I used to be into games and always had a computer that could play all the new games, but when college hit i had no money or time. Now i've got an xbox360 and that does me just fine when i need to shoot some germans

What's it like in the stone age?

Have you seen comparos of the I7 to Q6600? Its like 10 - 15%, its pitiful, the price difference between the two makes it not worth it at all.

Yep, thats why I went the route I did. Same with my last build. I go for bang for buck, not all out performance for 10% performance for 50% more cost. The only thing my setup falls short on is benchmarks, which isnt real world. A system costing $500-$700 more than mine may only get 3-5fps more in games, and cut processing times on video software by 20-30 seconds on a 8-10 minute process. Not worth the cost at all in my opinion. I still would have liked the AMD 955 though. Like you said, it would have been $50 more for the processor, another $50 for a mobo, and another $100 for memory. Not worth the small gains. Intel still has AMD beat in performance, but AMD wins in value and upgradability, since their new processors still use the old AM2/AM2+ socket and DDR2 memory. Off to waste away my mind with some more Crysis!

how are overclocked i7 cpus compare to overclocked q6600s?

conclusion: your setup needs more water and more overclocking to reach your video cards potential.

I don't plan to water cool this one. A good heatsink and fan will allow me to overclock to ~3.8 with a tiny voltage bump, but I like stock voltage and lower temps, so I will stick to 3.6 for now as my goal. I can run 3.6 now, but under 100% load it gets fast very quick. Of course you almost never see 100% or close to 100% in normal operation, but I still like knowing it can hold up to 100% loads. Mine peaks at about 60c after about 30 seconds of Prime95 and shuts down. Current idle temps at 3.4 are around 41c and under average loads (30%-50%) they hang around 48c-50c. A good cooler will drop them probably 5c at idle and 10c under load. I'm more suprised I haven't seen GPU temp issues like some have complained about with these more powerful ATI's. Mine is the Toxic Edition so it got the "Vapor Cooler" which is supposed to drop temps across the board by 10c or so. Alot of people have talked about 70c+ at loads, but I have yet to see mine go above 60c while playing Crysis. Have the fans turned to manuel and run them at about 50%, which is pretty quiet. They even have a slight overclock. So far, so good.

What I'm using now, which is considered pretty low-end:

It's rated at about 7,000 MFLOPS (seven billion floating point operations per second), which is thirty-one times the throughput of this:

I rock a PC that is 650mhz, and does everything I need. I think its because I've built machines since the early 90's, a spec'd out machine was stupid expensive then, and I've learned I dont need the latest and greatest to do whatever. never mind that I havent played a computer game newer than about... 2003

Newbsauce 05-08-2009 04:53 PM

I used to build PCs.. then I stopped playing PC games. I found that I always needed to upgrade to play the latest and greatest game. All that ended when I quit WOW, my last online game. Now, when I feel the need to game, I rock the PS3. I do miss the stupid crazy PVP that Ultima Online, WOW, or DAOC provided though :( UO being my personal favorite of course.
