Miata owners getting called FAG?

So enlighten me here fellas... I've yet to drive a miata, although I've owned mine since July '08.

Is it REALLY that bad? I was reading in the "ever have a miata try to race you" thread about how some of you have had people yell "FAG!" at you while driving your miata's. Just got me wondering if I should wear a mask while driving the car or possibly vinyl the sides "I'M NOT GAY" in a contrasting color.

Qckslvr 05-28-2009 12:33 PM

I have yet to have this problem. And I have driven through S.F. multiple times, lived in the Bay Area, and in Monterey County. Been owning Miatas for 13 years. :D

nicacus 05-28-2009 12:35 PM

It doesnt happen to me all that often, I've had my car for four years and probably only had it happen 3 or 4 times.

Usually by the needle dicks in their huge trucks with balls hanging from the hitch.

Machismo 05-28-2009 12:37 PM

If you don't have anything to worry about......Why worry?
It's usually always the ones who are borderline themselves and really have no clue about the "performance" aspect of these little cars anyway.

vehicular 05-28-2009 12:38 PM

My friends make fun of me about it, but I've never had a stranger say anything negative. In fact, I get complements all the time...

cueball1 05-28-2009 12:42 PM

I never get anyone revving at me or wanting to race. Guess the car isn't stealthy enough?

As far as the ghey references, it's mostly ribbing from friends or family. Never strangers. My wife says I have a Me-Oughta. Me-oughta get a real car. I just tell my friends when they rib me about driving a chick car or gay car, it was this or cross dressing and I chose the car. If I ever get tired of it I just tell them to meet me at the track.

Heck I enjoy driving a VERY capable car that people don't respect. Sometimes I look at Z4's and Boxsters and think maybe I should have something more respectable for a guy my age but I really don't want to take a step backwards in performance! Also like the idea that if something bad happens I can buy another $3000 car and reuse my go-fast parts on it. That's about the same price as a dealership brake job and tune on those other cars!

I use to get that all the time in my '90 Miata when I bought it:
Attachment 205543

The thing was so gay that I wouldn't even try to argue, I'd just give a limp wrist waive and bat my eyelashes. I had it happen probably 4-5 times in a 6 month period. Since it's boosted, stripped, LOUD, has a rollbar, and race harness nobody has said anything. I just get a lot of odd looks.

I've been dailying my stock 10AE for almost a year now and haven't gotten yelled at yet. I think it just depends on the miata. Some of them appear significantly more gay than others. And like someone else said, when comments do come, it's always from some douche in a huge truck.

mrtonyg 05-28-2009 12:51 PM

It takes a real man to prance around in a Miata!!!

:werd:

calling somebody else a fag is just one trying to find his way out of the closet :giggle:

9671111 05-28-2009 12:55 PM

I've had kids in school buses throw pens and shit at me while calling me a fag. I get made fun of by my friends occasionally. Car was pretty gay though. No hardtop, gay wheels, no torboz. That's changed though with all the goodies. I guess the lesson is you shouldn't drive it stock unless you're an old man or a woman.

To the contrary, I've always considered something like this:

Once you lower your car, it changes the way people percieve it.
Anyway I never get that. I'm 5'9" and about 190 lbs though.

Stein 05-28-2009 01:20 PM

Never had it happen to me in the year and a half that I owned one.

Saml01 05-28-2009 01:21 PM

Never happened, coming up on 2.5 years of ownership.

gospeed81 05-28-2009 01:25 PM

Never happened...but usually if the top is down, my tranny tunnel holster mount is also visible from jacked up truck height...

Never took any...but will when I get a chance if you're considering the same. I just screwed a cheapy nylon holster I had grabbed before finding a REALLY good concealed carry one to the plastic surround. It's not pretty...but it works. Once I started to look for race seats I knew I'd need somewhere to set it when in car, and thought I might as well make it a useful mount.

