Let's talk Radar detectors

So the local police decided to once again buy radars to fuck with motorists on the roads and highways. I thus need to find out what is the best radar detector out there and also ask those of you using one where have you placed yours. Any pic you can post will be much appreciated!

Thanks

01TurboMiata 06-05-2008 12:55 PM

Im using a "cobra" not sure what model, It does 360 detection, talks, and can detect 12 different types of radars. I have it mount in the left upper corner of my windshield, kinda above my head...... Works great.

pschmidt 06-05-2008 12:56 PM

Valentine 1 with concealed display, end of story.

The detector fits perfectly on the windshield on the passenger side of the rearview mirror. The remote display can be run where ever you like.

I've had them all, Bell, Whistler etc. and the Valentine has been the clear winner.

Savington 06-05-2008 01:01 PM

V1, end of thread.

^^ What he said. This is going to get redundant fast.

V1, IF you're on the highway. It isn't *that* much help if you're just on surface streets. Cops will still pull you over for whatever they perceive to be a valid reason. They also don't like it when you tell them your $300 radar detector didn't make a sound.

So, Valentine 1 is the consensus? Is it 360* and can someone show me a pic of it on the car?

bradlee, local cops are all corrupt. They're just looking to get your money. We've gone through this locally before. It starts with motorists getting tickets only to end up a few months later with cops getting some money and letting you go but I'd rather have the detector. Plus, since this is a "Banana Republic" I'm pretty sure they didn't purchase the latest radars available :giggle:

ApexOnYou 06-05-2008 01:35 PM

I'm partial to the Escort Passport, but all my friends swear by V1s. I just like that I can see multiple radar sources at once along with their individual strengths, like bar graphs (V1 only shows you the number of "bogeys"). Its nice to know which direction the threat is coming from though, the V1 shows that, the Escort doesn't, although the new Passport might, haven't ever seen it in person.

supra441979 06-05-2008 01:38 PM

V1 with Phazer 2 and you can't be stopped! :giggle:

RotorNutFD3S 06-05-2008 01:40 PM

I have a Passport as well, and it has saved my ass quite a few times. However, I hear pretty good results with the V1 and Passports, so it's probably the budget that matters the most.

hustler 06-05-2008 01:43 PM

I've had a V1
passport x50
bel 955
the super cheap $90 bel

First of all, I've had the v1, 955, and super cheap on in the car simutaneously. None are more accurate or sensitive than the other. Yes, the $500 V1 performed the same over 1-week with the $90 bel and I know I experienced pop, laser, and old-school speed trappings.

With that said, I gave my v1 to my sister because although I like the direction indicators, they don't tell you much other than to slow down. Now, they're awesome if you're drunk and want to know where the law is. However, the lack of automute is the bane of my existence, and I hate the knob. You have to press the button every time it goes off...every fucking time. My bel automutes, so I never have to touch it.

The higher you can mount it, the better. Do yourself a favor and hardwire it though.

why? It doesn't change the fact that you still have to slow down. Like I said, its cool when your driving drunk or running drugs, but that's about it.

deliverator 06-05-2008 01:47 PM

V1.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies.

BTW Chris; what's a "Phazer 2"?

Hey hustler; wtf is hardwiring?

supra441979 06-05-2008 02:25 PM

Phazer 2 is a radar jammer.

Wire the radar to the car, instead of plugging it in to the cigarette lighter.

Oh; Ok! Thanks Chris. BTW, I didn't know you could jam a radar! I would've thought that's illegal but what do I know.

About wiring the radar to the car and not the lighter: any specific location?

I know I ask a bunch of stupid questions so bear with me. :giggle:

ZX-Tex 06-05-2008 02:34 PM

Bel 965. It saves me from a ticket almost weekly.

Tex, I envy you! that baby is beautiful! :bigtu: I've got 3 sons and I've told them not to bring me any grandchildren home if they're boys!

SchoonerPaul 06-05-2008 02:45 PM

I used a Bel for awhile. It worked out well on the interstate for me and was next to worthless in the city. I found that it worked marginally well if I didn't know the road. If I knew the road, and where to look, it would clue me in as to when the cops were running radar in their hiding spots.

I'm definitely an old fart! :giggle:

Wtf are you talking about?

crashnscar 06-05-2008 04:30 PM

V1 ftw. Been using it for 3+ years and it has saved me from countless tickets.

I even had a cop pull me over once and tell me that she radared me at 83mph and I looked her straight in the face and said "No you didn't, because I wasn't going 83mph". I was going a bit over 83 and the radar hadn't gone off, so I decided to take my chances and call her out. She returned and ended up just giving me a tint ticket.

Zabac 06-05-2008 04:33 PM

V1 for me, saved my ass more times than I can recall. Once it died, I got fucked hard because I was so used to it and kept speeding, I am a slow turtle now.

I am going to say Beltronics STI if you are worried about spectre. If not go with the V1.

kotomile 06-05-2008 06:34 PM

V1, hardwired. I got tired of having to reach up to the windshield to turn mine off going through the gate to work, so there's a switch to the left of the center console. The detector itself is up on the windshield to the left of the mirror, the cord is run through the dash and inside the rubber on the windshield surround.

From Mel Brooks; the same guy who made Blazing Saddles. All my sons loved Spaceballs but I'm partial to Blazing...

That guy knows about comedy.

v1 pwns in the laser test!

sucks it can be detected though.

messiahx 06-05-2008 10:30 PM

I've had a cheapo Cobra and now an Escort 8500. I've still gotten nailed. The Cobra seemed to go off all of the time so I ignored it...the one time I did get pulled over when I had it, the thing barely went off. The Escort is worlds better, but unfortunately the staties and even a lot of the small town cops here are running laser, hence my $230 ticket last week. :(

speedf50 06-06-2008 01:13 AM

I have the Bell RX65 and it has saved my ass a few times, but on the freeway mainly.

Does anyone else have the problem of the lazer detector doing off constantly when in direct sunlight? I'd love this thing if it weren't for that.

Also, why does everyone mount them so high up, is there a huge advantage?

J.T. 06-06-2008 03:14 AM

Many have made their radar detectors radar detector detector detectors detecting the detector detector before the detector detector can detect the detector
it boggles the mind 0.0:crx:

That is an extremely good forum to read if you want some more in depth information on diffrent type of radar detectors.

Dlaitini 06-13-2008 01:16 PM

If you do alot of highway driving i would suggest a simple CB radio with an antenna splitter for total stealth

Truckers will call out where all the "bears" hide, down to the milemarker and direction they are facing

Just got back from a road trip from NC to MN and i was getting hiding places 10 miles in advance

CB radio i have is handheld so all the buttons are in easy reach, plan on wiring a third speaker into my headrest for it only so i can hear stuff better with top down

splitter i bought from that jeff anderson guy over at m.net

It also has the worst performance against falses. Does great against POP though.

bryantaylor 06-13-2008 04:44 PM

my bel express 795 works great. you cant beat it for the price. i have it harwired on the bike, so it doesnt get put on any of my cars, but it has saved my ass many times. also has saved other people when i am on a group ride.
