Remote start for my Camry any ideas? Anyone use them before?

Yeah, we use them in Alaska alot. It really, really sucks having to start your car before you get in the shower just so it will be semi warm, unfrosted, and drivable by the time you're ready to leave. What sucks more is running to the car to start it without proper clothing on. They work well, unless you have a manual transmision and no way to turn the clutch switch off. Though you can usually bypass it like the miata.

Yeah, I've had 3, all Viper. 2 had the 2-way lcd display keypad. Nothing to it.
You'll need a dmm and a wiring diagram. Have fun.

I got a new remote start kit I'll sell for 50 bucks. I bought two, one for my car and an extra. It has alarm and keyless stuff too though. 1/2 mile range.

my borowed DD has it, i love it, totaly worth it
not sure how much your gonna have to fork out, but its well worth at least 2-300 if i was to get it for the miata

Shouldn't be too bad. Any good aftermarket alarm will send a trigger pulse to arm/disarm the factory alarm. Plus you'll also have most of the wiring right at the factory alarm (door triggers, parking lights, horn). You'll just need to run the wiring to the ignition, and the alarm should come with a relay kit.

The issue you'll maybe run into is if you have coded keys. I had to purchase another key and marry it to my vehicle. The remote start uses it to by pass the security. Easy but will up the $$$ and be a bit of a pain in the ***.

I loved the remote start I had in my Vette. I'd put one on all my cars but I don't want to carry around the key fob in order to use it (gotta keep the weight down in my pocket).

On Ford's (at least it use to work)

get a copy made at the hardware store
make sure copy works in ignition
tape the real key w/ the encoder under the dash (w/i 8" of ign)
see if car starts...
if it does then cut head off key, tape under dash and save all the $$$ the guys in canada spend...

I bought onje of those cheap bbulldogs from northern tools... works great and only $44.00

if you can get the wires off something like a camry forum it's an easy easy install. i had them on almost every car I owned for awhile.

Basic remote start from Directed is about 60 bucks. They install in about an hour or two, depending on if you can find wiring diagrams.. being the most popular car in the US, someone has to have tackled this install by now and posted to a blog somewhere on the internet.

my girl has it on her car and i've been toying with putting in on my truck. I know hers is cheap but i don't know what kind it is, her dad got it for her for christmas a few years back, i'll try to find out

Even the cheap remotes have install websites w/ all the diagrams. I bought one from Target and the manufacturer had a link w/ all the wiring for the Sienna it was going on. It's really easy, the tough part is finding the wires for the power locks...

Those target ones were the things that got my mind thinking. FOr 50-100 bucks its completely worth it.

Yeah, IIRC the one I put in the Sienna was $69.00 and the wiring diagram was right online so it only took me an hour or two. (I didn't install all the options) I just wanted it to start. MyCar's are pretty common, but a Fiat maybe a challenge