My grandpa turned his flip-down style ashtray into a pretty nice "clip in" holster. I wish I had picks of that: clean OEM look when he's not in the car...perfect access and security when driving.

y8s 05-28-2009 01:51 PM

one guy one time during the first year I owned mine called it a girl car. after that, never again. that's 8 years.

Sounds like a nice setup, I might have to do the same. On longer rides it starts to get annoying having it between my hip and seat...

Faeflora 05-28-2009 02:18 PM

an angry bicyclist once said "that's a chick car you know" and i said "yah my girl loves it" which is true..

miatauser884 05-28-2009 02:29 PM

Only been from people at work. However, the one guy who started the fag thing at work is also the guy that gets upset when I don't let him drive it. Go figure. I actually see significantly more guys driving miatas in town than girls. The ones they are driving don't even look bad ass like mine. At least after the DE in June I can say I've had it on a track. What's FAG about that?

Joe Perez 05-28-2009 02:36 PM

I've only had this happen once, about three years ago while driving by the beach on PCH in Carlsbad. I had a male passenger in the car, a customer of ours from China, when an early 90s Mustang roared up beside us and the two 20-something occupants (both Guidos) shouted some epithets out the window while performing a ricer flyby.

My passenger (who spoke only limited English and was on his first trip to the US) was somewhat confused by this, and I didn't even attempt to explain it. We then proceeded to meet up with everyone else at a nice restaurant where, as usual, he ordered a plate of french fries. (Apparently french fries are not a popular food item in Guangzhou, and he'd become addicted to them.)

Oh I always get it is a girl car from my cousin that built a honda to destroy me, and when I left car lenths on him...... He went out and bought a GT mustang and was scared to death to race the 6 psi car. LOL

I thought the stock mustangs where faster than that. But he is slowly modding it. I won't be suprised when he throws a S/C on it.

But yea, it actually is a girl car.... I don't mind that. And lets put this in perspective.

They are cheap to come by and are fast for a small amount of money. If you have $5000, and are a good tight person like me. You can buy a nice NA miata and have 220hp in no time. And mabe some lowering springs and shocks etc. , A pretty fun track car.

Where if you where buying new........I wouldn't spend $27,000 on a MIATA! I'm thinking used Vette, Porche, WRX, Audi, New mustang ETc. etc.. etc....The list goes on.

But for a budget convertable beast. Best bang,,,, The dollars go far.

zoomin 05-28-2009 03:10 PM

I typically have a pretty lady in the passenger seat when I am out with the top down, but even riding solo I have never had the gay comments coming up on 7 years and 3 Miatas other than from friends who know me. Last night I was out with such a lady and some punks in a Gti pulled up next to me with their windows down and music bumping, they stared at her and the car with envy. But most guys would be envious if they saw her, a slim Bulgarian fitness instructor working on her Masters in nutrition. Now if only my freaking 6UL's would get here it would look even better!!

It's spelled Porsche

gospeed81 05-28-2009 03:15 PM

Seriously, I guess I'm lucky. I hear all the time about people catching flak, but I never get anything besides compliments.

If it happened I probably wouldn't give a crap...verbal junk can just roll off the shoulder. I worry more about the subconscious perception of small cars being "in the way" most SUV drivers have. Coming off a sport bike, I still see a lot of people treat the Miata just like they did the bike, with serious desrespect regarding your ownership of the lane.

And unlike being called a FAG, having someone change lanes into you can get you injured or killed.

Damnit...I was just comtemplating how nice a $27K wrap-around porche would be.

Neither would I. That said, you can buy a new 08 for $18K pretty easily right now. That puts it in "disposable commuter car" price range when looking at new.

There was even a WSJ article about it a week or two ago. What boggles my mind is that there are tons of CL ads with people trying to peddle used 06's for the same money.

This is one of the things I think of when I begin to consider making my car quieter. People don't see me very well as is..

rleete 05-28-2009 03:46 PM

There is one asshole at work that is always calling it a gay car. He thinks he's being funny, each and every time.

