my gay m.net post: seatbelt/steeringwheel death

I've been thinking about getting a sparco steering wheel. However, since my car has the gay ass stretch belts, should I keep the stock wheel for the airbag so if I did wreck it, the airbag may help my torso?

Braineack 07-15-2008 11:40 AM

cut the stretch section, then proceed to grow balls.

Ben 07-15-2008 11:42 AM

maybe a good wreck is what he needs to get his balls to drop down

reddroptop 07-15-2008 11:52 AM

What stretch belts?

This coming from a guy who passed out from hitting his head on the roll bar while hauling ass?
WTF has happened to you?

disturbedfan121 07-15-2008 12:06 PM

never heard of stretch belts. my steering wheel is fine, if you get hit hard enough in a miata and the airbag is the l east of your problems

Seat belts in cars originally equipped with airbags tend to allow the occupant to travel about 3" toward the deployed airbag in a crash. This is not desirable once the airbags have been removed.

miatanutz 07-15-2008 12:12 PM

Miata airbags tend to be the cause of injuries in my experience. I ditch them without hesitation.

paNX2K&SE-R 07-15-2008 12:53 PM

I read over there on M.net that even the non airbag Canadian cars had the stretch loops too. I wonder how much of a difference they really make? I bought a momo hub over the cheapies b/c the momo is collaspseable in the event of a really bad accident...

Zabac 07-15-2008 01:42 PM

Just don't wreck, problem solved!

Well, you don't have to worry about going that fast in a non-turbo Miata, now do you?

I have a friend with a Non-Turbo miata that runs 14.0s in the 1/4... :fawk:

When he kicks someones ass they always ask if its turbo, he assures them its "non turbo." ;)

I'm about to use some of these frequent flies miles to deltsmash your skulls. You've been warned. If I didn't have an 18-year old coming over, I'd write some long, drawn out description of house I'm going to horsefuck your soul.

johndoe 07-15-2008 11:29 PM

anywho... belts have a loop that is stitched together. When you crash, theoretically they tear and that tearing gives you a more gradual movement into the airbag. Just guessing, but if it works it probably protects your neck by preventing you head from whipping forward and then getting smacked backwards by the airbag. The tearing belt would allow your whole body to move forward instead of just you head.

The worry is if you still have the loop and crash you have an extra couple inches of movement in which to smash your face on the steering wheel. The stitching can be carefully cut and pulled out without damaging the belt.

ApexOnYou 07-16-2008 02:39 AM

Seems like even the non airbag cars had the stitch belts, some people cut the loop, some don't.

Eeeeh, Savington? I think that little sister may have gotten a hold of your password there. Or perhaps the polar bear was indeed a demon who possessessedded you body and made you type a lot of crap while your soul tormented?

Where are the stitches located on the belt? I have never seen them myself, but to have effect they have to be somewhere on the stretch of belt that runs from you hip to the roll at your shoulder, right? Otherwise, they would not do much difference.

it's within that thick piece of cloth with the warning label. And you will also notice that 1990-1993 miatas without passenger side airbags still have that loop on the passenger side.

Run 5-6pt harness. Problem solved

I suspect this is an ideal route. I'm waiting on 6pt harnesses myself before I install my new steering wheel (even though my old stock on is all "scabby").

Throw in my roll bar has impeded in my stock seat belts ability to function correctly.

I have a 6-point harness, but not for the street.
