you go with a Kenmore don't buy the replacement water filters from Sears because they'll want to rape you for $40 or more. If you do some web searching to cross-reference the Kenmore part number, you will certainly find it's one of just a few common types used by many brands of fridge and you can buy them online for $10. I end up changing out the filter about twice a year, so over time that will add up to quite a lot.

I bought an LG fridge a bit over a year ago. It is win, the rest of the garbage in my house is fridgidaire, and even there higher line stuff was clearly not built as well as the LG stuff... I'm pretty happy with it, it can't be worse than any of the domestic brands that last 8-10 years. If you're a cheap ***, look for a scratch and dent appliance store, I know there are at least 2 of them in Arkansas... My neighbors got one and saved hundreds for a few dents that they have to point out, I didn't know the place existed when I got mine :(

Not that it matters, but...

GE Appliance is still fully owned and operated by GE. GE announced its plans to to sell their appliance division in '08 and went through the motions, but did an about face in '09.

GE is a global company. GE appliances and components are made all over the globe. Their refrigerators are currently made in Mexico and Korea. LG actually operates the Korea factories. All of the compressors I've seen are made by Panasonic.

I concur current Frigidaire appliances are absolute junk.

I'll look at best buy 1st but if not I'll definitely consider the kenmore.

And thanx about the filters tip: I had a feeling that you can buy that stuff online way cheaper.

So frigidaire is crap?
Off the list it goes then. I was skeptical of it since the 1st time I seen it anyway.

The RcWilley that I mentioned in OP has a section for "scratched/dented". My bro told me to check that 1st cause you can get top of the line stuff for 2-300 off regular price which is win.

I posted more details in the other thread...but I absolutely love this fridge:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...&blockType=L14

Ours is black like the rest of the kitchen...looks sharp, easy to keep clean.

I highly recommend a single door over a french...and once you go bottom freezer you'll never look back.

Main thing is visibility. If you see it, you will eat it...and this makes it easier to eat healthier with wide trays full of freshness. The old fridge had the two upright doors and stuff could stay hidden, and I tended to go for the easy snacks which I knew where they were.

Holds a lot of food too. Holiday trays were easy to store, even with our regular groceries in there.

We almost bought a similar Samsung but read a LOT about their track record. Seems you're lucky to get them to last 2yrs.

Most brands are made in China or Korea for the most part and are of pretty similar quality. The last two refrigerators I bought were top freezer 21 cu. ft. units. Not sure the brand but they were probably both GEmoregidares. They were white and I got them at the Sears Outlet (scratch and dent place) for $350-$380.

We have a stainless Kenmore Elite side by side. Its 4 years old and no problems so far. Is there a Sears Scratch and Dent Outlet near you? The retail price on ours was almost $2000, the on sale price at the regular Sears was $1500, and the price we paid on a 30% off weekend at the S&D was $800 out the door. There was a door ding size dent in the side but its against the wall in our kitchen and an almost unnoticeable dent in the right door.

Have you considered a SubZero? I'm not sure what your price range is, but we love ours.

It was off my list when I saw the thickness of the walls in the fridge and the way they're constructed compared to the 'import' fridges. Just open the doors and feel stuff, the lg's and samsungs just seem much better constructed.

Buy Siemens.

Just kidding.

If you use the ice/water dispenser a lot, be mindful of how quickly the ice dispenser and crusher does it's job. Our 2.5 year old GE Profile is awesome, but the ice dispenser and crusher is slow as a stock Miata.
