Any updates to this thread, Joe? Have you found the holy grail of cheap whiskey? I'm considering picking up a bottle tomorrow at my local ABC, and could use a good recommendation.

Well, my cross-country move rather complicated matters. Not only are cheap whiskey brands highly regional in nature, but the pricing structure of liquor is rather different here in the NY / NJ area which makes it hard to compare to west-coast liquor. I don't know what it is about the Atlantic coast, but you people who talk funny and accuse us Californians of being communists have the most draconian liquor laws...

The most recent purchase was a 1.75l plastic bottle of Heaven Hill black label, $22 at BuyRite Wines.




Heaven Hill is a huge distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky which produces a number of "knock-off" brands, such as Admiral Nelson's (Captain Morgan's) Spiced Rum, and so on. The Heaven Hill bourbon label is surprisingly un-horrible. It's a 10 year old blend which should theoretically taste like Evan Williams (same distillery) but which seems to have a somewhat bolder taste. I had earlier criticized Evan Williams as being somewhat bland (what a bourbon snob might call "smooth"), and Heaven Hill delivers a somewhat sharper initial bite which I find rather satisfying.

Ive noticed that the stores themselves are very different as well. In the Buffalo area of NY liquor stores are actual stores, but herein SC they are just a small room. They typically have a much smaller selection of the things I want.

This is a "blended" whiskey, correct? I saw some Heaven Hill today at the store, but not the black label. I've had Kentucky Gentleman before, which I believe is 51% bourbon and 49% grain spirits (the technical minimum for it to be called bourbon) I don't remember liking it too much, but my dad seems to like it just fine, as it seems to be a staple at his house.

I picked up some of the Jim Beam white label mentioned earlier in this thread. While I haven't had the chance to sit and sip it yet, it works pretty well with coke.

This was my go-to whiskey for a while. Its very reasonably priced. I'd give it a shot if you haven't already.

Canadian Mist is great for the price. My wife's grandpa used to exclusively drink Mist and Sprite.

And Kentucky Gentleman has been my number one go to drink if I'm not drinking beer. Actually I've been neglecting my beer explorations for this Bourbon for about 6 months.

beer is basically just watered down whiskey joe. settle down. ice is a legitimate way to soften and aromatize even a cheap hooch.

I put ice in my beer all the time, particularly during daytime drinking excursions.

Edit: Not really all the time, but when heat is a factor or when doing some kind of physical activity.
