Living in California is....

Paying $340 water bill.....

(and brother in law who is crashing with us for undetermined amount of time can't understand that 15 minute showers are NOT fine)

Give him the water bill.

Tell him to stop masturbating.

Monk 10-11-2016 12:50 PM

I lived in California for a time.
Now my mortgage and electricity bill combined are lower than your water bill.
And yes, dude needs to stop making water babies.

Erat 10-11-2016 12:51 PM

Is that for 3 months? Does that include sewage?

My bill was $317 for the last quarter, it's about $50 above average. Though, the female in my house does take long showers, I usually fill my hot tub once in that time, and I have a sprinkler system...

hornetball 10-11-2016 12:57 PM

Per month. Gasoline is cheaper than water when you don't have any.

fooger03 10-11-2016 02:04 PM

I think my quarterly water + sewer bill is creeping up on $150. My city water reservoir is let down every year before winter to prevent flooding, and I don't believe they've pulled from the secondary reservoir in ~ 3 decades.

I'd venture to say that clean drinking water is more readily available in Olmos, Peru today than in almost all of California.

JasonC SBB 10-11-2016 02:07 PM

Don't you know we still have a SEVERE DROUGHT?! Just look at the electronic freeway signs!

2slow 10-11-2016 02:14 PM

It's for 2 months....but still f-ed up. I do spend less on gas than on water per month. I got a kid so trying to keep at least some grass for him to play on is costing a lot. And yes - all are valid suggestions about the brother in law :vash:

shuiend 10-11-2016 02:21 PM

My water bill averages $8-$11 a month. My sewer bill and trash bill is $44 a month. I take however long showers I want. No fucks are given in my house about water usage. I also keep my ac on at 68 degrees because I also have cheap electric.

z31maniac 10-11-2016 02:57 PM

My mom's boyfriend owns a SMALL avocado farm, like 25 acres on the side of the hill outside I think Escondido.

His water bill for the farm has been averaging $9,000-10,000/month through this drought.

Downmented 10-11-2016 03:23 PM

I no has water bill, well water FTW!

Besusjesus 10-11-2016 04:22 PM

California still has water?

y8s 10-11-2016 04:34 PM

california has access to a literally endless supply of water.* or **

* the water cycle is endless, but the rate at which you get it is very low

** but it's a little salty

MartinezA92 10-11-2016 06:41 PM

Dude what? I take 15 minute showers and my water bill isn't nearly that high.

asked a friend in san jose what he pays and he said its under 100. and he lives with women.

California is not all the same....Northern Cali has a lot more rain compared to us down by the border. I'll be drinking less water, more beer...

rleete 10-11-2016 07:28 PM

My 3 month water bill last quarter was slightly over $48. And I bitched because it's usually below $45.

Erat 10-11-2016 07:45 PM

Mine tells me how much water i used, apparently in 3 months i sucked down only 400 gallons of water. Maybe i didn't refill the tub, i can't remember.

hox 10-12-2016 11:44 AM

Don't get me started or to borrow from Joe Perez, "Another Rant by Hox"

We currently pay $4.216/ hundred cubic feet of water. Seventh highest rate in the US. $84/month for trash which includes a fee because I live in a hilly area. Most of Portland has hilly areas, too hilly in fact to move any snow that may fall which leads to a thrilling afternoon of watching people crash their AWD suvs on the sheet of ice that forms after a few failed attempts.

Then our city leaders decided trash pick up should be every other week for the same rate. Recycling is every week. We have to freeze anything that will reek after a few days until the night before trash pickup. I pity anyone with a can full of diapers festering for two weeks who has these cans in their garage. Did I mention that trash cans must be moved out of site from the street or you get a nasty warning letter as you are not doing your part to make your neighborhood beautiful. This is CC &R that the city allowed our HOA to put in place.

