Joe, i'd like to propose you inject some sort of useful chart into the first post of this thread and link back to it as it's updated.

I'm in dire need of spirits of a bargain nature and would love a few recs with descs.

So that I might better understand, Joe, you were not pleased with Evan Williams because it lacked a little bite? I've always avoided bite as a negative attribute. I rather enjoy Evan Williams as an inexpensive Bourbon.

I picked up some Old Overholt rye last night. It's not bad. Spicy but not as smooth as the bulleit or catoctin ryes. Maybe not quite as smooth as the Dickel.

Anyone know if the cheaper blends (bourbon and grain neutral spirits) are aged before or after the blending?

Pretty much, yeah.

I like things which have a robust flavor, drink as well as food. It's why I didn't especially care for the Even Williams- it seemed slightly bland to me, not much complexity to it.


[EDIT] I recall several years ago, being a redneck sort of bar in Ohio, and placing what, at the time, was a fairly customary drink order- the brownest beer they had, and a shot of Bacardi 151. I think the folks I was with were expecting me to either mix the shot with the beer or down it and chase it with the beer, because when I started slowly sipping it, their reaction was something along the lines of "HOLY ****, DUDE!" So, yeah. I guess I just like to be able to taste what I'm drinking. [/EDIT]




I splurged on Friday and spent $10.99 on a bottle of Rebel Yell; $2 more than the Sam Grant, though still $3 less than the Trader Joe's house brand which I have yet to try.



This one was interesting. Somewhat smoother than either the Grant or the JB, but it has a nice, rich flavor (caramel-scented leather, perhaps?) and finishes slightly spicy on the tongue. I can see keeping a bottle of this one around.

When I said "Glen-something-or-other," it was meant as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that there are at least a dozen expensive single-malts that all have the word "Glen" in their name, and I consider them to be more-or-less interchangeable (inasmuch as that they are all expensive, all single-malt, and all at least 12 years old.)

its not about a person named glen, its a joined agreement that if you named your liquor Glen Something, a drunk wont know the difference and equal profit to all distilleries.

Huh?

In Scotland, a glen is a small valley with a waterway running through it. So an analogous name for an American whiskey would be something like "**** Creek" or "Ranger Creek." The name refers to the name of the creek near which the distillery is located.

Bargain nature huh? I got a couple of suggestions, some of my favorites... for vodka and gin I have to say I found this fairly new company new amsterdam that makes both pretty decent especially the gin I'd say pound for pound it is very close to bombay sapphire, the vodka not bad either. There's also a pretty new tequila out called camarena it's very good unfortunately it has gone up in price since it's debut but still very resonable. For rum it's always sailor jerry for me 1.75 liter at specs for 18 bucks I believe was what I last paid for it 93 proof. Them be my favorite cheep ones

Geez, liquor is so pricey here. I think typically a "handle" of Sailor Jerry here is ~$27-28.

I have vague recollections of that game. Was it circa the same time Leisure Suit Larry was out?

This was a LucasArts title that came out several years after the original Leisure Suit Larry, but there were a bunch of Larry sequels, so I'm sure that one of them probably coincided with Sam & Max.

Same genre and general era, at any rate. (Along with Monkey Island, Full Throttle, etc, and somewhat after Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken.)
