Default Mx-2

Anybody else seen this thing? It looks awesome. Unfortunately they're saying it's most likely going to be FWD.

Mazda MX-2 Revealed | Auto Express News | News | Auto Express

This is Mazda’s version of a downsized, credit-crunch friendly MX-5, the MX-2.

Our illustration shows what the MX-2 is likely to look like. You can see that the Furai concept will have a strong influence in the design, while a hint of Ferrari California is also present in the headlamps.

Because the MX-2 is smaller than the MX-5 it will come equipped with smaller engines. Small capacity petrol engines ranging from 0.7 to 1.6-litres will get the MX-2 moving, while a range-topping 1.6-litre turbo pushing out an expected 160bhp. Combine that with low weight, and the MX-2 will embarrass more expensive machines with ease.

The Mini Speedster and Nissan Urge may be at design and concept stage now, but they’ll be keeping the dinky Mazda on its toes.

An insider has hinted that the MX-2 will be upon us as soon as 2012, so we can expect to see a concept reflecting the ‘downsized roadster’ very soon.

I dig it more than the current NC. I like the front wheel arches. Think they need to lose the now common front bumper "grin".

So, people were complaining the NA/NB chassis were too small, so Mazda made the NC bigger. And now they're making a smaller version. Anyone else find that really damn typical of the auto industry?

I agree, I like it much much more then the NC. Didnt hear about the FWD. That kinda sucks. Still rear independant? Would suck if they put a beam axle in the back.

if that is rear wheel drive, it'd be a fun commuter.

That would be awesome if it were RWD. But if it were, it'd cannibalize MX-5 sales.

It'll cannibalize MX5 sales regardless, the hairdresser demographic cares not about drivetrain layout.

It's a made-up drawing for a made-up article that has no basis in fact whatsoever.
