MT, recommend me an audiobook.
I enjoy reading, but I rarely have time (or desire) to sit down and actually do it. What I do a lot of, however, is driving, to the tune of 2000+ highway miles a month, and my floormats can only handle so much masturbatory emission before I have to find something else to occupy my time. I have found the joy of Audible, which lets me download books, put them on my iPod, and listen to them while I pass cars at double the speed limit while porn stars film in the bed of my truck.
So recommend me a book, because I'm out of good ones. -I like carz -I like politiks The last two books I read were The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria, and The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. So basically anything that's an interesting commentary on the current financial or political world (y8s and cuadra, I'm looking at you) or a good story (everyone else). |

See if there's an audiobook for "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies".
Also, "Lies My Teacher Told Me" was a good read. Don't know if it's on audiobook either. I suck. |
D0000d, do you drive the Bang-Bus?
EDIT: The only way I retain info is by focusing on each word in the book.... lol So I think an audio book would be great, so long as I close my eyes or am in the dark. :) |
I see Cryptonomicon is available on audiobook. Might be kinda long for listening to, though. Also doesn't meet your preferences (maybe wartime politics, although it's still a stretch, being fiction).
|
i like anything Clive Cussler or Dan Brown or John Grisham or Bill O Reilly.

|
Repost! I asked this about a year ago. Read the Dirk Pitt series by Cussler and check out Pendergast by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
|
Theodore Rex (about teddy roosevelt)
the baroque series by neal stephenson is LONG LONG Blindness by Jose Saramago |
I love audiobooks, and there's NOTHING better at making the miles fly by.

C I'll second Freakonomics, Tipping Point, Blink, and the World is Flat (you can torrent most of the popular audiobooks). Some books on my to read list: Amazon.com: The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon: David Grann: Books Amazon.com: The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil: Philip Zimbardo: Books Recommended List: Amazon.com: Five Years to Freedom: The True Story of a Vietnam POW: James N. Rowe: Books Amazon.com: World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War [ABRIDGED] [AUDIOBOOK]: Brooks Max: Books The Audiobook is supposed to be bad ass, lots of celebrity voices (Alan Alda and Mark Hamil). Amazon.com: Fight Club: A Novel: Chuck Palahniuk: Books Chris |
What about Unsafe at any Speed, or a Burt Monroe biography. In terms of fiction I'll second the vote for Dan Brown books, any of them. Don't be prejudice because of the movies, they don't do them any justice, although I haven't seen the Angels and Demons movie yet.
|
Bryce Courtney
L ron hubbard Tolkein Joan Divinge David eddings kell to name a few |
For more fiction - Martin Cruz Smith's (in order) Gorky Park; Polar Star; and Red Square. Good murder mysteries mixed with some Soviet-era politics.

Remember, he was a Sci-Fi writer before he created scientology.
|
Exactly why I'd take that recommendation from anyone but a Scientologist.

Friedman Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner C All of these are awesome books. I drive about 75,000 miles a year and listen to tons of them. My fav is freakonomics though. I have the unabridged audiobook for it and loved it. |
Blink was kind of boring now that I think about it. It's basically a book explaining first impressions. Tipping Point and Outliers were much better.
One of the real stand out short stories of Freakonimics is chapter 3. Why Do Drug Dealers Still Live with Their Moms? C |
Don't read anything that L Ron Hubbard wrote, he was a bit of a hack. Read about him, that is a way more interesting story. He was absolutely fucking nuts.
Battlefield Earth was O.K. but far from the best Sci-Fi ever written. The Mission Earth epic 10 book series was laughable. William Gibson or Neal Stephenson have both written some of the most excellent fiction. Cryptonomicon by NS and the Sprawl Series by WG are awesome. I can't get into audio books. I tried to listen to Neuromancer by Gibson, but it was read by Bruce Sterling who is a fucking tool. |