Our water rates are so high, not because of a water shortage, (it rains all the time here) but because the city has deferred any upgrades to the water and sewer system. Due to its antiquated nature, the costs to repair this system to code is very high. The city is currently being sued by the Feds because they have not covered the water storage systems that any animal can fall into. We recently had a boil alert because someone was recorded urinating into the storage system. Of course the city will just raise the rates to cover the cost of the lawsuit

Same for the roads which have made me have to bend my miata exhaust after hitting a mountain of asphalt pushed up by the city buses. To raise $ they are now contemplating a GPS tracker for all vehicles to charge us on a per mile basis, along with a special gas tax. Those damn hybrids just don't use enough gas. Did I mention that my property tax ( I have a 8000 sq foot lot) is going to be $10,000 this year?

Portland has a few weird taxes too. For the past few years anyone 18 or older who makes >$1000 and lives in Portland had to pay a $37/year Arts Tax which was marketed as a mechanism for putting arts and music into public schools. We later found out that for at least one of these years, the administrative costs somehow used up a good deal of the money. Then we found out that this tax was being used to support commercial ventures such as the ballet and opera companies which was never disclosed. Don't mind supporting the arts, but I hate the lack of transparency.

2slow 10-12-2016 11:54 AM

Ouch, that's just all kind of messed up. And I always wanted to move to Oregon (with Portland being at the top of the list) because I thought my water bill, taxes, etc would be much lower. Our trash used to be around $75 but then for some reason was reduced to about $46 and I'm happy to take that.

Anyone from Colorado (my second top place) wants to chime in and burst that bubble?

Don't let my rant dissuade you from considering Portland. You can avoid some of this stupidity by living in a nearby city. It is very pretty here with many outdoor activities and the summers are terrific, low temps and sunny skies. Lots of weird and interesting people, good food, wine, and microbrews. Intel, Nike, Adidas, Columbia, Tektronix all have a major presence here or in the nearby cities of Beaverton and Hillsboro. Decent soccer (sometimes), great stadium for the MLS club (Timbers), Basketball (Trailblazers) and of course the legalized weed. They are estimating that 111 people/day are now moving here. Readily obtainable vitamin D , did I mention the 42 days in a row of no sunshine last winter? If you are from this area, the grey days are not an issue. Hard to gauge each person's response. We had several people where I work originally from Sacramento and San Diego, leave after 1 winter. Just think of living here has its costs as in any city.

Neither do I. In fact, we offered to send our clean water up to flint and well, you saw how that turned out.

DNMakinson 10-12-2016 01:17 PM

^^ Well, I hope you saw the humor, in spite of the facts.

sixshooter 10-12-2016 01:29 PM

Southern California isn't having a drought. It's a desert. L.A. got about 9 inches last year, about 9 the year before, 6, 6, 9, 20, 16, and 9. It looks like it is tracking about 9 much of the time. Expecting 20 and getting 9 every year doesn't mean you are in a drought. It means you have false expectations. Expecting c-cup boobs every time you remove an a-cup bra from a chick doesn't mean she's supposed to have c-cup boobs. It means you are barking up the wrong tree. Removing the bra more times doesn't really improve the likelihood of it being a pair of c's.

I did, It could have easily been me though. Or any number of us in old cities.

And to think, people in Detroit and surrounding cities protest the fact that they have a water bill. These people say that fresh, clean, pressurized, potable water should be free and is a human right.
After months, still no resolution for Detroit water protesters' trial | Michigan Radio

Can verify, I live in SJ with my fiancee and a female roommate and my water bill is ~$80/mo. We used 75gal/day avg. on the last cycle.

All fucking true. The trash is the biggest pain in the ass. I am putting in water tanks to collect rain water for my garden. The arts nonsense. Then the fucking road tax that got voted in because are roads are trash. They spent the money for roads on some other BS and came back for more with a gas tax. STILL BETTER THAN CALIFORNIA. I was so happy to get away from that nonsense. Sure the weather is nice but the cost of living is ridiculous and there are a billion people there fighting for the same gallon of water to keep their dumb ass yards green.

I remember the guy pissing in the water. THEY DRAINED THE WHOLE GOD DAMN RESERVOIR over one guy pissing in it. We are talking a stupid amount of water. That guy could have taken a piss in it every day and it still would only have like .0000001% piss. Still... I love Portland.
