Looking for a Queen Bed - Any Suggestions?

Damn, beds are expensive. Looking for the best bang for the buck mattress, box spring, frame suggestions. Already went to Costco, but there's no way of knowing how it will feel with no display model.

Latex mattress is looking more and more favorable, but it's $$$.

Any suggestions?

viperormiata 02-22-2011 05:50 AM

Sleep Number.

Do yourself the favor. It is worth it.

love my latex mattress. and yes, $$$.

but consider how much time you use it and how long they last.

simple math:
lifetime of std mattress: 10 yrs
lifetime of latex mattress: often 30+ (you have to replace the cover every 10 maybe)

crappy sertasimmonsstearns spring mattress is $1200 w/10yr warranty
organic latex with customizeable firmness/softness layers and $2500 with 20yr warranty

and you dont get toxic chemicals leeching into you all night long
and dust mites can't live in the latex
and if you decide it's not firm or soft enough, you can replace layers within the first month or so for the cost of shipping only.

http://www.savvyrest.com/ is what we got. it's friggin awesome.

and a platform bed from BedWorks of Maine
http://www.thebedworksofmaine.com/

(I shopped around all the online retailers to find the best price with shipping and saved about 10% of the local dealers FYI)

Stay up late. And watch the tv. lol

The things I learn on this forum...now wondering how long before I "need" an organic latex mattress.

Sentic 02-22-2011 11:32 AM

Go to IKEA.
Latex mattresses can smell (of latex), check before buying.

curly 02-22-2011 11:34 AM

Go to a mattress store. Costco? No. Keep in mind that if you're not getting 50% off your boxspring/mattress set, you're paying too much. I love my Simmons postripedic (sp?). They put stiff springs around the edge so if you get close the edge you don't roll out. And they're all tied together, so if all your weight is on one, the ones around it aren't digging in.

That being said, it was very hard to choose. All of them are comfy.

y8s 02-22-2011 12:35 PM

one big reason I bought the mattress I did was because I didn't want to donate $1000 to the shitty customer trap that is the spring mattress industry.

I made my own bed out of dumbells and particle board and carpet and carpet pad. My back is straight as an arrow and I never have back pain. All mattresses sag and fuck up the curvature of your spine.

Soft mattress make you weak, like little girl.

Any mattress you lay in is a queen bed.... homo.

How long do the foam matresses last?

y8s 02-22-2011 03:02 PM

Braineack 02-22-2011 03:27 PM

Cheap ebay natural latex mattresses:

QUEEN 12" ORGANIC BAMBOO LATEX FOAM MATTRESS

y8s 02-22-2011 05:35 PM

that talalay junks is the bomb. super soft.

Braineack 02-22-2011 05:56 PM

i have a memory foam pillow.

kenzo42 02-22-2011 06:11 PM

Ok, I'm sold on Talalay latex.

Thanks for the ebay link too Mgeoff. I'm pretty sure I'll buy from that guy. Not sure how he can ship it to me for free? I'm assuming it's super compacted into a small size.

Y8s, what thickness did you get? I like beds slightly firmer. Is yours foam and latex or 100% latex?

I've read memory foam gets really hot. Plus, you can't get your groove on, on it. lol.

dpexp 02-22-2011 06:40 PM

I love mine, what sexual positions are you referring to?

240_to_miata 02-22-2011 06:42 PM

I have a knock off temporpedic Memory foam mattress from a Bobs Furniture (east coast thing... bobopedic)

It SUCKS. I got the plush one and the first mattress they delivered was ROCK HARD. I complained and they sent me another one... same model...softer...but still too hard.

I dont expect it to last. If I had money and wasnt just graduating college/starting a new job/ moving in to an apt I would have spent more $$.

I wont get memory foam again tho!

Oh and I have no issues what so ever "getting it on" in this bed, although my gf did have a VERY soft memory foam before we moved in together and it tended to "soften the blow" a little bit. lol.

mine's about 10 inches total thickness. I got (3 layers, from the bottom up) medium, medium, soft for my side but it's dunlop so it's firmer than the talalay. firmness of the top and middle determine cuddliness and firmness. the bottom layer is for support. I'm about 180 lbs and it's fine.

but...

dont buy a mattress without laying on it. unless you're crazy.

falcon 02-22-2011 06:51 PM

I just got a new one last week Serta Sertapedic or something like that. Felt great in the store and so far I really like it. All of $700 on sale. No box spring I have an IKEA low profile bed thing that has wood slats.

rleete 02-22-2011 06:55 PM

I can't stand the foam ones. They are also hot - hold in body heat more - which for me is a non-starter.

Seriously, just go to a matress store and lay on a few. If you can't decide, then don't. Leave and come back later, or try another place. I can't imagine spending more than 600-700 for a queen, box spring included. If you pay more than that, you're hooked on the hype.

Braineack 02-23-2011 08:48 AM

You bought it at fucking Bob's - that place is worse than ikea.

We have to design cushions sometimes at work for products in within the medical realm and I can assure you that the better memory foams are $$$.

Cut the latex circle jerk damnit

I will make you nice bed out of cinder block and good sheet 1/4 inch steel plate.

In college I slept on a bare piece of plywood and resultantly, developed such high levels of testosterone that hair sprouted on the soles of my feet.
