lets load test this bitch
and shatter the most online record. What's a good time everyone can be on? Maybe a week out or so, last time just a few days notice failed miserably

Are you trying to test your bandwidth or the server's disk speed with a lot of users? If the server has a decent RAID5 setup, I'd guess the available bandwidth would be the limiting factor, assuming we can even hit that since it's just text/script that is being served.

it doesn't need a raid for us :ugh:
ping www.miataturbo.net -t -l 65500 I'm guessing your ISP will stop the ping so we won't get a response, but it should slow things down. Hell, have everyone run 50 or so processes, that should be a good test :). |

So is there any backup for the forum? I sure hope so, I'd hate to see all this information lost due to a crappy hard drive. I run a 500GB RAID 5 in my home computer. That's not expensive to set up, but then again, I probably should become a paying member before saying things like that. If you want a good bandwidth test, just tell everyone to open up a command window (Windows, but linux should be very similar) and run this:
ping www.miataturbo.net -t -l 65500 I'm guessing your ISP will stop the ping so we won't get a response, but it should slow things down. Hell, have everyone run 50 or so processes, that should be a good test :). |

It makes me feel safer running a RAID 5 than just a single drive. The likelihood of two of my three drives failing at the same time (or before a new one can be put it and the RAID is rebuilt in the event that just one fails) is hopefully...well...very unlikely. I think the ultimate solution would be a RAID 6, but I spent that money on the miata instead of an extra drive and an adaptec controller card. The built in RAID controller on my motherboard does not allow for a parity drive as far as I know.

The -t keeps the ping going until you stop it (default is 4). The -l 65500 means it sends out ~64KB of data in the ping, which is way bigger than 32 bytes it sends out by default.

who cares about striping on a server going over the internets? just mirror raid 1 style and be done with it.
