Move over Floridians

Here I come. Im going to be moving to Destin within a month. I need a change of scenery and lifestyle. Not completely sure what I will be doing for work, but I have a few options lined up. Im still going to be living with family, but it will be a 4 story house on the beach, and I will have my own floor, so Im not too worried. I will either end up building houses, or working for a family business. Main reason Im moving down there is my uncle bought an unfinished subdivision, and we are building 8-10 houses about a block from the beach. Not sure wether they will be rent out houses for multiple families, or if they will be owned homes, but my stepfather and myself will be contractors. He is an architect and handy with building, and most of my professional life has been in construction of all types, so it shouldnt be too hard to handle. Wish me luck, and if anyone lives in the area, I would appreciate some help learning the land when I get there. Ive visited the area a few times, but still know nothing about what to do around there.

Now its a sure thing I need to get my a/c working, its hot enough here, no way I can handle Florida heat and humidity without a/c. Also no point in doing my bathroom build right now, since I will be gone before then. I will still probably come back and stay here for a week or two every few months. Only a 5 or 6 hour drive.

Im a very indecisive guy. Earlier I thought I was going to have a hotdog and relax, and instead went to a Japanese steak house and had steak and shrimp and then went shoe shopping. I already kind of had plans to do this a few months ago, but things then didnt quite pan out, and I ended up getting cold feet and decided to stay. Given how my life is going right now, I could use a change. Plus I have a feeling I may be home from work early tomarrow, from being fired. If not tomarrow, probably soon. So I have no real ties holding me here, might as well jump in with both feet and try something new. If it doesnt work out, I can always come back and be a bum and live with my dad till I get another job and back on my feet. But Im hoping things work out and I enjoy it there, and might even put down roots there. Just have to see.

The only 2 major things I dont like is I HATE heat. Im much more a cold person. Secondly my dad recently had to change careers and his income isnt all that great right now. I feel guilty leaving him, since I have been helping with the bills for the last year. I may keep sending him money from down there just to help out.

Also, a side question. How many of you have a Florida issue CCW permit? Ive been reading up on the steps you have to take to get one, seems a bit more complicated than in Alabama. At least you get it for 7 years, and not 1 year without renewal.

The heat is not much worse here than in Alabama. I have no A/C, and you learn to deal with it.

No AC here either. It's no biggie after a while. Some days are flat out comfortable.

Permit's a breeze. IIRC $117 to the state capital with your application. The easiest way it to take the $40 class at the gun show to learn some of the nuances of the law and the do's and don'ts of the paperwork. They will give you the forms as well. Not hard, but takes ~60 days to get the permit back.

BTW - Destin is in the part of Florida we call L.A.
Lower Alabama.

And there are a couple of guys in the panhandle if I remember. -Naarleven and JimAtFSU are in Tallahassee, Chris850 in Crestview/Ft.Walton, turbo94 (Mike) at Eglin AFB. IDK any others in the panhandle. Coastertrav is, of course in the Orlando area these days, even though his tag says otherwise. Anybody I left out?

Yeah, you aren't moving to Florida at all. You're moving to either South Georgia or South Alabama depending on who you ask. Real Florida starts south of Ft Pierce.

Heat isn't bad near the coast and it isn't much worse than Alabama, maybe more humid, less heat, nice sea breeze.

Joe/rccote, you're fucking nuts. There are days its so hot I cant be outside for more than 30 seconds before I need a shower. I've yet to spend a summer in Tallahassee (since moving from West Palm Beach) but I've heard its worse.

Yeah, but this time the yankees are in the south.

Pussy here. I consider one of the benefits of being an adult to be able to drive around in an air conditioned automobile. Although three of mine don't currently have it.

I think those crazy fuckers were trying to say A/C at home, at least I assumed. I knew one person too poor for A/C and needless to say he was the stinkiest kid I knew.

Very few people lived in central Florida and all parts south of there before the advent of affordable home A/C. The mass migration didn't really start until the late fifties/early sixties.

In the summer, after taking a shower and getting ready to go somewhere, just walking to your car and getting it started cooling down will cause you to need another shower.
Even if you are in shorts and a t-shirt. It's the humidititty.:)

Trent 03-17-2009 10:49 PM

You're all pussies. Come spend a summer in southern Louisiana. I've lived in both, and I can assure you all it's much much worse here. I don't even have an explanation for it. Seriously.

But it is.

Come to think of it, I'm not even going to limit the above comment entirely to the weather here.

naarleven 03-17-2009 11:42 PM

I've spent a good amount of time in NO, LA

It's not nearly as bad as South Florida

Here's why

I mean there are a multitude of things about "South Louisiana" that are god awful otherwise...