Said asshole drives a fake wood paneled minivan.

You should start laughing really fucking hard every time he says it...see how long it takes him to figure out you're laughing at him and not with him.

zoomin 05-28-2009 03:53 PM

Owning a Miata and a lifted Jeep gives you both perspectives, and both are equally as fun.

Newbsauce 05-28-2009 04:00 PM

I get the comments from friends that own mustangs about how my car is "gay" or a "girls car". Normally the literate and educated (see what I did there?) car community knows better, and I get quite a few complements when I'm out.

jayc72 05-28-2009 04:00 PM

Well if you look at it logically mini-van vs Miata, I'd say the Miata is more likely to have gay people owning it. Think about it. What do straight people typically have that gays don't? A pile of kids. What is better for transporting kids, Miata or Mini-Van?

I prefer the "gay" stigma over the "50something white guy with meshback driving gloves and a flat cap" stigma. Seriously this isn't a fucking MG you twats!

Besides, we all know the real pole smokers are Mini drivers.

Actually the poll that the radio dj's were talking about (two or three years ago) said that gay men drove Jeep Wranglers more commonly than any other vehicle.

Prospero 05-28-2009 05:38 PM

Lol, I am the only non Russian in my company... these guys had some choice words for me when they saw my black 99; but when I got the yellow 02 it was even worse. Though sweet justice is mine! As much as they think it is a gay as hell ride, when we all go out for a trip... guess what......... the girls fight over who rides with me! So as much as they like to think it's a gay car, I am the only one driving without another dude sitting next to me!

Best part about people ragging on the miata and saying it is a chick car, gay ride, and whatnot is the fact that most are driving something like a silver accord or maroon camary. Sorta funny how they try to blend in and hide whereas us miata drivers will go the other route. Normally I am not shy about pointing this part out. In fact I generally opt to challenge the bastards to a chick magnet test. You bring your generic ride and I'll bring my gay car and see who gets attention first. Have not lost yet!!!!!

disturbedfan121 05-28-2009 09:55 PM

at most meets i go to there is alwasy one jackass thats like "that cars cute lol" i shout back "so was you mom after i came on her face"

then usually a different person comes over and is like OMG your car is fuckin sick etc...

so it kinda balances out

evank 05-28-2009 11:43 PM

Only person who called me that is my older brother, who's one of those insecure Republican military types (nobody in my family of liberal Jews can figure out how that happened.)

This next part might be "too much information" for some people :) but where my previous stock NA only ever made women say, "It's so cute!", my current MSM with aggressive-sounding Absurdflow exhaust really has improved my results with the ladies.

What sort of hat do you chaps wear while driving topless? I find a good pith helmet is the best to quell the gayness.

On topic:
My brother called my VTA BOV on my old Greddy setup my car's "gay lisp".

nicacus 05-29-2009 01:20 AM

Something like this: http://www.warriorswatch.org/store/beret.jpg

Maybe that's my problem.

scottv 05-29-2009 08:04 AM

not yet, but I get a lot of looks. My Miata is all black with black wheels and a rollbar so I guess it's about the most heterosexual it can look...I think people are looking trying to figure out if it's fast-it's like they're thinking "well that car should be slow, but I think it might be fast".

gospeed81 05-29-2009 08:39 AM

No more did I post in this thread yesterday... and on the way out one of the more intellectually challenged individuals here at work decided to comment.

He was parked close to me and said: "Man I came out here earlier to get something and I almost stepped on your car." At least there wasn't a fag comment in there. The guy just put rims on his Impala with his whole paycheck, so I'm not too worried about it.

I just asked if he wanted to race and he said NO FRIGGIN' WAY...atleast he knows what's up. We ended up talking and he actually offered to GIVE me the tires that came on his used rims since he wanted something lower profile. Too bad they're 20"s.
